Abstract: A preconfigured blank of truncated rectangular shape is disclosed. The blank has an octagonal base having a pair of parallel scored lines that are separated by a predefined distance "d" and a concentric wall periphery having a predefined height "h" that is approximately equal to the distance "d" that surrounds the octagonal base. The blank is advantageously facilitated to be folded along the boundary that the octagonal base shares with the wall periphery to form an open tray container. DESC:PIZZA TRAY CONVERTIBLE INTO CLOSED CONTAINER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to tray-like containers made of cardboard, paperboard or
similar lightweight foldable sheet material, primarily for containing food items, for example,
pizza, pizza pies, for sale and takeaway. More particularly, the present invention the present
invention relates to an open tray-like container that is convertible into a closed container.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Usually a whole pizza is divided into a plurality of slices or pizza pies. It is normal for
pizza eaters to eat a good number of pizza pies in the pizza parlour and take the remaining
pizza pies home in the same pizza box or a different pizza container.
The prior art pizza trays, boxes or containers do not have pizza tray containers that are
particularly innovated to be easily converted into a closed container for carrying unconsumed
pizza pies. The prior art pizza boxes, therefore, lack paper efficiency and lot of cardboard or
paper is wasted. The prior art pizza containers, therefore, have a significant scope for
improvement in terms of paper efficiency.
What is needed is a blank made of cardboard, paper or any similar foldable material that
has an arrangement of fold lines, scored lines and slits that advantageously facilitates erection
of pizza tray that allows easy conversion of the tray into a closed container.
What is needed is a pizza tray that advantageously allows easy conversion of the tray into
a closed container and achieves a greater degree of paper efficiency. The present invention
addresses the need for a convertible pizza tray and also achieves significant cost cutting by
improving paper efficiency.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring to Figures 1-6, a preconfigured truncated rectangular blank (100) that is used
to construct a pizza tray container in accordance with the present invention includes an
octagonal base (102). The octagonal base (102) is defined and bounded by a plurality of
folding lines (104). The octagonal base a pair of parallel scored lines (106 and 108) that are
separated by a predefined distance 'd’. The blank (100) has a concentric wall periphery (110)
having a predefined height 'h' that is approximately equal to distance 'd' that surrounds the
octagonal base (102).
The blank (100) is advantageously facilitated to be folded along the boundary that is
defined by fold lines (104) that the octagonal base shares with the wall periphery (110) to form
an open tray container. The octagonal base (102) is advantageously facilitated to be folded
along the parallel scored lines (106 and 108) to form a closed container as shown in Figure 6.
The blank (100) has four truncated flaps (112) that are diagonally located. The flaps
(112) are folded along folding lines (114). The wall periphery contiguous to the flaps (112)
has folding lines (104) that have slits (116). The truncated flaps (112) are folding along the
folding lines (114) and inserted into the slits (116) and locked. The entirety of wall periphery
(110) is erected along the folding lines (104). Each wall periphery (110) is separated from the
adjacent wall periphery (110) by a separating section (118). Each separating section (118) has
at least a folding line (120). The separating section (118) gets inserted inside the wall
periphery (11) when the wall periphery is erected along the folding lines (104).
The folding lines (106 and 108) that are separated by a predefined distance ‘d’ that is
approximately equal to the height of the wall periphery ‘h’ divides the octagonal base into a
first half (122) and a second half (124).
The two wall periphery segments (110) that have folding lines (104) that are
perpendicular to the scored lines (106 and 108) have folding lines (126) and dotted perforated
lines (128).
In order to construct a pizza tray, the truncated flaps (112) are folded along the folding
lines (114) and then inserted into the slits (116). The wall periphery is erected by folding along
the folding lines (104). When the wall periphery (110) is erected, the separating sections (118)
are automatically folded along folding lines (12) and then get inserted inside the wall
periphery (110). Thus, a pizza tray (130), as shown in Figure 2, is formed out of blank (100)
The pizza tray (130) thus formed is then converted into a closed container (132) of
Figure 6. First, each wall periphery (110) that has folding lines (104) that are perpendicular to
the scored lines (106) and (108) is torn apart at perforated line (126). The wall periphery (110)
is then folded along folding line (128) such that the folded part of the periphery (11) is along
the scored line (108). The first half (122) is then folded along the scored line (106) and then
the wall periphery (110) of the first half (122) is placed inside the wall periphery (110) of the
second half (124). Thus, the tray (130) is converted into the closed container (132) of Figure 6.
Referring to Figure 8, another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. In
this particular embodiment, a blank (200) has two locking elements (210 and 212) located on
opposite sides and a tearing portion (214) that advantageously facilitates construction of the
blank into a tray.
Referring to Figure 9, yet another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. In
this particular embodiment, a blank (300) has two diagonally located truncated flaps (310).
