Abstract: ABSTRACT A battery assembly includes a battery and a battery shell. The battery is adapted to provide inside the battery shell. The battery shell is provided with a plurality of front brackets, a plurality of rear brackets, a plurality of side brackets and a tray assembly. The front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are adapted to provide a plurality of first, second and third mounting points, respectively. The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:-
TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The embodiments herein relate to battery casing, and more particularly to a protective shell for carrying high voltage battery assembly in vehicles.
BACKGROUND
[002] With the evolution of hybrid and electric vehicles, one of the most important aspect on which research and development is being carried out is the location and positioning of batteries. Location and positioning of batteries may affect the passenger space in the vehicle. For example, in some hybrid vehicles, the battery is provided usually in the third row in the passenger compartment thus compromising the third row seating. Further, constraints such as forced cooling of a high voltage battery assembly, which requires openings at both sides for a battery for heating ventilating and air conditioning, herein after referred as HVAC, duct fitments have to be considered. Scenarios such as theft and impact or crash should also be considered while positioning a battery.
[003] Hence there is a need for a battery assembly that can eliminate the above mentioned drawbacks.
OBJECTS
[004] The principal object of embodiments of this invention is to provide a battery assembly that protects the battery from water or dust ingress.
[005] Another object of the embodiments of this invention is to provide a battery assembly that avoids theft of the battery.
[006] A further object of the embodiments of this invention is to provide a battery assembly that withstands crash.
[007] These and other objects of the embodiments herein will be better appreciated and understood when considered in conjunction with the following description and the accompanying drawings. It should be understood, however, that the following descriptions, while indicating embodiments and numerous specific details thereof, are given by way of illustration and not of limitation. Many changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the embodiments herein without departing from the spirit thereof, and the embodiments herein include all such modifications.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0017] The embodiments herein and the various features and advantageous details thereof are explained more fully with reference to the non-limiting embodiments that are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and detailed in the following description. Descriptions of well-known components and processing techniques are omitted so as to not unnecessarily obscure the embodiments herein. The examples used herein are intended merely to facilitate an understanding of ways in which the embodiments herein may be practiced and to further enable those of skill in the art to practice the embodiments herein. Accordingly, the examples should not be construed as limiting the scope of the embodiments herein.
[0018] The embodiments herein achieve a battery assembly that effectively protects the battery from water or dust ingress. Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 through 7, where similar reference characters denote corresponding features consistently throughout the figures, there are shown preferred embodiments.

[0020] Now, referring to Figs. 1 and 3, in an embodiment, the battery assembly 100 includes a battery 102 and a battery shell 104. In an embodiment the battery 102 is provided inside the battery shell 104. In an embodiment the battery 102 is a high voltage hybrid battery. In an embodiment the battery shell 104 is made of sheet metal.
[0021] In an embodiment the battery shell 104 includes a plurality of front brackets 104a, a plurality of rear brackets 104b, a plurality of side brackets 104c and a tray assembly 104d. In an embodiment the front brackets 104a, the rear brackets 104b and the side brackets 104c are provided with mounting points. In an embodiment the front brackets 104a are connected with a centre floor (not shown) of the vehicle 200 with a means of M10 nuts. In an embodiment the rear brackets 104b are connected with rear cross member (not shown) of the vehicle 200 with a means of M10 nuts. In an embodiment the side brackets 104c are connected with side long member (not shown) of the vehicle 200 with a means of M10 bolts. However, it is also within the scope of the invention to provide screw or rivet as mounting means without otherwise deterring the intended function of the battery assembly 100 as can be deduced from this description. In an embodiment the front brackets 104a, the rear brackets 104b and the side brackets 104c are attached with the tray assembly 104d.

