Abstract: Providing enhanced subtitles for an audio and/or video segment. The principal object of this invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to understand the meaning of a word/phrase used in the subtitles. Another object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles. A further object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles and share the modified subtitles over a social network. CLIAMS:We claim:
1. A method for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of
enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle by the media player; and
storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location by the media player.
2. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein editing the subtitles may be at least one an addition to the subtitles; and a modification to the subtitles.
3. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the method further comprises of the user selecting a portion of the subtitles displayed, before entering text.
4. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the media player and the user interact using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
5. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pre-determined location may be at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
6. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media.
7. The method, as claimed in claim 6, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media from the pre-determined location.
8. The method, as claimed in claim 6, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media in real time.
9. A method for enabling a user to view a clarification related to a subtitle in a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of
displaying a menu to the user by the media player, on the user pausing the media; and
displaying the clarification to the user by the media player, on the user selecting an option from the menu presented to the user by the media player.
10. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the user selecting at least a portion of the subtitle displayed on the screen, after pausing the media.
11. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the media player displaying a clarification for the entire subtitle displayed on the screen.
12. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the media player fetching the clarification from at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
13. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the media player and the user interact using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
14. A media player configured for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on the media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the media player configured for
enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle; and
storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location.
15. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein editing the subtitles may be at least one an addition to the subtitles; and a modification to the subtitles.
16. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is further configured to enable the user to select the media before entering text.
17. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is configured to interact with the user using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
18. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the pre-determined location may be at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
19. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is further configured to make the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media.
20. The media player, as claimed in claim 19, wherein the media player is further configured for making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media from the pre-determined location.
21. The media player, as claimed in claim 19, wherein the media player is further configured for making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media in real time.
22. A media player configured for enabling a user to view a clarification related to a subtitle in a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the media player configured for
displaying a menu to the user, on the user pausing the media; and
displaying the clarification to the user, on the user selecting an option from the menu presented to the user by the media player.
23. The media player, as claimed in claim 22, wherein the media player is further configured for enabling the user to select at least a portion of the subtitle displayed on the screen, after pausing the media.
24. The media player, as claimed in claim 22, wherein the media player is further configured for displaying a clarification for the entire subtitle displayed on the screen.

The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:-
FIELD OF INVENTION
[001] This invention relates to improving the user experience when viewing subtitles and more particularly to improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to understand the meaning of a word/phrase used in the subtitles, modifying the subtitles and sharing the modified subtitles over a social network.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
[002] Currently, a lot of video content (such as films, television serials, documentaries, music videos or any other content that includes a visual component along with an audio component) comprise of subtitles/captioning, wherein the subtitles accompany the video and provide a transcript of the audio being played currently. The subtitles may be hardcoded into the content or present in a separate file (which may be present on the device playing the content or at a remote location such as the internet) and may be enabled/disabled by the user. The subtitles may be present in multiple languages and the user may select a subtitle of a suitable language.
[003] However, these subtitles are written by a person other than the user and do not consider the lingual ability of the user. There may be cases where the user may not be able to understand the subtitles being displayed. He has no easy method available which will enable him to understand the subtitles. If a user wants to know the meaning of a certain phrase or word in the subtitles, the user has to remember the word/phrase, open the internet browser, type in the word/phrase, go thru the search results, extract the correct meaning of the word/phrase in the current context and only then can he/she understand the meaning. The user may also have to keep a dictionary/thesaurus with him to understand the subtitle.
OBJECT OF INVENTION
[004] The principal object of this invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to understand the meaning of a word/phrase used in the subtitles.
[005] Another object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles.
[006] A further object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles and share the modified subtitles over a social network.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
[007] Accordingly the invention provides a method for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle by the media player; and storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location by the media player.
[008] Provided herein is a method for enabling a user to view a clarification related to a subtitle in a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of displaying a menu to the user by the media player, on the user pausing the media; and displaying the clarification to the user by the media player, on the user selecting an option from the menu presented to the user by the media player.
[009] Provided herein is a media player configured for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on the media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the media player configured for enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle; and storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
[0019] The embodiments herein and the various features and advantageous details thereof are explained more fully with reference to the non-limiting embodiments that are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and detailed in the following description. Descriptions of well-known components and processing techniques are omitted so as to not unnecessarily obscure the embodiments herein. The examples used herein are intended merely to facilitate an understanding of ways in which the embodiments herein may be practiced and to further enable those of skill in the art to practice the embodiments herein. Accordingly, the examples should not be construed as limiting the scope of the embodiments herein.
