FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to novel arrangement of oxygen sensor in exhaust system
of automobile.
PRIOR ART
Exhaust system of an automobile comprises of exhaust manifold, catalyst,
muffler and oxygen sensors. The oxygen sensor is provided to sense the
amount of oxygen in engine exhaust for controlling engine fuel. It also acts as a
detector to detect malfunctioning of the catalyst.
Said oxygen sensor is positioned before or after flexible joint of exhaust system,
which is decided according to the vehicle layout.
However, fitting of the oxygen sensor after the flexible joint leads to high
movement of the sensor in dynamic condition. This high movement may
damage the oxygen sensor by pulling the sensor harness from sensor element.
To obviate the aforesaid drawback, it is already known to have been provided a
vehicle with long wire for oxygen sensor to take care of the high movement.
However, it is associated with the disadvantages of high cost and bad layout
due to touching of the excess wire with other hot parts of engine.
Hence, the present invention has been proposed to obviate the above
mentioned drawbacks.
However, reference may be made to the following prior arts:-

GB 2468276A;- This invention is related to an automotive sensor mounting
assembly comprising (a) a sensor, eg a temperature sensor or a lambda oxygen
sensor, comprising a housing, a cable and a plug and (b) a holder for guiding
the cable. The holder, eg a self-supporting metal strip, comprises an elongate
member having a first end portion extending at an angle of less than 180 DEG
to the elongate member and having a though-hole adapted to accommodate the
sensor housing. The holder further comprises guiding means engaging the
cable and/or plug of the sensor, eg a through-hole for snap-fit engagement
with a lug protruding from the plug, so that the holder guides the path of the
cable. The first end portion of the holder is directly mounted on the component,
eg a catalytic converter. The elongate member may be bent or curved. The
through-hole may support a clip for holding the cable. The elongate member
may be formed from wire with a semi-closed loop for supporting the cable. The
guiding means may be formed entirely from a thermally insulating material.
JP 2009-174996;- This Patent includes a gas sensor mounted to an engine,
the lead wires extending to the outside from the gas sensor, and a connector
provided for end parts of the lead wires, supports and wires the lead wires by
pressing the lead wires in recession groove parts of a plurality of lead wire
supports provided for a vehicle at a plurality of locations, and is provided with
the deviation bodies for preventing the lead wires from deviating in the
recession groove parts in longitudinal directions, after wiring.
In both the above Patents, sensor mounting and coupler are static without
relative motion therebetween.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel arrangement of
oxygen sensor in exhaust system of automobile which overcomes
disadvantages associated with the prior art(s).
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel arrangement of
oxygen sensor in exhaust system of automobile which is efficient.
Further object of the present invention is to provide novel arrangement of
oxygen sensor in exhaust system of automobile which is cost effective.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide novel arrangement of
oxygen sensor in exhaust system of automobile which is simple in
construction.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide novel arrangement of
oxygen sensor in exhaust system of automobile which prevents damage of
oxygen sensor in dynamic conditions. |
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention discloses novel arrangement of oxygen sensor in exhaust system
of automobile comprising of mounting of wire connected to the oxygen sensor I
on a bracket by means of a clamp, which is positioned before the harness
coupler.
Provision of the clamp avoids damage of oxygen sensor during over pulling of
sensor in vehicle dynamic condition.

STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided novel arrangement of oxygen
sensor in exhaust system of automobile comprising of an oxygen sensor
connected to a pipe from exhaust at one end after flexible joint and an engine
harness coupler at the other end by means of a wire which is clamped to a
novel bracket.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from
the ensuing description when read in conjunction with the accompanying
drawings and wherein:
Figure 1 shows: conventional arrangement of oxygen sensor in exhaust system
of automobile.
Figure 2 shows: conventional bracket.
Figure 3 shows: novel arrangement of oxygen sensor in exhaust system of
automobile.
Figure 4 shows: novel bracket in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
As already discussed hereinabove, conventionally a vehicle with long wire is
known to have been provided to take care of high movement. For the same, I
reference may be made to fig. 1, wherein an oxygen sensor (1) is connected to a
-6-
pipe (2) from the exhaust manifold of vehicle. The sensor is provided after the
flexible joint (3). However, a long wire (4) is provided connecting said sensor at
one end and coupler mounting point (M) at other end. The coupler mounting
point (M) is located on the bracket (fig. 2).
Said coupler mounting point (M) is the Mounting Point, where the wire from the
sensor is connected to engine harness coupler. Through the coupler, the wire is
further extended till Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the vehicle.
However, the drawback is that, the wiring harness gets damaged particularly at
the coupler mounting point due to vibration during the movement of vehicle.
This leads to non functioning of said sensor making the vehicle unsafe.
Hence, the present invention is introduced to address the aforesaid short f
comings. I
The present invention is directed to novel arrangement of oxygen sensor in
exhaust system of automobile as shown in fig. 3. In this invention, an oxygen
sensor (1') is placed after the flexible joint (2') of the pipe (3') from the exhaust.
The oxygen sensor is connected to the engine harness coupler (C) mounted at
the coupler mounting point (M') provided on a bracket (fig. 4).
In accordance with the instant invention, the connecting wire between the
sensor and coupler is short as compared to the prior art. The wire is as long as
required for connecting the oxygen sensor and coupler without having extra
length unlike prior art.
However, the wire is subjected to vibration during movement of the vehicle.

Therefore, in order to save the wire from damage at the coupler mounting point
(M'), a clamp (C^) is provided to fix the wire on the bracket. So that, vibration
1 I
-7-
is restricted upto the clamping point thereby safe guarding the wire at the
mounting point. Due to this provision, said oxygen sensor can function
efficiently without facing malfunctioning, thereby making the vehicle safe for
use.
For accommodating said clamp on the bracket, the lower longitudinal part (L)
of said bracket is extended and provided with a hole (H) for the clamp. The
shape of hole (H) can be circular, oval, rectangular or any other shape. Further,
upper longitudinal part (U) of the bracket is broadened so as to increase
strength of the bracket for its efficient functioning after mounting of the
coupler and clamp thereon.
Advantageous Features i
- Efficient.
- Reliable.
- Enhanced safety of vehicle.
- Prevents damage of oxygen sensor in dynamic condition of the vehicle by
avoiding peeling of harness from coupler.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within I
the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the
following claims:-
