A Process Of Reduction Of Odour In Oils Or Fats

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process of reduction of odour in oils or fats comprising the steps of (a)treating said oil or fat with phosphoric acid;(b)air sparging and stirring the reaction at step (a) at temperatures between 50ºC to 100ºC for a period of 1-6 hours;(c)separating the phosphatides persent in said oil or fat after the air-sparged oil settles;and (d)treating the refined oil with an oxidizing agent, preferably hydrogen peroxide.

AND FATS”

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION DESCRIBES THE INVENTION: -

This invention relates to a process of odour reduction in industrial vegetable oils and fats.
Vegetable oils and fats are the basic raw materials used for the manufacture of fatty acids. Fatty acids in turn are used in personal care products like soaps, shampoo, detergents and creams. Hence they need to be free from odoriferous bodies.
The current invention discloses a multi-step combination process to deodorize industrial vegetable oils and fats so as to result in deodorized fatty acids.
Accordingly, the present invention envisages a process of odour reduction in oils and fats comprising the following steps:
a. Treating the vegetable oil or fat with an acid, preferably Phosphoric or
Citric Acid.
b. Maintaining strong agitation, using stirring & air sparging at an elevated
temperature for a fixed time period.
c. Settling the well agitated oil, while maintaining the elevated temperature.
d. Separating the settled gums.
2

f. Treating the oil, prepared by using the aforesaid steps, with an oxidizing agent, preferably hydrogen peroxide, while continuing to agitate and air spargea the oil at an elevated temperature for a fixed period of time.
The degree of odour reduction is evaluated by an odour panel, following an olfactory method of testing. Once approved, the oil is now ready for further routine and well documented processes leading to fatty acids, namely splitting, hydrogenation & distillation.
The almost odour free oil is indicative of a well deodorized raw material, capable of being processed into an odourless fatty acid.
