Abstract: This paper sheet processing device (10) is provided with: a feed out unit (16) that feeds out paper sheets one by one that are stored in a storage unit (14) and can alter the feed out speed; detection units (50 66 68) that detect the length in the feed out direction of the paper sheets and the gap between the paper sheets; and a control unit (60) that controls the feed out unit (16). On the basis of the length in the feed out direction of the paper sheets and the gap between the paper sheets detected by the detection units (50 66 68) the control unit (60) controls the feed out unit (16) in a manner so as to alter the feed out speed of the paper sheets in the feed out unit (16) each time paper sheets are fed out by the feed out unit (16).

Specification

I/We claim:
1. A paper sheet handling apparatus comprising:
a retaining unit in which a plurality of paper sheets are stacked;
a feeding unit that feeds out the paper sheets stacked in the retaining unit one by one and can change a feeding speed of the paper sheets;
a transport unit that is driven by a driving system different from a driving system for the feeding unit and transports, one by one, the paper sheets fed out by the feeding unit;
a detecting unit that detects intervals between the paper sheets, an interval between two consecutive paper sheets being a distance between a rear end of a preceding paper sheet that is fed out by the feeding unit and a leading end of a subsequent paper sheet that is fed out; and
a control unit that controls the feeding unit, wherein
the control unit causes the feeding unit to change the feeding speeds of the paper sheets based on the intervals between the paper sheets detected by the detecting unit.
2. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to Claim
1, wherein
a function of intervals between paper sheets and feeding speeds of the paper sheets by the feeding unit is preset in the control unit, and
upon the detecting unit detecting the interval between the paper sheets, the control unit calculates the feeding speed of the paper sheet by the feeding unit by using the function.
3. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to Claim

2, wherein the function is- set such that the feeding speed of the paper sheets by the feeding unit increases as the intervals between the paper sheets increase.
4. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to any
one of Claims 1 to 3, further comprising a banknote length
detecting unit that detects a length in a feeding direction
of each of the paper sheets that are fed out by the feeding
unit, wherein
the control unit controls the feeding unit such that the feeding speed of the paper sheet by the feeding unit is reduced when the length of the paper sheet in the feeding direction detected by the banknote length detecting unit is larger than a predetermined value.
5. A paper sheet handling apparatus comprising:
a retaining unit in which a plurality of paper sheets are stacked;
a feeding unit that feeds out the paper sheets stacked in the retaining unit one by one and can change a feeding speed of the paper sheets;
a transport unit that is driven by a driving system different from a driving system for the feeding unit and transports, one by one, the paper sheets fed out by the feeding unit;
a detecting unit that detects lengths in a feeding direction of the paper sheets that are fed out by the feeding unit; and
a control unit that controls the feeding unit, wherein
the control unit causes the feeding unit to change the feeding speeds of the paper sheets based on the lengths of the paper sheets in the feeding direction detected by the detecting unit.

6. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to Claim
5, wherein
a function of lengths of paper sheets in the feeding direction and feeding speeds of the paper sheets by the feeding unit is preset in the control unit, and
upon the detecting unit detecting the length of the paper sheets in the feeding direction, the control unit calculates the feeding speed of the paper sheets by the feeding unit by using the function.
7. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to Claim
6, wherein the function is set such that the feeding speed
of the paper sheets by the feeding unit reduces as the
length of the paper sheets in the feeding direction
increases.
8. The paper sheet handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 5 to 7, wherein the control unit controls the feeding unit such that the feeding speed of the paper sheet by the feeding unit is reduced when the length of the paper sheet in the feeding direction detected by the detecting unit is larger than a previously set predetermined value.
9. A banknote handling apparatus comprising:
a receiving unit that feeds a plurality of banknotes one by one into an interior of the banknote handling apparatus;
a transport unit that transports the banknotes one by one that are fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit;
a recognition unit that is arranged along the transport unit and that recognizes the banknotes

