Background of the Invention :
Applied Science Innovations Pvt. Ltd. (ASIPL) is working in the area of printing and publishing of books and research journals and owns an offset printing press. The large amount of paper-waste generated in the press has made the inventors / authors to think for an alternative / substitute to paper for printing technology - in general (notebooks, books, news papers, journals etc.). Paper is usually fabricated using tree parts and hence requires cutting of trees. This disturbs the environment to a large extent (for example, changes in weather conditions, Global Warming etc.). The best possible alternative for paper is the plastic / polymeric sheets / pages. The present invention is related to bound or unbound, water-proof, flexible or otherwise book printed on plastic pages (sheets). The present invention is expected to reduce the use of paper, cutting of tress and thus is an environment friendly technological product. Further, the waste plastic generated by the society can be recycled and be made into plastic pages / sheets form and can be used in making the present invented books - making it a truly Eco-friendly Product.
1. Field of Invention :
The present invention is related to bound or unbound book made using plastic pages and cover. Plastic / polymeric sheets are used as pages instead of paper - for printing the book. The invented book and the information printed / written in it is water-proof. The book can be flexible or otherwise depending upon the thickness of each page and number of pages in it. Present book can be bound by several types such as spiral binding, Coil binding, patti binding or by heating, melting and fusing one end (edge) of the pages etc. The plastic / polymeric sheets can be transparent (like over-head-projector

transparency sheets) or colored or white. The present invention is expected to reduce the use of paper, cutting of tress and thus is an environment friendly technological product. Further, the waste plastic generated by the society can be recycled and be made into plastic pages form and can be used in making the present invented notebooks - making it a truly Eco-Friendly Product.
2. Description of Prior Art :
A bound or an unbound collection of paper pages on which information is printed or hand-written is known as a book. In the ancient Indian civilization (before the invention of the paper), the information was written on the lotus leaves, on wooden stripes, on metal sheets and on cloths. A bound hand-written manuscript is also called as a book. Today, books are mainly made using paper. In case of a permanently bound book, new information could not be added (without destroying its binding and hence the book). In case of a temporary bound book (for example : spirally bounded or stapled or patti-file bound) or an unbound book, new information could be easily added. Usually, such collection of pages is protected from both sides by a cover. Presently, books are printed / written on paper sheets (i.e. both pages and cover sheet). Different methods such as padding, perfect, spiral, comb, sewn, clasp, disc, pressure, patti of binding are used for binding the book pages and keeping them together. Book may contain pages of uniform dimensions or different dimensions; same or different color; with or without watermarks. Generally, books printed on paper have a limited lifetime. This is due to the fact that factors like water, oil, weather condition of the surrounding have a strong effect on the paper. Further, such books printed on paper need extra care to protect them from paper eating insects. Hence, one has to spend lots of money in preserving them for long times.

Certain books are used for limited time (For example : books used by college or high-school students are used only for one year and are then discarded) and are then given for recycling (for recycling of paper). In the process of recycling, paper from these books goes through recycling process and new paper will be created, usually known as a Recycled Paper. This process of recycling paper and creating a Recycled Paper (ready to use) - is a long, tedious and uneconomical process consisting of several steps such as collection of waste paper (books), sending them to the paper industry, removal of the printed ink from the paper, making the paper pulp, making the recycled paper from the pulp, packing and sending it to the market and finally distributing it to customers.
Presently used books are made from paper (i.e. both pages and cover sheet). New paper is generally fabricated by using tree-parts as starting raw materials and hence requires cutting of trees. In view of environmental impact of cutting trees, it is highly needed to find an alternative to paper or to develop ways of efficiently using the paper and its recycling and reuse. Paper books (books printed on paper) have certain limitations that they can be damaged by water and certain biological insects and thus have limited life time. Present invention overcomes the drawbacks of the paper books; since plastic is mostly biologically non-degradable. A suitable plastic / polymeric sheet can be a good alternative to the paper. Transparency sheet (a kind of plastic sheet, also known as OHP sheet) is in use for writing / printing on it and for presentation purpose. It is also used now-a-days for teaching and learning process in classrooms. Specially designed transparency sheets are also available in the market for laser printing, ink-jet printing and Photocopying. Considering this previous knowledge available, It is thought to make a book using plastic sheets as pages.

