FIELD OF INVENTION:
[001] The present subject matter described herein, relates to a parking assistant 5 system for a vehicle and, in particular, to display text based warning information in segmented LCD of instrument cluster when at least one sensor from a plurality of sensors is not functioning properly.
BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART:
[002] In automotive industry of four wheelers, Park Assist Information systems 10 majorly provide information of obstacle distance to user/driver using the audible device/ sound generating device, such as Buzzer. The park assist information system uses the sensors existing at the rear side and front side of the vehicle. The sensors are ultrasound sensors which measure the distance between the obstacle and the vehicle and provide information to the driver of the vehicle. 15
[003] The Buzzer execution pattern is kept different with respect to distance of obstacle measure from sensors mounted on rear bumper of the vehicle. When the vehicle moves closer to the obstacle, the sound pattern from the buzzer is fast and loud. This method solves the purpose of providing assistance to the driver while parking the vehicle. 20
[004] Many times same audible device is programmed to generate different sound pattern/tone to provide warning to the driver/user for faulty sensors. However, it is extremely difficult for user/driver to remember these multiple audible sounds to identify the faulty sensor and the corresponding faults. User might not understand the audible warning and in some scenarios may damage the 25 vehicle.
[005] Fig. 1 illustrates the park assist system using sound patterns to inform the driver about the error in the sensor. The park assist system 100 includes park assist controller 105, communication channel 106, and an audible device 109. The park assist controller 105 is coupled with a plurality of sensors 101, 102, 103, 104 30
3
at the rear side of the vehicle. The park assist controller 105 gets the status of sensor health continuously and individually for each sensor. The park assist system 100 differentiates the health information of sensor in two categories a) where sensor cleaning is required which includes mud on the surface of the sensor b) where sensor repair is required which includes short circuit, faulty sensor, or 5 loose connection of sensor wire. The communication channel 106 communicates the determined information about the health of the sensors to the indication device, i.e., instrument cluster 107. The audible device 109, i.e., buzzer in the instrument cluster 107 generates the audible warnings based on the information received from the park assist controller 105. The buzzer 109 can be dedicated 10 separate buzzer to generate audible warnings based on the information received from the park assist controller 105.
[006] Further, the park assist controller 105 determines the distance information based on the inputs received from the plurality of sensors 101, 102, 103, 104. The park assist controller 105 also measures the failure or repair requirement of the 15 plurality of sensors 101, 102, 103, 104. Upon determining the different faults in the plurality of sensors 101, 102, 103, 104, the park assist system 100 generates different audible frequency/tone as an output in conjunction with different Buzzer ON/OFF pattern. The park assist system 100 generates these audible tones to inform the driver about the fault in the plurality of sensors 101, 102, 103, 104. 20 However, these types of sound output are very difficult for users to remember and differentiate to judge and take specific actions.
[007] Further, based on the sound warnings, the user/driver can only know that there is malfunction in the park assist system 100. The driver is not able to distinguish between the sound warnings and to decide whether this malfunction is 25 due to sensor fault, system fault or detection inability of the sensor due to mud stuck on the sensor. Therefore, the driver/user can’t take any clear action and has to perform hit and trial by first cleaning the mud around sensors and if the malfunction state continues then user has to go service station to get it corrected.
4
[008] Also if the driver ignores the audible buzzer sounds or by any chance could not hear then there is possibility of vehicle damage and in turn user safety is also compromised.
[009] However, there is no clear mechanism to inform the driver visually about the faulty condition of the park assist system. To facilitate the visual information 5 to the driver, an additional dedicated display device, such as display device on rear mirror is required in the vehicle. But this display device on rear mirror works with the rear camera to assist parking. Further, these display devices are not suitable for the sensors to measure distance between the vehicle and the object. Addition of the dedicate display device and camera at rear side increases the cost 10 of the system due to additional part cost and harness routing cost of the system or high resolution TFT based Instrument cluster system.
