Abstract: The present disclosure discloses a process for digesting potato starch-containing substrate that includes contacting a potato starch containing substrate with water to obtain a first mixture. The first mixture is then allowed to at least one round of settling under gravity for a time period in a range of 15-120 minutes per round for the purpose of separating out supernatant from a portion of solid starch. The leftover starch in supernatant is further treated with a strain of Bacillus cereus. The bacterial treatment of potato starch further allows growth of microbial consortia that facilitates the complete digestion of the starch when incubated for a time period in a range of 10-48 hours.
I/We Claim:
1. A process for digesting potato starch-containing substrate, said process comprising:
a) contacting a potato starch containing substrate with water to obtain a first mixture;
b) allowing the first mixture to at least one round of settling under gravity for a time period in a range of 15-120 minutes per round, to separate out supernatant from a portion of solid starch;
c) processing the supernatant to obtain a processed supernatant;
d) contacting the processed supernatant with a strain of Bacillus cereus to obtain a second mixture; and
e) incubating the second mixture for a time period in a range of 10-48 hours, for digesting potato starch containing substrate.
2. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first mixture is obtained at a temperature in a range of 55-6.Ê,
3. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one round of settling under gravity is done in at least one settling tank, to separate out supernatant.
4. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the strain of Bacillus cereus is ATCC 14579.
5. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second mixture is incubated at a pH in a range of 7.0 to 7.4.
6. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the potato starch containing the substrate is contacted with water at a temperature in a range of 55-6.Ê for a time period in a range of 10-26 hours to obtain the first mixture having gelatinized potato starch, and with complete digestion of the starch in the substrate.
7. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the potato starch containing the substrate is contacted with water for a time period in a range of 36-48 hours to obtain the first mixture having non-gelatinized potato starch, and with complete digestion of the starch in the substrate.
8. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second mixture is incubated at a temperature in a range of 25-1.Ê,
9. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the substrate is an industry effluent.
10. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second mixture is incubated at a stirring speed in a range of 300-500 rpm.