transported by the transport unit;
a large-capacity stacker that is connected to the transport unit and capable of stacking the banknotes transported by the transport unit;
a small-capacity stacker with a smaller capacity than the large-capacity stacker and that is connected to the transport unit and capable of stacking the banknotes transported by the transport unit;
a sorting kind setting unit that sets a combination of sorting kinds of the to-be-sorted banknotes between the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker;
a stacker setting unit that assigns the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker for stacking the banknotes of each of the sorting kinds set by the sorting kind setting unit; and
a control unit that controls the transport unit to transport the banknote to either one of the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker, based on the combination of the sorting kinds of the banknotes set by the sorting kind setting unit, settings made by the stacker setting unit, and a recognition result of the banknote obtained by the recognition unit.
10. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 9, wherein the sorting kind setting unit is capable of selectively setting any one of the following combinations of the sorting kinds of the banknotes:
a combination of fit banknotes and unfit banknotes,
a combination of face-up banknotes and face-down banknotes,
a combination of new version banknotes and old version banknotes,
a combination of banknotes of a specified denomination

and banknotes of other denominations, and
a combination of portrait-up banknotes and portrait-down banknotes.
11. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 9 or 10, wherein the control unit controls the transport unit to transport a rejected banknote that is rejected owing to failure of recognition by the recognition unit or a transport error, to the small-capacity stacker.
12. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 9 to 11, wherein
the control unit implements a retry processing function by which, after a processing for stacking all the banknotes received by the receiving unit to the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker has been performed, the banknotes stacked in the small-capacity stacker are subjected to a reprocessing when removed from the small-capacity stacker and placed again in the receiving unit, without removing the banknotes stacked in the large-capacity stacker, and
the control unit controls, when implementing the retry processing function, the transport unit so that the banknotes are transported as per the settings made for the processing by the stacker setting unit.
13. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one
of Claims 9 to 12, wherein
the control unit performs a second processing function by which, after a processing for stacking all the banknotes received by the receiving unit to the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker has been performed, the banknotes stacked in the small-capacity stacker are

subjected to a reprocessing when the banknotes stacked in both the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker have been removed and the banknotes stacked in the small-capacity stacker are placed again in the receiving unit, and
the control unit controls, when implementing the second processing function, the transport unit so that the banknotes are transported to an opposite destination in a reverse manner of the settings made for the processing by the stacker setting unit pertaining to the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker.

The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 9 to 13, wherein the control unit confirms, after all the banknotes received by the receiving unit have been processed and stacked in the large-capacity stacker and the small-capacity stacker, the number of banknotes sent to the large-capacity stacker and the number of banknotes sent to the small-capacity stacker, if no rejected banknote is included among the banknotes stacked in the small-capacity stacker.

The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 9 to 14, wherein the stacker setting unit makes settings based on a command issued to the control unit by an operator via an operation unit connected to the control unit, based on account information of processing target banknotes, or based on the recognition result of a first banknote recognized by the recognition unit.
16. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 15, further comprising a memory unit that previously stores therein a relationship between each of the sorting kinds

and each of the stackers for each denomination of the banknotes,
wherein, when making settings based on the recognition result of the first banknote obtained by the recognition unit, the stacker setting unit makes the settings based on the recognition result and contents stored in the memory unit.
17. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 15,
further comprising a memory unit that previously stores
therein a relationship between each of the sorting kinds
and each of the stackers in an associated form with the
account information of the processing target banknotes,
wherein, when making settings based on the account information of the processing target banknotes, the stacker setting unit makes the settings based on the account information of the processing target banknotes and contents stored in the memory unit if the account information of the processing target banknotes is inputted.
18. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 15,
further comprising a memory unit that previously stores
therein a relationship between each of the sorting kinds
and each of the stackers for each account information of
the processing target banknotes as well as for each
denomination of the banknotes,
wherein, when making settings based on the account information of the processing target banknotes as well as the recognition result of the first banknote obtained by the recognition unit, the stacker setting unit makes the settings based on the recognition result of the banknote recognized first and contents stored in the memory unit for each account information of the processing target banknotes.

