Abstract: A process for reducing excess concentration of hexavalent chromium in water comprising; (a) boiling fresh coconut coir in water to form coconut coir solution/extract; (b) filtering it to remove solid particles and coir therefrom: (c) adding water to the filtered solution/extract to compensate for loss in volume; (d) mixing the water with the filtered solution/extract; (e) storing the mixture of filtered solution/extract and water; (f) adding the said mixture to water contaminated with hexavalent chromium and allowing it to stand for 4 hours at room temperature, so that the concentration of chromium in the water is reduced.