[0010] In view of the above, it is beneficial to have a park assist system that reduces requirement of sound generating device for informing the user about faults in the plurality of sensors. Therefore, a simple and inexpensive park assist 15 system is required without incorporating any new display device in the vehicle to display faulty conditions of the plurality of sensors.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
[0011] The principal objective of the present invention is to provide text based visual information of park assist system to user/driver of vehicle. 20
[0012] Another object of the present invention is to use of Alphabet characters to display Text based Warning Message Indication for cleaning the plurality of sensors for clear readability and immediate attention to the user.
[0013] Another object of the present invention is to use of Alphabet characters to display Text based Warning Message Indication for any disconnection or damage 25 to the plurality of sensors for clear readability and immediate attention to the user.
[0014] Another object of the present invention is to display Text based Warning message when vehicle is in Reverse Gear.
5
[0015] Another object of the present invention is to display text based Warning message during Reverse Gear when different types of error condition are present for one or more sensors.
[0016] Another object of the present invention is to display text based warning message continuously when vehicle is in reverse gear and there is an error in one 5 of the plurality of sensors.
[0017] Another object of the present invention is to display text based warning message at regular interval of time when vehicle is in forward gear and there is an error in one of the plurality of sensors.
[0018] Another object of the present invention is to use segmented LCD of 10 instrument cluster to display all the text based warning messages.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
[0019] The present invention relates a parking assistance system for a vehicle. The parking assistance system displays text based warning information in segmented LCD of instrument cluster when at least one sensor from a plurality of 15 sensors is not functioning properly. The parking assistance system detects and displays the text based warning messages/information about malfunctioning of at least one sensor from a plurality of sensors. The parking assistance system has a plurality of sensors, a park assist controller, a communication channel, and an instrument cluster. Further, the instrument cluster has a sound generating device 20 and segmented display device. The plurality of sensors is ultrasound sensors which work on sending and receiving signals. channel. Upon receiving the signal from the park assist controller, the instrument cluster activates the sound generating device for generating the different audible/sound patterns to assist the driver for parking of the vehicle. When there is any fault in the plurality of sensor, the park assist controller receives the corresponding signal from the plurality of sensor and transmits the same to the 5 instrument cluster via communication channel. When the plurality of sensors are not able to send and receives reflected signal properly due to mud or dust on surface of the plurality of sensor. The park assist controller sends the sensor clean signal to the instrument cluster. Upon receiving the sensor clean signal from the park assist controller, the segmented display device of the instrument cluster 10 displays “SENSOR CLEAN” warning message. Similarly, if the plurality of sensors is not able to generate signals due to sensor short circuit, sensor electrical fault and sensor damage, the park assist controller sends a sensor repair signal to the instrument cluster. Upon receiving the sensor repair signal from the park assist controller, the segmented display device of the instrument cluster displays 15 “SENSOR REPAIR” warning message. The park assist controller distinguishes between the distance signals for sound generating device and warning messages for the segmented display devices. Accordingly, the park assist system sends the signal to the sound generating device and segmented display device. The park assist controller sends the warning messages directly to the segmented display 20 device of the instrument cluster. The segmented display device and the sound generating device of the instrument cluster are coupled with the park assist controller through a communication channel.
[0020] Further, the present invention utilizes segmented display of TRIP and ODO METER for displaying the warning messages. The segmented display of the 25 TRIP and ODO METER displays five and six decimal numbers respectively. Thus, 5 characters of the “SENSOR” can be displayed in the TRIP meter area and six characters of “CLEAN” OR “REPAIR” can be displayed in the ODOMETER area. [0032] Fig. 2 illustrates the park assist system for displaying text based warnings in segmented LCD of instrument cluster of a vehicle. The present park assist 25 system 200 includes a plurality of sensors 201, 202, 203, 204 (herein after the plurality of sensors may be referred as 201-204), a park assist controller 205, communication channel 206, a sound generating device 209, and a segmented display device 210. The instrument cluster 207 is coupled with the park assist controller through a communication channel 206 which is LIN communication. 30
11
Further, the instrument cluster 207 has sound generating device 209 and segmented display device 210. The sound generating device 209 and the segmented display device 210 are coupled with the park assist controller 205 via communication channel 206. The plurality of sensors 201-204 is ultrasound sensors which work on sending and receiving signals. When vehicle is in reverse 5 gear, the plurality of sensors 201-204 sends a transmission signal from vehicle in direction of the object. The transmitted signal is reflected by the object, and the plurality of sensors 201-204 receives the reflected signal. The plurality of sensors 201-204 sends the information, basically, time information about the sending and receiving of reflected signal to the park assist controller 205. The park assist 10 controller 205 determines the distance between the vehicle and the object based on the signals received from the plurality of sensors 201-204 and transmits the same to the instrument cluster 207 via the communication channel 206. Upon receiving the distance signal from the park assist controller 206, the instrument cluster activates the sound generating device 209 for generating different 15 audible/sound patterns to assist the driver for parking of the vehicle.
