COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
TITLE
Process for formulation of herbal liniment/ oil for topical application
Statement of Inventor:
The invention relates to novel processes to formulate herbal based liniment/oil
(Birsol) for topical application. The synergistic properties comprises with powder of
rhizome and roots of Lygodium flexuosum, powders of root bark and leaves of Calotropis
spp., seeds of Datura spp., leaves of Piper betel, Eucalyptus oil, Turpentine oil of Pinus
spp. and in a base of mustard oil are present in the formulation of liniment/oil. The
topical application of liniment/oil is highly effective in chronic joint pains and
inflammation.
Background of the Invention with regard to Prior art
Most of the marketed ointment /oil or liniment and balm provide temporarily
relief in pain when topically applied. But after 2-3 hours the pains again starts. Therefore,
person suffering from joint pain or any causes takes pain killer or analgesic tablets orally.
Sometimes more uses of analgesic are harmful to health. In Ayurveda, there are many
products are available. Although, in the invention comparisons have not been provided
regarding activity with marketed products due to their large numbers. The Eucalyptus oil1
and Turpentine oil2-3 is used externally in pain. However, the chronic joint pain is not
relieved. In the present invention, when the root bark and leaves of Calotropis spp., seeds
of Datura metel., leaves of Piper betel mixed and processed as admixture in oil of
Eucalyptus and Turpentine shows synergistic effect in chronic pain and relief of sign and
symptoms in chronic pain. But, the present formulation prepared after the invented
process and novel ratio of ingredients as novel mixture have potent effect and long term
relief. References have been provided in Dravyaguna of Ayurveda that Calotropis
procera and Calotropis gigantea is 'Ark' and the poultice of warm leaves are used for
relief in pain. It contains calotropin and other chemical constituents. It has also been
mentioned in the text of ayurveda that Datura metel. known as 'Dhatur' and useful for
pain when their ingredients externally applied. Alkaloid like atropine and hyoscyamine
are present in the seeds of plant. Reference is also available about Piper betel known as
'Tambul' in ayurveda and useful in pain when applied externally. There are a large
number of information are available in the text of Ayurveda4 in websites regarding
different uses of selected ingredients for formulation. The turpentine oil extracted from
Pinus roxburghii known as 'Gandhbiroja' are also used externally for pain relief. The
external application of Eucalyptus oil is useful in pain, however it has multiple uses. It
has been also patented in US patent 4251383 for soap and detergent cleaning composition
as containing in Eucalyptus oil; while patent WO/2008/011699 is for Eucalyptus oil
based fungicide. Reference 5 is also available that rhizome and roots of Lygodium
flexuosum are useful in rheumatism when applied externally. The colorant used in the
formulation is the powder of root barks of 'Ratanjot' (Arnebia spp.) which also utilizes to
colors for food stuffs and hence it is safe.
But, best of my knowledge and search there are not any process or products or
patents are available where the above selected ingredients are present in single
formulation. Therefore, the present invention comprises with novel composition of
selected plant ingredients with a novel process of formulation (Birsol) to enhance the
efficacy and relief in chronic pain in topical application.

Object of the Invention
The primary object of the invention is to invent process to formulation of liniment/oil
(Birsol) and development of product which includes the selected composition of powder
of rhizome and roots of Lygodium flexuosum, powders of root bark and leaves of
Calotropis spp., seeds of Datura spp., leaves of Piper betel, Eucalyptus oil, Turpentine
oil and in a base of mustard oil in novel composition and process.
Another important objective is to invent the steps and processes as methods of
preparation of formulation to perform improvement of activity due to synergistic.
Yet another objective is to invent novel composition with novel inventive steps.
Another objective is to prepare aromatic liniment/oil (Birsol).
Still another objective is to select the ingredients have no irritation in skin and useful for
skin ailments in topical application.
Yet another objective is to take maximum advantage of ingredients selected for
formulation through novel process.
Summary of Invention
The invention relates to novel processes to formulate herbal based liniment/oil
(Birsol) for topical application. The synergistic properties comprises with powder of
rhizome and roots of Lygodium flexuosum, powders of root bark and leaves of Calotropis
spp., seeds of Datura spp., leaves of Piper betel, Eucalyptus oil, Turpentine oil of Pinus

leaves of Calotropis spp., seeds of Datura spp., leaves of Piper betel, Eucalyptus oil and
Turpentine oil.
In an embodiment of the present invention a base of mustard oil are present in the
formulation of liniment/oil (Birsol) and percentage of processed coarsely powders of
rhizome and roots of Lygodium flexuosum (10- 16%), roots bark (11-15%) and leaves of
Calotropis spp. (5%), seeds of Datura metel. (9-12%) and leaves of Piper betel (15-
20%).
In another embodiment the ratio of Turpentine oil and Eucalyptus oil is 6:4 (v/v) in
addition to above processed ingredients while powder of root barks of 'Ratnjot'(Araebia
spp.) less than 0.5% (w/v) used in the formulation as herbal colorant.
Yet, another embodiment, the presence of 50-68% herbal ingredient in powder form of
leaves, seeds, roots and rhizome which used in process in mustard oil base.
In another embodiment, the reference as cited in background of the Invention with
regard to prior art shows that the selected ingredients like rhizome and roots of Lygodium
flexuosum, roots bark and leaves of Calotropis spp., seeds of Datura metel, leaves of
Piper betel, mustard oil, Eucalyptus oil and Turpentine oil are useful for skin and their
ailments also.
Yet, in another embodiment, the formulation (Birsol) is only for topical application and
not any application in open wound, eyes, nose and ear etc. and strictly not for oral taking
or any internal use