[0020] The embodiments herein achieve a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to understand the meaning of a word/phrase used in the subtitles, modifying the subtitles and sharing the modified subtitles over a social network. Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 through 6, where similar reference characters denote corresponding features consistently throughout the figures, there are shown preferred embodiments.
[0021] FIG. 1 depicts a system for enabling a user to view media from a media player on a display device, according to embodiments as disclosed herein. FIG. 1 depicts a media player 101 connected to a display device 103. The media player 101 may be connected to the internet. The media player 101 may be connected to a network, such as a Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and so on. The media player 101 may be connected to the cloud. The media player 101 may be a device capable of playing media, wherein the media may be present on a memory storage means (such as a DVD (Digital Versatile Disc), a Blu-Ray disc, a hard disc, a flash drive and so on) connected to the media player 101. The media player 101 may also play media present remotely, such as on the internet, the cloud, the network and so on. The media may be a television feed coming from a satellite receiver, antenna, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and so on. The media player 101 may display subtitles associated with a media, wherein the subtitles may be present along with the media file. The subtitles may also be located in a separate file, which may be co-located with the media or at a location separate from where the media is stored. The subtitles structure comprises of at least two regions. One of the regions may comprise of the standard subtitles and at least one of the other regions may comprise of an editable subtitle. The subtitles may be edited by at least one of the creator of the media, a user 102 of the media player 101 and so on. Examples of such media are media stored in a Blu-Ray format and so on. In an embodiment herein, the media player 101 may be a stand-alone device. In an embodiment herein, the media player 101 may be integrated with the display device 103.
[0022] A user 102 may view the media on the display device 103. The user 102 may use at least one remote control to interact with the media player 101 and the display device 103. The remote control may comprise of a keyboard, which will enable the user 102 to enter text.
[0023] FIG. 2 depicts the media player, according to embodiments as disclosed herein. The media player 101, as depicted, comprises of a controller 201, a content reader 202, a memory 203, a display interface 204 and a communication interface 205. The media player 101 may also comprise of a means to interface with the remote control, such as an infrared sensor. The content reader 202 may be a means to read a media that has been inserted/connected to the media player 101. The content reader 202 may comprise an optical disc reader configured to read DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and so on. The content reader 202 may also comprise a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface, which will enable the media player to access media present in a memory connected to the media player 101 through the USB. The display interface 204 enables the media player to interface with a display device such as a television, computer monitor, projector and so on. The communication interface 205 enables the media player 101 to connect to the internet, cloud or a network. The communication interface 205 may be used to upload data to a remote location such as the cloud. The communication interface 205 may be used to fetch media from a remote location such as the internet, the cloud or the network. The communication interface 205 may be used to fetch subtitles and/or enhanced subtitles from a remote location such as the internet, the cloud or the network.
[0024] The controller 201, on accessing a media, checks if subtitles are associated with the media. The media may be accessed using at least one of the communication interface 204 or via the content reader 202. If the subtitles are available, the controller 201 makes the media and the corresponding subtitles visible to the user, through the display interface 204 and the display device 103. The controller 201 may check with the user 102, if the user 102 wants to view the subtitles, the language of preference to view the subtitles and so on.
[0025] The user 102, when viewing the media, may detect a word/phrase (wherein the phrase may comprise of the entire portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103 or a portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103), in the subtitles of which he requires a clarification. The clarification may be in terms of viewing a simpler version of the word/phrase. The clarification may be in terms of viewing the meaning of the word/phrase. The clarification may be in terms of viewing synonym(s) of the word/phrase. The user 102 may pause the media and select the word/phrase on the display device 103 using the remote control.
[0026] The controller 201 may also enable the user 102 to add/modify the existing subtitles. The addition may be a simpler version of a word/phrase from the subtitles. The addition may be a meaning of the word/phrase. The addition may be synonym(s) of the word/phrase. The addition may be for a word/phrase (wherein the phrase may comprise of the entire portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103 or a portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103). The user 102 may pause the media and select the word/phrase on the display device 103 using the remote control.
[0027] The controller 201, on detecting that the user 102 has selected the word/phrase or paused the media, may provide a menu to the user 102, wherein the user 102 may opt for a suitable option from the menu. If the user 102 has not selected any word/phrase, the controller 201 may assume that the user 102 requires clarification on the entire subtitle being currently displayed on the screen. The option may comprise of display the meaning of the word/phrase, display a synonym of the word/phrase, display a simpler version of the word/phrase, modifying the subtitle, adding a clarification on the subtitle and so on. The controller 201 may offer the menu to the user 102 based on the availability of the options. If a simpler version of the word/phrase is not present, the controller 201 may not display the corresponding option to the user 102. The controller 201 may also offer the option for fetching information related to the word/phrase from a remote location. The controller 201 may also offer the option for fetching the information related to the word/phrase from a social network location, accessible to the user 102. The controller 201 may require the user 102 to authenticate himself, before accessing the social network.
