Abstract: The high volume of brick earth offers a holistic solution to the problem of meeting the increasing demands in the future in a sustainable manner and at a reduced or no additional cost, and at the same time reducing the environmental impact of industries that are vital to economic development. As natural sources of aggregates are becoming exhausted, it turns out urgent to develop. The majority of abandoned paper waste is accumulated from the countries all over the world causes certain series environmental problems. The potential use of paper waste for producing a low-cost and light weight composite brick as a building material. These alternative bricks were made with papercrete. An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the compressive strength, unit weight, and water absorption. The results show that the effect of high level replacement of paper wastes does not exhibit a sudden brittle fracture, and it reduces the unit weight dramatically and introduces smoother surface compared to the current conventional bricks and concrete blocks in the market. It shows a potential to be used for walls. Wooden board substitute, economically alternative to the conventional bricks and concrete blocks etc.
Description
(a) Preamble
Accumulating of unmanaged wastes especially in developing countries has resulted in an increasing environmental concern. Recycling of such wastes as building blocks appears to be viable solution not only to such pollution problem but also to the problem of economic design of buildings. The increase in the popularity of using environmentally friendly, low-cost and light weight construction materials in building industry has brought about the need to investigate how this can be achieved by benefiting to the environment as well as maintaining the material requirements affirmed in the standards.
The potential use of paper waste for producing a low-cost and light weight composite brick as a building material. These alternative bricks were made with papercrete. The results show that the effect of high-level replacement of paper wastes does not exhibit a sudden brittle fracture, and it reduces the unit weight dramatically and introduces smoother surface compared to the current conventional bricks and concrete blocks in the market. This innovative cost effective bricks can be used for walls and as wooden board substitute and best alternative for conventional bricks.
(b) Advantages
(a) Papercrete bricks are Light weight hence easy to handle
(b) Papercrete bricks are relatively light weight and more flexible, these bricks are potentially ideal material for earthquake prone areas.
(c) Papercrete brick does not expand or contract, so sheets of glass or glass block can be embedded in and trimmed with papercrete.
(d) The papercrete bricks are good sound absorbent, hence paper is used in these bricks. So, these bricks can be used in auditoriums.
(e) To reduce the landfills and pollution,
(f) To reduce total cost about 10% to 20%
(c) Details of the Figures
1. Materials used:
Fig 1(a) shows that the ingredients used in Papercrete blocks. 43 grade Ordinary Portland Cement (conforming to IS: 8112-1989) is used as a binding material. Locally available river sand (conforming to grading zone-II as per IS: 383-1970) is used. Paper is principally wood cellulose. Cellulose is natural polymer. The cellulose chain bristles with polar-OH groups. These groups form hydrogen bonds with -OH group on adjacent chains, bundling, and the chain together. Fly ash used as filler material and also it gives the pozzolana reaction in the mix.
Fig 1 (b) shows that the additives used in Papercrete blocks. These additives are act as water reducing agents in the mix.
2. Preparation of Papercrete block :
Fig. 2 shows that flow chart for detail about preparation of papercrete blocks. Collect the waste paper and it immersed in to water. After one week, the wet papers are converted in to slurry form, and then add all the ingredients in to paper slurry. Finally add the admixture / additive in to the matrix for reducing water absorption purpose. After uniform mixing, the mix is poured in to the specified moulds. After 10 minutes, the moulds are removed. The papercrete blocks are needs sun drying only.
We claim:- Principle Claim:
For effective utilization of waste papers in construction industry, Papercrete building blocks is the good choice and also ecconomic.