3. Summary of Invention :
In general, the term 'Book' refers to a bound / unbound collection of paper pages on which information is previously printed or handwritten. The present invention is related to 'Plastic Book' in which information is printed / hand-written on plastic pages / sheets and such sheets are bound together permanently or are held together temporarily. Plastic pages used in this notebook could be made of either pure plastic or a plastic composite (polymer composite). These plastic pages / sheets can be of any color such as transparent, white, colored or mixed colored and can be bound together by different methods such as spiral binding, coil binding, patti-binding, heating-melting and fusing one edge of all the plastic sheets and cover present in the book etc. Information is printed on these plastic pages / sheets and then they are bound together to form a book. Information can be printed on such plastic sheets / pages by variety of methods such as but not limited to offset printing, screen printing, Photocopying, laser printing, ink-jet printing, hand-writing with pen or marker, painting with brush etc.
It is important to note here that the present invention is expected to reduce the use of paper, cutting of tress and thus is an environment friendly technological product / technology. Further, the waste plastic generated by the society can be recycled and be made into plastic pages form and can be used in making the present invented notebooks - making it truly an environment friendly and Green Product.

5. Detailed description of the Invention with reference to drawings / examples :
Reference will now be made in detail to various embodiments of the invention, one or more examples of which are set forth below. Each embodiment is provided by way of explanation of the invention, not limitation of the invention. In fact, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations may be made in the present invention without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. For instance, features illustrated or described as a part of one embodiment may be used in another embodiment to yield a still further embodiment. Thus, it is intended that the present invention cover such modifications and variations as come within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents.
In one of the example, spirally bound book made of polyester pages / sheets and colored plastic cover of A4 size is made. Optionally, the cover could also be made of paper or card sheets also. The spiral binding process used for making this book is similar to that of the conventional process used for manufacturing paper book. In a typical procedure, one edge of all plastic pages and cover is punched with holes and a wire is oven through these holes. Information is printed on each page separately {before binding process) by way of photocopying process. The information written is water-proof i.e. don't get damaged easily by the attack of water. However, information written can be easily erased by wiping the cotton soaked in an appropriate organic solvent like acetone. The book is also non-tearable by simple hands.

Here, the plastic book is fabricated by printing the information by photocopying process. However, in general, the process of printing information on plastic pages can be anything like writing by pen or brush with color and hand, photocopying screen printing, offset printing, ink-jet printing, laser printing, of a combination of these methods etc. In one embodiment, the plastie pages used in this book are colored, white, black or are of mixed colors A handwritten book can also be made by writing the information on each plastic page by using a pen (marker) and ink of suitable color.
The plastic pages can be made of polyester. However, plastic pages could also be made from other suitable polymers like Polyester, Low density Polyethylene (LDPEJ, High density polyethylene (HDPE), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyproylene (P1P1) etc. They can also be made from the recycled waste plastic. In one embodiment, the transparent polyester sheets of thickness 75 microns are used. However, it is optional to choose the thickness of plastic sheets. Higher thickness of plastic sheets will contribute to increase the weight of the book, making it bulky.
In an another embodiment, staple binding is used for making the book. Optionally, the other methods of binding such as stitching, patti-binding, spiral binding, comb binding, perfect binding, heating-melting and fusing one edge of the plastic pages. etc. could be applied for binding these books.
Applications :
Present invention enables 'Plastic Books' - in which information is printed or hand-written on plastic pages / sheets and are bound together permanently or are held together temporarily. Such a 'Plastic

Book' is water-proof i.e. the book do not get damaged by water. Plastic books have at least one of the following characteristics : (1) have plastic / polymeric pages or sheets (2) longer life than conventional paper books (since plastic is biologically non-degradable and have less effect of the environment) (3) water-proof and (4) flexible. With the invention of Plastic books, it is expected to reduce the use of paper and thus cutting of tress. This should help to protect the environment. Further, the waste plastic generated by the society can be recycled and be made into plastic pages form and can be used in making the present invented books - making it a truly Green Product. Plastic books can replace paper books almost in all applications.
EXAMPLE 1 : Spirally bound Plastic Book (using polyester sheets) by Photocopying printing process :
Information is printed on Polyester sheets (75 microns thick) by photocopying process and holes are punched on the left side of each page / sheet. A wire was wound through these holes to make spirally bound plastic book. Colored polyester thick sheet is used as a cover -both from front and back side. A white color paper can be held at the back of the polyester sheet / page while reading the information printed in the book.
EXAMPLE 2 : Steple bound Plastic Book (using polyester sheets) by Laser printing process :
Information is printed on Polyester sheets (75 microns thick) by laser printing process and are held together by Steple bound for making the Plastic book. Top and bottom cover used is again colored polyester thick sheet. A white color paper can be held at the back of the

polyester sheet / page while reading the information printed in the book.
EXAMPLE 3 : Patti-file bound Plastic Book (using polyester sheets) by screen printing process :
Information is printed on Polyester sheets (75 microns thick) by screen printing process and are held together by Patti-file (removable / temporary binding) for making the Plastic Book. Top and bottom cover used is again colored polyester thick sheet. A white color paper can be held at the back of the polyester sheet / Page while reading the information printed in the book.