[0028] On the user 102 selecting at least one option, the controller 201 displays the clarification to the user 102, depending on the at least one option selected by the user 102. The controller 201 may further present an option to continue the media, along with displaying the clarification.

The user 102 may also select an option from the menu displayed on the display device 103. The controller 201 may store the addition/modification in at least one suitable pre-determined location. The suitable pre-determined location may be the location where the media is stored, such as Blu-ray disc, the cloud, the internet and so on. The suitable pre-determined location may be a location on the internet, such as an account associated with a social network of the user 102. At least one other authorized user may access the stored subtitles, on receiving the requisite permissions from the user 102.
[0032] FIG. 3 depicts a Dialogue Presentation Segment (DPS) in a HDMV text file which may be associated with a Blu-Ray disc, according to embodiments as disclosed herein. The figure depicts a DPS in a HDMV text file in a Blu-ray disc. The DPS comprises of a presentation info field 301 and a dialog text field 302. The dialog text field 302 comprises of a plurality of subtitle regions 303a, 303b and so on. The first subtitle region 303a may comprise of the normal subtitles that accompany the media. The second subtitle region 303b may comprise of the clarification, which may be editable. These subtitles may be enclosed within a new sub-play-item sub_path_id in the second subtitle region 303b. There may at least one other subtitle region, which may be edited by the user to make any additions/modifications to the subtitles.
[0033] The DPS in a HDMV text file in a Blu-ray disc merely serves as an example and does not restrict the embodiments as disclosed herein in any manner. Embodiments as disclosed herein may be applied to any media that is associated with media comprising of a subtitles structure which comprises of at least two subtitle regions.
[0034] FIG. 4 is a flowchart illustrating the process of a creator of a media editing a subtitle, according to embodiments as disclosed herein. On the creator (wherein the creator may be the person/entity owning the media, the person/entity preparing the media for distribution using a suitable distribution means) editing (401) a subtitle of a media (wherein the edit may be in the form of a simpler version of a word/phrase in the subtitle, the meaning of a word/phrase in the subtitle, synonym(s) of a word/phrase in the subtitles, a simpler version of the subtitle being currently displayed, the meaning of the subtitle being currently displayed, synonym(s) of the subtitle being currently displayed), the edited subtitles are added (402) to the subtitle file in the appropriate format. For example, if the media is present on a Blu-ray disc, the edited subtitles may be stored in the DPS in the subtitle region 2 (as depicted in FIG. 3). The various actions in method 400 may be performed in the order presented, in a different order or simultaneously. Further, in some embodiments, some actions listed in FIG. 4 may be omitted.
[0035] FIG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating the process of a creator of a user viewing a clarification on a word/phrase in a subtitle, according to embodiments as disclosed herein. The user 102, when viewing the media, detects (501) a word/phrase (wherein the phrase may comprise of the entire portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103 or a portion of the subtitle being currently displayed on the display device 103), in the subtitles of which he requires a clarification. The clarification may be in terms of viewing a simpler version of the word/phrase. The clarification may be in terms of viewing the meaning of the word/phrase. The clarification may be in terms of viewing synonym(s) of the word/phrase. The user 102 may pause the media and select the word/phrase on the display device 103 using the remote control. The media player 101, on detecting that the user 102 has selected the word/phrase, selected a pre-configured key(s) from the remote control or paused the media, provides (502) a menu to the user 102, wherein the user 102 may opt for a suitable option from the menu. On the user 102 selecting (503) at least one option, the media player 101 displays (504) the clarification to the user 102, depending on the at least one option selected by the user 102. The various actions in method 500 may be performed in the order presented, in a different order or simultaneously. Further, in some embodiments, some actions listed in FIG. 5 may be omitted.