19. A banknote handling apparatus comprising:
a receiving unit that feeds banknotes one by one into an interior of the banknote handling apparatus;
a transport unit that transports the banknotes one by one that are fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit;
a recognition unit that is arranged along the transport unit and that recognizes and counts the banknotes transported by the transport unit;
a stacking unit that is connected to the transport unit and in which banknotes recognized by the recognition unit as predetermined banknotes are stacked;
a reject unit that is connected to the transport unit and in which banknotes that are not to be stacked in the stacking unit are stacked;
a display unit that displays thereon a counting result of the banknotes obtained by the recognition unit;
a mode switch unit that switches from a normal mode to a specific mode when the banknotes in the reject unit are to be re-recognized after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit are sent to the stacking unit or the reject unit in the normal mode; and
a control unit that, when the mode switch sets the specific mode and the recognition unit recognizes a banknote by omitting at least one of recognition processes, controls the transport unit to send the banknote to either one of the stacking unit and the reject unit based on a recognition result, and also controls the display unit such that the display unit displays thereon the counting result of the banknotes obtained in the normal mode and the counting result of the banknotes obtained in the specific

mode in a distinguishable manner.
20. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 19,
wherein
in the normal mode, the recognition unit recognizes denominations and authenticity of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes, and
in the specific mode, when the banknotes of different denominations are mixed and stacked in the stacking unit, the recognition unit recognizes only the denominations of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes.
21. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 19,
wherein
in the normal mode, the recognition unit recognizes denominations and authenticity of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes, and
in the specific mode, when banknotes of a single denomination are stacked in the stacking unit and banknotes of any other denominations are stacked in the reject unit, the recognition unit does not recognize at least one of the denomination and the authenticity of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes.
22. . The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 19,
wherein
in the normal mode, the recognition unit recognizes denominations, authenticity, and fitness of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes, and
in the specific mode, when either fit banknotes or unfit banknotes of different denominations are mixed and stacked in the stacking unit, the recognition unit does not recognize at least one of the authenticity and the fitness

of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes.
23. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 22, wherein the control unit controls the display unit such that the display unit displays thereon the counting results obtained in the normal mode for the fit banknotes and for the unfit banknotes and the counting result obtained in the specific mode for the fit banknotes or for the unfit banknotes, in a distinguishable manner.
24. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 19, wherein
in the normal mode, the recognition unit recognizes denominations, authenticity, and fitness of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes, and
in the specific mode, when either fit banknotes or unfit banknotes of a single denomination only are stacked in the stacking unit and other banknotes are stacked in the reject unit, the recognition unit does not recognize at least one of the denominations, the authenticity, and the fitness of the banknotes, and counts the number of banknotes.

The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 24, wherein the control unit controls the display unit such that the display unit displays thereon the counting results obtained in the normal mode for the fit banknotes and for the unfit banknotes and the counting result obtained in the specific mode for the fit banknotes or for the unfit. banknotes, in a distinguishable manner.
26. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 19 to 25, wherein the control unit controls the

transport unit such that a transport speed of the banknotes in the specific mode is lower than the transport speed of the banknotes in the normal mode.
27. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 19 to 26, wherein, when the recognition unit recognizes the banknotes with respect to a transport error in the specific mode, if a transport error other than overlaid transport and abnormal length of a banknote is detected, the control unit handles the banknote as not a transport error banknote.
28. A banknote handling apparatus comprising:
a receiving unit that feeds banknotes one by one into an interior of the banknote handling apparatus;
a transport unit that transports the banknotes one by one that are fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit;
a recognition unit that is arranged along the transport unit and that recognizes and counts the banknotes transported by the transport unit, the recognition unit recognizing at least whether a banknote belongs to a first kind or a second kind;
a first stacker that is connected to the transport unit and in which the banknotes sent by the transport unit are stacked, the first stacker having an opening through which the first stacker is accessible from an exterior of the banknote handling apparatus;
a second stacker that is connected to the transport unit and in which the banknotes sent by the transport unit are stacked, the second stacker is accessible from n exterior of the banknote handling apparatus;
a shutter that is arranged corresponding to the first

