Abstract: This invention relates to novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding comprising of a knurling/groove at the rim inner periphery and at the disc flange outer periphery to provide grip therebetween and thereby diminishing torsional load acting at the welded area joining both rim and disc.
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel
at welding. The vehicle can be any vehicle such as car, truck.
BACKGROUND1 PRIOR ART OF THE INVENTION
A steel wheel is known to have been provided for vehicle, in which a formed
steel disc or wheel center (1) with a flange in the periphery is assembled in a
rolled steel rim (2) by means of welding (3) as shown in fig. 1.
Thus, disc of the wheel (1) is mounted in the well (W) (fig. 2) of the rim (2) by
welding (3) as shown in fig. 3. Fig.2 indicates detailed view of the cross-section
of the rim depicting the following:-
Flange-F
Hump-H
Bead seat-B
Well- W
However, the disadvantage is that, the assembly area of the rim and disc is
more prone to failure due to high stresses in welding. The failure in the welding
area is due to the stress generated by the torsional load produced (fig: 4) at
welding (T) during dynamics of the vehicle. Fig. 4 indicates the following:-

This affects life, stability, performance etc of the wheel, thereby endangering
safety of the vehicle and hence safety of the passenger.
Hence, the present invention has been proposed to address the aforesaid
drawbacks.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel wheel of vehicle
for reducing failure of the wheel at welding which overcomes disadvantages
associated with the prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel wheel of vehicle for
reducing failure of the wheel at welding to reduce torsional load acting on the
welding, thereby reducing the stress on welding.
Further object of the present invention is to provide novel wheel of vehicle for
reducing failure of the wheel at welding which is reliable.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide novel wheel of vehicle
for reducing failure of the wheel at welding to improve strength of the wheel
and its performance and life.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide novel wheel of vehicle
for reducing failure of the wheel at welding which is simple in construction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention, there is provided novel wheel of vehicle for
reducing failure of the wheel at welding comprising of a knurling/groove at the
rim inner periphery and at the disc flange outer periphery to provide grip
therebetween and thereby diminishing torsional load acting at the welded area
joining both rim and 'disc.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
This invention discloses novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel
at welding comprising of a knurling/groove at the rim inner periphery and at
the disc flange outer periphery.
Thus, modification is carried out at the fitment area of the rim and disc i.e. the
rim well inner periphery (2) (fig. 5) and the disc spoke outer periphery (3) (fig.
6).
Referring to fig. 5 in which rim well inner periphery (2) is provided with
knurlingl groove ( 1A) as shown.
Referring to fig. 6 wherein disc spoke outer periphery (3) is having
knurling/ groove ( 1 B) as shown.
The knurling/groove can be provided in the rim well where the disc is fitted.
Alternatively, the same can be provided in the secondary well of rim (S) (as
shown in fig. 7). Fig. 7 also indicates primary drop well (P).
It is more effective when the groove/knurling is provided on both area i.e. rim
well and the disc.
The presence of these grooves/knurling provide grip between these two and
thereby diminishing the torsional load acting at the welded area that joins both
rim and disc.
The implementation of these grooves/knurling on the wheel showed drastic
improvement in the endurance life/ overall life. The performance results
showed negligible difference with various shapes of groove/ knurling.
However, in order to prevent any crack from the groove,'the shape of the groove
is not provided with any sharp corner.
Further, the pitch of said groove is such that, it facilitates its manufacturing,
wherein its count is maximum.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within
the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the
following claims: -
We claim:
1. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding
comprising of a knurling/groove at the rim inner periphery and at the
disc flange outer periphery to provide grip therebetween and thereby
diminishing torsional load acting at the welded area joining both rim and
disc.
2. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in claim 1, wherein the knurling/groove is provided at the rim
well inner periphery where the disc is fitted.
3. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the knurling/groove can be provided in
the secondary well of rim.
4. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the knurling/groove is
provided at the disc spoke outer periphery.
5. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the groove is free from
any sharp corner to prevent any crack therefrom.
6. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in claim 5, wherein the groove, pitch of which is such that
facilitates its manufacturing with its maximum count.
7. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding as
claimed in any of the preceding claims, which results in improvement in
the endurance life/overall life of wheel.
8. Novel wheel of vehicle for reducing failure of the wheel at welding
substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying
drawings.
