Abstract: The polyurethane Side Bearer Assembly is an innovaJtive design that has eliminated the use of either natural rubber or metal spring as the resilient element in it. It is an improved design over both the metal to rubber bonded design and the helical steel spring loaded design. The introduction of Pdlyurethane (PU) Side Bearer Assembly in the CASNUB bogies will significantly improve the Riding Quality and speed potential of the wagons using these bogies. It will also reduce the wheel rail contact forces both in empty and loaded conditions of the wagons. The PU side bearer will have la longer life than the conventional metal bonded rubber or steel spring loaded side bearers, thereby reducing the frequent replacement of the component and reducing the maintenance costs.
4. Description of Invention:
Polvurethane Side Bearer Assembly for CASNUB BOGIE of WAGON of Indian Railways.
Field of Invention; ' . This invention relates to Railway Rolling Stock, Particularly the goods wagon, The Polymer Side Bearer Assembly comprising a Top & Bottom housing encasing a single polymer Coulmn provides the tertiary suspension between the super structure (Car Body) and the bolster in a wagon fitted with CASNUB Bogie on India Railways. The Polymer column acts as the resilient material in the suspension assembly. Introduction of Polymer Side Bearer assembly will significantly improve the riding quality and speed potential of the wagon with CASNUB bogie. It will also reduce the wheel-rail contact forces both in empty and loaded conditions of the wagon.
Detailed Description of the Invention:
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing No. ARL/080920. The drawing shows the elevation and plan of the Polymer Side Bearer Assembly including a cross sectional view (a). It also shows an exploded three dimensional view (b) and a cross-section of the assembly in three dimensions(c).
As shown in the drawing the Polymer Side Bearer Assembly consists of-
1) One Top Housing - cylindrical with a solid base made of forged steel to IS: 1875 CI. -
rV/EN-9/EN-8.
2) One Bottom Housing - Cylindrical body on an elliptical solid base with two drilled holes
on two ends as shown. Bottom Housing is also made of forged steel to IS; 1875
CL.IV/EN-9/EN-8. and
3) One Polymer column as the resilient element in the side bearer.
Properties of Polymer used in the Polymer Side Bearer Assembly:
General Properties:
The Polymer used in the manufacture of resilient column of the Polymer Side Bearer Assembly has a high temperature and abrasion resistance with high resilience and hydraulic stability.
\yorking Environment:
The Polymer Side Bearer Assembly is capable or working under extreme temperature and humidity variations and is not affected by rain, dust etc.
Advantage of using Polymer Side Bearer Assembly;
The Polymer Side Bearer Assembly is intended to replace the spring loaded side bearer of CASNUB (HS) bogie and the metal bonded rubber Side Bearer used in QASNUB (NLB) Bogie. The special polymer used for manufacturing the resilient column is; a synthetic chemical compound endowed with a lot of advantages over the natural rubber usied in the conventional metal bonded rubber side bearer and also over the steel helical springs. The high quality Polymer material exhibits satisfactory heavy duty service performance. Some of the advantages of using the polymer side bearer Assembly are given below:
i) The Polymer Side Bearer Assembly is so designed that it can l|e fitted in the existing
location on the bolster without any modification/alternation to ithe bolster,
ii) It will cater for higher loads as required for the high axle load wagon,
iii) With the introduction of the Polymer Side Bearer Assembly the riding quality and
speed potential will improve, both in empty and loaded conditions, iv) Wheel-rail contact forces will reduce due to the improved lateral characteristics of
the Side Bearer, thereby reducing the wear of wheel and rail ahd also increasing their
life, v) The curve negotiating characteristics will improve due t(i> the improved bogie
rotation/yawing characteristics with the fitment of the 'polymer Side Bearer
Assembly, vi) The Polymer Side Bearer will have a longer life than the conventional spring loaded
or metal to rubber bonded side bearer. i

I Claim:
1. Polymer Side Bearer Assembly to be used in the tertiary stage of suspension
between the bolster and the vehicle body is an innovative design, which acts
as suitable substitute for the conventional rubber to metal bonded Side Bearer
assembly used in the CASNUB (NLB) Bogie and the spring loaded metallic
Side Bearer Assembly used in the CASNUB (HS) bogie.
2. Introduction of Polymer Side Bearer Assembly will imprpve the riding quality
and speed potential of the BOXN Wagon and also reduce the lateral rail-wheel
interaction forces thereby reducing the wear of wheel and rail faces -
therefore, life of both wheel and the rail will increase.