[0033] The communication channel 206 is a single wire communication system between the park assist controller 205 and the instrument cluster 207 to communicate the concluded information about the health of the plurality of sensors 201-204 and distance information. The communication channel 206 20 communicates all the distance signals and instructions for warning messages from the park assist controller 205 to the sound generating device 209 and the segmented display device 210 of the instrument cluster 207, respectively.
[0034] The sound generating device 209 can be a buzzer in the instrument cluster 207 to generate audible sound patterns based on the received instructions/signals 25 from the park assist controller 205 via the communication channel 206. The park assist controller 205 gets the information about the health of the plurality of sensors 201-204 individually for each sensor. The park assist controller 201-204 differentiates health information in two categories a) where sensor cleaning is required which includes mud on the sensors b) where sensor repair is required 30
12
which includes short circuit, faulty sensor, or loose connection of sensor wire. When there is any fault in the plurality of sensor, the park assist controller 205 receives the corresponding signal from the plurality of sensors 201-204 and transmits the same to the instrument cluster 207 via the communication channel 206. When the plurality of sensors 201-204 are not able to send and receives 5 reflected signal properly due to mud or dust on surface of the plurality of sensors 201-204. Based on the signal from the plurality of sensors 201-204, the park assist controller 205 sends a sensor clean signal to the instrument cluster. Upon receiving the sensor clean signal from the park assist controller, the segmented display device of the instrument cluster displays “SENSOR CLEAN” warning 10 message. Similarly, if the plurality of sensors 201-204 is not able to generate signals due to sensor short circuit, sensor electrical fault and sensor damage, the park assist controller 205 sends a sensor repair signal to the instrument cluster 207. Upon receiving the sensor repair signal from the park assist controller 205, the segmented display device 210 of the instrument cluster 207 displays 15 “SENSOR REPAIR” warning message. The park assist controller 205 distinguishes between the distance signals for sound generating device 209 and warning messages for the segmented display device 210. Accordingly, the park assist controller 100 sends the distance signals to the sound generating device 209. The park assist controller 205 sends the warning messages directly to the 20 segmented display device 210 of the instrument cluster 207. The segmented display device 210 and the sound generating device 209 of the instrument cluster 207 are coupled with the park assist controller 205 through a communication channel 206. When there is distance signal, a priority is given to the sound generating device 209 and a communication link between the park assist 25 controller 205 and sound generating device 209 is setup. When there is warning message signal, a priority is given to the segmented signal and a communication link between the park assist controller and the segmented display device 210 is setup.
[0035] Fig. 3 illustrates the segmented LCD display device, in accordance with 30 the present subject matter. The segmented display device 301 (as illustrated 210 in
13
figure 2) has limitations of visual information as there are fixed segments to display text. To create fixed segments for the display of TEXT MESSAGE a new type of LCD has to be manufactured which will increase the size and the cost of the part. This will also increase layout difficulties of instrument cluster. To resolve the present challenge, multiplexing different display indication based on 5 different vehicle conditions is done.
[0036] As shown in Figure-3 the existing display segments layout for the TRIP METER information like TRIP A/ TRIP B/Average Fuel Consumption/RANGE and ODOMETER is such that at the same time both messages can be displayed through different sections. Therefore, the present display area can be utilized for 10 other purposes also.
[0037] The TRIP METER area has feasibility to display five decimal numbers, thus 5 characters of English alphabets can be displayed in this area. The ODO METER area which is just below the TRIP METER area can be utilized in concatenation to display another six characters in the same area. In this in way 15 total eleven (11) characters can be displayed in the segmented display layouts of the TRIP and ODO meter for displaying information. The alphabet characters can be displayed without comprising the readability using these fixed segments. It is also depend on the current available space for displaying number of characters.