The user 102 presses (602) a button on the remote control and the media player 101 on receiving (603) this input from the user 102 enables (604) the user 102 to add/modify the subtitles. The media player 101 may display a keyboard to the user 102 using the display device 103. The keyboard may cover the whole display of the display device 103. The keyboard may cover a portion of the display of the display device 103. The user 102 may navigate the keyboard using at least one key on the remote control. The remote control may also comprise of a keyboard, which enables the user 102 to enter text using the keyboard on the remote control. The display may comprise of a portion which will enable the user 102 to view the text as he enters it. On completing the addition/modification, the user 102 gives (605) an indication, wherein the indication may be the user pressing at least one key on the remote control or selecting an option from the keyboard displayed on the display device 103. The user 102 may also select an option from the menu displayed on the display device 103. The media player 101 stores (606) the addition/modification in at least one suitable pre-determined location. The suitable pre-determined location may be the memory 203. The suitable pre-determined location may be the location where the media is stored, such as Blu-ray disc, the cloud, the internet and so on. The suitable pre-determined location may be a location on the internet, such as an account associated with a social network of the user 102. The various actions in method 600 may be performed in the order presented, in a different order or simultaneously. Further, in some embodiments, some actions listed in FIG. 6 may be omitted.

Therefore, it is understood that the scope of the protection is extended to such a program and in addition to a computer readable means having a message therein, such computer readable storage means contain program code means for implementation of one or more steps of the method, when the program runs on a server or mobile device or any suitable programmable device. The method is implemented in a preferred embodiment through or together with a software program written in e.g. Very high speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) another programming language, or implemented by one or more VHDL or several software modules being executed on at least one hardware device. The hardware device can be any kind of portable device that can be programmed. The device may also include means which could be e.g. hardware means like e.g. an ASIC, or a combination of hardware and software means, e.g. an ASIC and an FPGA, or at least one microprocessor and at least one memory with software modules located therein. The method embodiments described herein could be implemented partly in hardware and partly in software. Alternatively, the invention may be implemented on different hardware devices, e.g. using a plurality of CPUs.

STATEMENT OF CLAIMS
We claim:
1. A method for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of
enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle by the media player; and
storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location by the media player.
2. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein editing the subtitles may be at least one an addition to the subtitles; and a modification to the subtitles.
3. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the method further comprises of the user selecting a portion of the subtitles displayed, before entering text.
4. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the media player and the user interact using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
5. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pre-determined location may be at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
6. The method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media.
7. The method, as claimed in claim 6, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media from the pre-determined location.
8. The method, as claimed in claim 6, wherein the method further comprises of making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media in real time.
9. A method for enabling a user to view a clarification related to a subtitle in a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the method comprising of
displaying a menu to the user by the media player, on the user pausing the media; and
displaying the clarification to the user by the media player, on the user selecting an option from the menu presented to the user by the media player.
10. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the user selecting at least a portion of the subtitle displayed on the screen, after pausing the media.
11. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the media player displaying a clarification for the entire subtitle displayed on the screen.
12. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the method further comprises of the media player fetching the clarification from at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
13. The method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein the media player and the user interact using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
14. A media player configured for enabling a user to edit subtitles associated with a media being played on the media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the media player configured for
enabling the user to enter text associated with a subtitle; and
storing the entered text in at least one pre-determined location.
15. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein editing the subtitles may be at least one an addition to the subtitles; and a modification to the subtitles.
16. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is further configured to enable the user to select the media before entering text.
17. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is configured to interact with the user using at least one of a remote control; and a display device.
18. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the pre-determined location may be at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.
19. The media player, as claimed in claim 14, wherein the media player is further configured to make the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media.
20. The media player, as claimed in claim 19, wherein the media player is further configured for making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media from the pre-determined location.
21. The media player, as claimed in claim 19, wherein the media player is further configured for making the entered text available to at least one other user watching the media in real time.
22. A media player configured for enabling a user to view a clarification related to a subtitle in a media being played on a media player, wherein the media comprises of at least two subtitle regions, the media player configured for
displaying a menu to the user, on the user pausing the media; and
displaying the clarification to the user, on the user selecting an option from the menu presented to the user by the media player.
23. The media player, as claimed in claim 22, wherein the media player is further configured for enabling the user to select at least a portion of the subtitle displayed on the screen, after pausing the media.
24. The media player, as claimed in claim 22, wherein the media player is further configured for displaying a clarification for the entire subtitle displayed on the screen.
25. The media player, as claimed in claim 22, wherein the media player is further configured for fetching the clarification from at least one of the same location where the media is stored; the internet; the cloud; and internal memory; and a social network.

ABSTRACT
Providing enhanced subtitles for an audio and/or video segment. The principal object of this invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to understand the meaning of a word/phrase used in the subtitles. Another object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles. A further object of the invention is to propose a method and system for improving the user experience when viewing subtitles by enabling the user to modify the subtitles and share the modified subtitles over a social network.
