Phase Barrier/Phase Insulator in Multiphase Circuit Breaker
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to circuit breakers, and more particularly to phase barrier/phase separator in multiphase circuit breakers-Background of the invention
Generally, multiphase circuit breaker has distinct phases such as R, Y, B and neutral phase. During tripping operation of the circuit breaker, all contacts of each phase of the R, Y, B and neutral phase get open simultaneously which causes interruption of the electric current. During this interruption of the electric current, hot ionized gases, which are conductive in nature, are produced surrounding the each phase. When such ionized gases of one phase get mixed with the ionized gases of other adjacent phase, such mixture of the ionized gases makes air to lose its dielectric property. As a result, an arc gets established between these two phases. This is an electrically short circuit condition which may lead to severe damages of the system.
The arcing produced between two phases of the circuit breaker damages the circuit breaker which is designed for the protection purposes and downgrades dielectric properties of the material with which it is generally manufactured.
Accordingly, there exists a need to provide a device does not allow gases or ionized vapors from adjacent phases to get mixed and eliminates possibility of arcing between two phases.

Object of the invention
An object of the present invention is to avoid arcing between two phases of the circuit breaker.
Another object of the present invention is increase creepage distance between two phases of the circuit breaker.
Summary of the invention
Accordingly, the present invention provides a phase barrier/phase separator for multiphase circuit breaker. The phase barrier/phase separator includes an elongated body member having at least two windows configured thereon, an opening configured on the elongated body member for securing hardware thereto for fixing the elongated body member to a housing of the circuit breaker, and a plurality of protrusions configured on rear side of the elongated body member for click fitting the elongated body member to slots configured on housing of the circuit breaker. The phase barrier/phase separator further includes at least two wails. Each wall of the two walls extends outwardly from each side of the elongated body member. When the elongated body member is secured to the housing of the circuit breaker, the two windows facilitates surrounding pole assembly of the circuit breaker, and the two walls provide physical insulation between three adjacent phases.

Detailed description of the invention
The foregoing objects of the present invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with the prior art, techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention as described below in the preferred embodiment
The present invention provides a phase barrier/phase separator for multiphase circuit breaker, in accordance with the present invention. The phase barrier/phase separator acts as a insulator between two adjacent phases and does not allow gases or ionized vapors from adjacent phases to get mixed. Further, the phase barrier/phase separator eliminates possibility of arcing between two phases by increasing the creepage distance between two phases.
Referring to figure 1, 2 and 3, there is shown a phase barrier/phase separator (100) (hereinafter "the barrier [100]") for multiphase circuit breaker, in

accordance with the present invention. The barrier (100) includes an elongated body member (10) and two walls (20a, 20b).
The elongated body member (10) includes at least two windows (12a, 12b) configured thereon. In an embodiment, the at least two windows (12a, 12b) are rectangular windows configured on the elongated body member (10) one below another.
The elongated body member (10) includes an opening (14) configured thereon for securing elongated body member (10) by securing hardware thereto for fixing the elongated body member (10) to a housing (110) of the circuit breaker (200). In an embodiment, the hardware is a screw used for securing the elongated body member (10) to the housing.
The elongated body member (10) further includes a plurality of protrusions (16) configured on rear side (10c) of the elongated body member (10) for click fitting the elongated body member (10) to slots (not shown) configured on housing (110) of the circuit breaker (20). For the purpose of explanation, the rear side (10c) of the elongated body member (10) includes a first protrusion (16a) configured centrally above the window (12a), and two elongated protrusions (16b, 16c) configured on either side of window (12a).
Further, the barrier (100) includes at least two side walls (20a, 20b). Each side wall of the two side walls (20a, 20b) extends outwardly from each side of the elongated body member (10). In an embodiment, the two side walls (20a, 20b) are configured in parallel position on the elongated body member (10). For example, the side wall (20a) extends outwardly from side (10a) of the elongated body member (10) and the side wall (20b) extends outwardly from

side (10b) of the elongated body member (10}. Specifically, the elongated body member (10) and the two walls (20a, 20b) are molded together to form a single unit.
Upon securing the barrier (100) to the housing (110) of the circuit breaker(200), the two windows (12a, 12b) facilitates surrounding of pole assembly of the circuit breaker (200), and the two side walls (20a, 20b) provides physical insulation between adjacent phases of the circuit breaker. For example, when the barrier (100) is secured on the middle phase (120) of three pole circuit breaker as shown in figure 4, provides insulation between adjacent phases of the three poles and increases the creepage distance between two adjacent phases by use of two side walls (20a, 20b). Thus, all the three phases of the multiphase circuit breaker (200) gets isolated from each other.
In an embodiment, the elongated body member (10) and the two walls (20a, 20b) are made of thermoplastic material.
The barrier (100) of the present invention ensures elimination of possibility of mixing of ionized gases from adjacent phases of the multiphase circuit breaker and also eliminated causing electrical arcing between the two phases of the multiphase circuit breaker. This maintains physical and electrical integrity when circuit breaker is in operation.
Advantages of the invention
1. The barrier (100) isolates two phases of the multiphase circuit breaker thereby eliminating possibility of arcing between adjacent phases.

2. The barrier (100) provides increase in creepage distance so as to obstruct
arc from getting struck between adjacent phases.
3. The barrier (100) ensures no fall of foreign material from top simultaneously on two phases & allowing them to form short circuit path.
4. The barrier (100) ensures no shorting within the same phase.
5. The barrier (100) provides additional cover to current transformer present
in the circuit breaker in the rear side.
The foregoing object the invention is accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with prior art techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention described in the present embodiment. Detailed descriptions of the preferred embodiment are provided herein; however, it is to be understood that the present invention may be embodied in various forms. Therefore, specific details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but rather as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed system, structure, or matter. The embodiments of the invention as described above and the methods disclosed herein will suggest further modification and alterations to those skilled in the art. Such further modifications and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
