A pin-type synchronizer (20) selectively operative to frictionally synchronize and positive connect either of first and second drives (14,16) to a shaft (12) having an axis (12a); the synchronizer comprising: first and second jaw members (34,36) affixed respectively to the first and second drives (14,16) and respectively engagable with axially movable third and fourth law members (60, 52) In response to an axial bi-directional shift force (Fo) moving a radially extending flange (46); first and second friction members (30, 32) respectively secured for rotation with the first and second drives (14, 16) and third and fourth friction members (40, 42) concentric to the shaft (12) and axially movable between the drives for frictional engagement respectively with the first and second friction members to provide a synchronizing torque for synchronizing the drives with the shaft; blocker means operative when engaged for preventing engagement of the Jaw members prior to the synchronizing, the blocker means comprising a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart pins (44) rigidly extending axially between the third and fourth friction members (40,42) and into a set of openings (46a) in the flange (46), each of the pins having a blocker shoulder (44a) engagable with a blocker shoulder (46b) defined about the associated opening (46a); pluralities of first and second self-engergizing ramps means respectively engageable in response to the synchronizing torque for producing an additive force (Fa) on the flange (46) in the direction of the shift force (Fo) for increasing total engaging force on the friction members (30,40 and 32, 42), the first self-energizing ramp means (54b, 54c, 54d,54e) affixed against rotation relative to the flange (46) and the second self-energizing ramp means (24d, 24e and 26d, 26e) affixed against rotation and axial movement relative to the shaft (12); characterized in that the first and second self-energizing ramp moons disposed radially inward of the third and fourth Jaw members; and limit means (24f, 26f or 123a, 127a) engage to limit axial movement of the third and fourth Jaw members (50, 52) duringengagement respectively with the first and second jaw members (34, 36) and during engagement of the first and second self-energizing ramp means, whereby torque transmission between the shaft and the engaged Jaw members is via the engaged self-energizing ramp means which provide a stay engaged force for maintaining engagement of the engaged Jaw members.