[0023] Now, referring to Figs. 4 and 5b, in an embodiment, the front brackets 104a are provided with a plurality of first mounting points M1. In an embodiment the rear brackets 104b are provided with a plurality of second mounting points M2. In an embodiment the side brackets 104c are provided with a plurality of third mounting points M3. In an embodiment a plurality fourth mounting points M4 are provided inside the battery shell 104 in order to prevent the theft. In an embodiment the fourth mounting points M4 is connected with the centre floor front of the vehicle 200 from inside with a means of M8 nuts. However, it is also within the scope of the invention to provide screw or rivet as mounting means without otherwise deterring the intended function of the battery assembly 100 as can be deduced from this description.
In an embodiment the first mounting points M1 are connected with the centre floor of the vehicle 200. In an embodiment the second mounting points M2 are connected with rear cross member of the vehicle 200. In an embodiment the third mounting points M3 are connected with the side long member of the vehicle 200.
[0024] FIG. 6 depicts a seal provided in the battery assembly, according to an embodiment as disclosed herein. In an embodiment, the battery assembly 100 includes an ethylene propylene diene monomer, herein after referred as EPMD, sealing 106. The EPMD sealing 106 is provided between the battery shell 104 and the center floor 202 of the vehicle 200. The EPDM sealing is provided to protect the battery assembly 100 from the water and dust ingression.
[0025] FIG. 7 depicts a bolt-able sheet metal cover and a sealing foam, according to an embodiment as disclosed herein. In an embodiment the battery assembly 100 includes a bolt-able sheet metal cover 108 and a sealing foam 110. The bolt-able sheet metal cover 108 provides access to disconnect the battery service from a passenger compartment of the vehicle 200. The sealing foam 110 is provided between the bracket service disconnector (not shown) and the central floor of the vehicle, and can access from the passenger compartment.
[0026] In an embodiment the deformation of the battery assembly 100 is simulated and the acceleration values are noted using computer-aided engineering, herein after referred as CAE, in LS DYNA software.
[0027] The advantages of the battery assembly 100 are as follows. The battery shell 104 acts as a protective cage to high voltage hybrid battery 102. The primary protection against water/dust is provided by detachable sheet metal battery shell 104. The battery assembly 100 provides crashworthiness. The battery assembly 100 can be easily installed since the assembly can be fitted the vehicle underbody from the bottom side. The battery shell 104 can provide protection to the battery 102, blower assembly (not shown) and other interface parts (not shown) of the vehicle 200. The battery assembly 100 provides protection from frontal, side and rear impacts. The battery assembly 100 provides theft protection since the battery assembly 100 cannot be removed completely from the bottom. The battery assembly 100 can sustain high deformation and high acceleration caused during high risk crashes.

CLAIMS
We claim,
1. A battery assembly for a vehicle, the battery assembly comprising:
a battery; and
a battery shell, the battery shell adapted to accommodate the battery, wherein the battery shell includes a plurality of front brackets, a plurality of rear brackets, a plurality of side brackets and a tray assembly; the front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are adapted to provide a plurality of first, second and third mounting points, respectively, wherein the first, second and third mounting points are adapted to connect the battery assembly with the vehicle.
2. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are attached to the tray assembly.
3. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the battery shell is provided with a plurality of fourth mounting points to connect the battery shell with a front centre floor of the vehicle with a mounting means.
4. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an EPMD sealing provided between the battery shell and the center floor of the vehicle.
5. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a bolt-able sheet metal cover to provide access to disconnect the battery service from a passenger compartment of the vehicle.
6. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a sealing foam provided between the bracket service disconnector and the central floor of the vehicle.
7. A vehicle comprising:
a plurality of centre floor;
a plurality of rear cross members;
a plurality of side long members; and
a battery assembly comprising, a battery and a battery shell; the battery is adapted to provide inside the battery shell; the battery shell includes a plurality of front brackets, a plurality of rear brackets, a plurality of side brackets and a tray assembly; the front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are adapted to provide a plurality of mounting points,
wherein
the first mounting points are connected to the corresponding centre floor and the second mounting points are connected to the corresponding rear cross members and the third mounting points are connected to the corresponding side long members.

2. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are attached to the tray assembly.
3. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the battery shell is provided with a plurality of fourth mounting points to connect the battery shell with a front centre floor of the vehicle with a mounting means.
4. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an EPMD sealing provided between the battery shell and the center floor of the vehicle.
5. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a bolt-able sheet metal cover to provide access to disconnect the battery service from a passenger compartment of the vehicle.
6. The battery assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a sealing foam provided between the bracket service disconnector and the central floor of the vehicle.
7. A vehicle comprising:
a plurality of centre floor;
a plurality of rear cross members;
a plurality of side long members; and
a battery assembly comprising, a battery and a battery shell; the battery is adapted to provide inside the battery shell; the battery shell includes a plurality of front brackets, a plurality of rear brackets, a plurality of side brackets and a tray assembly; the front brackets, the rear brackets and the side brackets are adapted to provide a plurality of mounting points,
wherein
the first mounting points are connected to the corresponding centre floor and the second mounting points are connected to the corresponding rear cross members and the third mounting points are connected to the corresponding side long members.