stacker and that opens and closes the opening of the first stacker;
a shutter driving unit that drives the shutter; and
a control unit that controls the transport unit to send a banknote recognized by the recognition unit as belonging to the first kind to the first stacker and a banknote recognized as not belonging to the first kind to the second stacker, wherein
the control unit controls the shutter driving unit such that the shutter closes the opening of the first stacker while the receiving unit feeds the banknotes one by-one into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus, and
the control unit controls, after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, the shutter driving unit such that the shutter keeps the opening of the first stacker closed when there is a banknote that does not belong to the second kind in the second stacker and that the shutter opens the opening of the first stacker when there is no banknote that does not belong to the second kind in the second stacker.
29. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 28, wherein a banknote of the first kind denotes a fit banknote, and a banknote of the second kind denotes an unfit banknote.
30. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 28, wherein a banknote of the first kind denotes a face-up banknote, and a banknote of the second kind denotes a face¬down banknote.
31. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one

of Claims 28 to 30, wherein, when the opening of the first stacker is closed by the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, and when the banknotes are removed from the second stacker and placed in the receiving unit, the control unit controls the receiving unit such that the banknotes are fed one by one into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit.
32. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one
of Claims 28 to 31, further comprising:
a display unit that displays a counting result of the banknotes obtained by the recognition unit; and
an operation unit that is used by an operator to issue a command to the control unit, wherein
when the opening of the first stacker is kept open by the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, and when a confirmation command is issued from the operation unit to the control unit regarding the counting result of the banknotes displayed on the display unit, the control unit confirms the counting result of the banknotes obtained by the recognition unit.
33. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 32,
wherein, when the opening of the first stacker is closed by
the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the
interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the
receiving unit, and when the confirmation command is issued
from the operation unit to the control unit, the control
unit controls the display unit such that a message
instructing the operator to execute an additional counting
operation is displayed on the display unit.

34. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 32 or 33, wherein, when the opening of the first stacker is closed by the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, and when a command is issued from the operation unit to the control unit to execute an additional counting operation, the control unit controls the shutter driving unit such that the shutter opens the opening of the first stacker.
35. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 34, wherein, when the banknotes are placed in the receiving unit after the command is issued to the control unit to execute the additional counting operation, the control unit controls the shutter driving unit such that the shutter closes the opening of the first stacker.
36. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 34 or 35, wherein, in the additional counting operation, the control unit controls the transport unit such that the banknotes recognized by the recognition unit as belonging to any one of the first kind and the second kind are sent to the first stacker and banknotes recognized as not belonging to any one of the first kind and the second kind are sent to the second stacker.
37. The banknote handling apparatus according to any one of Claims 34 to 36, wherein, in the additional counting operation, the control unit controls the shutter driving unit such that the shutter keeps the opening of the first stacker open if there is a banknote in the second stacker after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of

the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, and that the shutter opens the opening of the first stacker if there is no banknote in the second stacker.
38. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 32, wherein, when the opening of the first stacker is closed by the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, the control unit controls, when there is only one or more counterfeit banknotes in the second stacker and when the confirmation command is issued from the operation unit to the control unit, the display unit such that a message indicating that there is the counterfeit banknote in the second stacker is displayed on the display unit.
39. The banknote handling apparatus according to Claim 32, wherein, when the opening of the first stacker is closed by the shutter after all the banknotes have been fed into the interior of the banknote handling apparatus by the receiving unit, the control unit controls, when there is only one or more counterfeit banknotes in the second stacker and when the confirmation command is issued from the operation unit to the control unit after the banknote has been removed from the second stacker, such that the shutter opens the opening of the first stacker, and

confirms the counting result of the banknotes obtained by the recognition unit.
