Portable Light Table

Abstract: "Portable Light Table" is an important and essential gadget for Graphic artists, illustrators, Animation Professionals, Drafters as well as for students for tracing patterns and designs. It has a very wide application in the development animation drawings. It is also an inevitable accessory for an art student to trace intricate pictures with finer details. The portable light table is a surface lit gadget which provides sufficient illumination to reproduce 2D pictures with all its minute details. This Portable Light Table according to present invention comprises of, an elastomer sheet of suitable dimension A4 / A3 with a frosted face, LED illuminating light source and a rear mirror/polished reflective surface. The elastomer sheet is placed over the reflective surface, so that frosted face and the reflective face are facing each other. The LED strips are wrapped around the assembly all along the thickness. The key feature of this portable light table is that uneven surface of the elastomer sheet makes the path of the light visible evenly throughout the top surface, and reflective back plate helps in throwing additional light out through the elastomer.

Background of the Invention:

The present invention is based on the combination optics and electronics. This invention relates to a thin portable light table, which has a surface lit up with light. Previously designed box type Light tables used a frosted or plain glass as the top surface. The older design used either florescent or incandescent lamps as the light source, which is placed at the bottom of the box to light the top surface. The top glass or elastomer plate sits on a recessed flange which used to get dislodged or moved during transportation. This often resulted in breaking of the top surface. The electric lamps were kept as deep as possible to provide good diffusion of light and to avoid hot spot which made the whole unit huge and bulky. These light tables had fixed illumination and were hard to use effectively when the patterns are dark with intricate details. A long hour of operation resulted in overheating of the light box and artist were finding it difficult to use. Most of the previous light tables are mains operated due to the configuration of light source which made it as a laboratory gadget rather than portable user friendly tool.

The main objective of this invention

1. Is to provide a highly portable light table.
2. is to provide a handy tool with a Battery/Eliminator for tracing and or developing animation pictures indoor or outdoor.
3. is to provide uninterrupted and uniformly distributed light at the drawing surface without generating heat or dark spots.
4. is to be easily assembled with fewer parts, less complexity to facilitate easy transportation/couriering/storing.
5. is to give user the comfort and an aesthetic appeal while using this product.

Description of the Drawing:

Detailed description of the drawing for constructing the product:
In accordance to the above figures, the preferred embodiment of present invention is shown. The portable light table consists of three parts namely the casing parts, the LED strip part2 and the elastomer/glass sheet parti. Basically these parts are assembled together in such a way that the LED strips part2 are wrapped all along the thickness which is enclosed inside a casing part3. This casing is made of aluminum 14 Gauge strong enough to contain all the parts and provide suitable rigidity for portability and protect from physical damage.

The clear elastomer/glass sheet part 1 has a clear face 1 and its opposite is frosted to a surface finish of grade 320 to give uniform dispersion of light. The LED strip part2 where LEDs' are embedded on an electronic strip which can be bent to the required configuration. The casing part3 has a base 6 to which there are flanges 5 on all four sides constructed through bending. The flanges 5 are bent to ninety degrees with a bending radius of 1mm. The base 6 is initially constructed with a radius at the edges making it blunt to prevent sharp corners. These side flanges 5 are further bent at ninety degrees to enclose the elastomer/glass sheet parti and LED strip part2 within part3 as casing. The radii manipulated edges of the base 6 are also bent at ninety degrees to make an edge flange 4, so that it gives an aesthetic value in the case of looks. The inside surface of the bottom plate is slightly convexed and highly polished to reflect the light beam uniformly.

CLAIMS:

1. A portable light table, comprising of: a aluminum box channel assembly with a frosted elastomer top surface, a highly polished convex reflective bottom surface, with LED strip mounted all-round the side wall. The box edges joined by specially curved corner design to have smooth finish. The whole assembly is provided with suitable cover to protect the top surface from scratches.

2. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the top and bottom plates are held by light aluminum channels with rounded edge configuration.

3. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the said top illuminated surface is an elastomer of size 310 X 220 X10 (LXBXH in mm) plate which has a frosted inside face and a polished outer surface to provide uniform dispersion of light.

4. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the overall box thickness is 10 mm.

5. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the said space between top and bottom plate is illuminated by a strip of LED all around.

6. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the said light source is illuminated by AC - DC eliminator. 220 AC to 12 Volt DC output.

7. The portable light table of claim 6 wherein the said electric power source can be substituted by a DC battery source, 12 Volt Rechargeable battery

8. The portable light table of claim 1 wherein the intensity of LED illumination placed all around can be varied by a suitable liner potentiometer from Zero intensity to maximum intensity.