[0038] The segmented display device 300 is segment LCD of the instrument 20 cluster 207 which is already displaying information of TRIP meter and ODO Meter. The segmented display of the TRIP and ODO METER displays five and six decimal numbers, respectively. Thus, five characters of the “SENSOR” can be displayed in the TRIP meter area and six characters of “CLEAN” OR “REPAIR” can be displayed in the ODOMETER area. In order to displays the warning 25 messages of the parking assistance system 200 in the TRIP and ODO Meter, priority is given to the signal from the park assist controller 205 when vehicle is in reverse gear. Upon receiving the reverse gear ON status, the instrument cluster 207 sends the park assist controller 205 signals to the segmented display device 301. If there is any signal from the park assist controller 205, priority is given to 30
14
the signal of the park assist controller 205 and the segmented display device 301 displays the text based warning messages. If there is no signal from the park assist controller 205 about malfunctioning of the sensor, the segmented display device 301 displays general TRIP and ODO Meter information.
[0039] The present subject matter utilizes the segmented LCD segments to 5 display park assist text information “SENSOR CLEAN” / “SENSOR REPAIR”. Based on the visual information, the user gets the information directly and takes the corresponding action on the Park Assist System. To display the text information, the segmented LCD or segmented display device 301 of the instrument cluster 207 receives error type information directly from the Park 10 Assist controller 205 through LIN communication. This information is converted into text Information for user action during the error conditions.
[0040] Fig. 4(a) and (b) displays different text based warning messages on the segmented LCD of the instrument cluster of the vehicle. The segmented display device 401 and 402 displays two types of warnings, i.e., temporary failure 15 warning message indication and permanent/repair failure warning message indication. Based on the displayed warnings, the user can take actions accordingly. For example, in the sensor clean warning, the user cleans the sensor and removes the mud present on the sensor. In response to the sensor repair warning, user visits the nearest service station to rectify the error. The error in the 20 sensor repair warning is sensor short circuit, sensor electrical fault, and sensor damage.
[0041] The segmented display device displays the warning messages in the display area of the segmented LCD. Further, the segmented display device can show either information about the TRIP and ODO meter or information about the 25 error messages in the park assistance system. Therefore, only one type of message can be shown in the segmented display device at one time. Hence, there must be priority definition for displaying warning message indication when vehicle’s park assist system is functioning. When vehicle is in reverse gear or Reverse Gear ON Status is present, the instrument cluster receives signal from the park assist system 30
15
through communication channel. Therefore, when vehicle is in the reverse gear the priority is given to signal of the park assist controller and warning messages than the information of TRIP/ODO METER. When the vehicle is in reverse gear condition, text based warning message appear continuously in the segmented display device. If the vehicle is not in reverse gear, i.e., vehicle is in forward gear, 5 the text based warning messages displayed for defined time period and at regular interval of time period.
[0042] Further, when error type is same even for different sensors, same warning message comes continuously on the display area of the segmented display device, when vehicle is in reverse gear. However when error type is different in different 10 sensor, a text message for each sensor according to fault will come for specified time period and this rotation cycle will keep on repeating till the vehicle is in reverse gear and the error condition persist. The instrument cluster will indicate the specific sensor by blinking sensor zone area. The sensor zone area consists of all distance indicating bars to show different distance information. In case of 15 error, the instrument cluster blinks all bar lines together to indicate corresponding sensor zone.
[0043] Further, if there is any fault in the at least one sensor from the plurality of sensors, the parking assistance system 200 displays the text based warning message on the segmented LCD of the instrument cluster at least one time when 20 vehicle is ignited. The parking assistance system 200 displays the text based warning messages on the segmented LCD or segmented display device of the instrument cluster periodically or at regular interval of time when vehicle is in forward gear.
[0044] Although embodiments for the present subject matter have been 25 described in language specific to structural features, it is to be understood that the present subject matter is not necessarily limited to the specific features described. Rather, the specific features and methods are disclosed as embodiments for the present subject matter. Numerous modifications and adaptations of the system/device of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, 30
