Registration Process Of An Iot Device

Abstract: REGISTRATION PROCESS OF AN IOT DEVICE The present invention is a system and method for a registration process of an Internet of Things (IOT) device. There is a unique device Identity Document (ID) generation at registration which gives the advantage of not hard coding the ID. The unique device ID is generated from a combination of Media Access Control (MAC) and unique key to identify the vendor. The server registers the device and adds the user as admin3.After the device is sold to some other person as a secondhand device, the original admin adds the user as another admin to the device 4. The new admin removes the old admin from the device 5. If the device is stolen or if it is reset and registered on the server again 6, then the server returns with an error message7 and intimates the old admin of the device 8.

Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a registration process of an Internet of Things (IOT) device.
5 BACKGROUND
Data security of smart security solutions is required, so there needs to be a solution to refrain anyone to gain access to the device when the access is illegal. An intelligent security solution is powered by alternating current 230V 50Hz supply and is an audio-video and Wifi enabled, battery based device, which
10 allows two-way communications with the Smartphone, providing motion alert notifications. The device lets users to record video or audio data on the device. The security device stays powered ON all the time, so it is required to manage the power consumption of the device for energy efficient use. These devices along with software applications offer flexibility to a user to access their devices and
15 anytime.
In the present invention, there is a Unique Device Identity Document (ID) generated at the time of registration which gives the advantage of not hard coding the ID. The unique device ID is generated from a combination of Media Access Control (MAC) and unique key to identify the vendor. The ID is generated once 20 in a lifetime of the device. Also, admin is allocated for the first time while ID gets generated, which ensures that the device cannot be re-registered even if it is reset
to factory settings. Consequently, this makes it an antitheft device registration.
Smart connected devices usually are identified by an ID. The ID should be generated on the server side, when the device is registered or connected for the 25 first time, providing a vendor flexibility as not to hardcode the device with a different ID in the production line and sync it with their cloud infrastructure.
DISCUSSION OF THE PRIOR ART

KR20160082620titled “Device registration/services system and method with BLE” describes a method by which an Internet of Things (IoT) device is registered. For the process of the IoT service to take place the device must first be installed, and the IoT device registers on the server. Registering enables storage of 5 information on the internet and eventual control of the IoT device over the internet by any device. Due to the complexity of the installing process, the present invention uses a receiving beacon from the device that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon that enables simplified registration of the IoT device. The IoT device information is transferred to the BLE beacon. The user device receives 10 all the required device information that helps in the automatic process of registration. Another feature is the security that the BLE system offers the user.
US2016205078A1titled “Systems and methods for registering, managing, and communicating with IoT devices using domain name system processes”
describes a method that helps register devices with a Domain Name Registry 15 (DNS) registry. Registering is done by obtaining a DNS server, an identifier, IP (Internet Protocol) address, and a public key of a key pair that is asymmetric, that is in association with an Internet of Things (IoT) device from a gateway device on network in communication with the IoT device. The asymmetric key pair is provisioned onto the IoT device and associates with a private key stored in the 20 memory of the IoT device that enables the production of at least one DNS record for the IoT device.
US2016227371 A1 titled “Methods of joint registration and de-registration for proximity services and internet of things services” describes a method and system for combined proximity servers and the Internet of Things (IOT) services
25 registration and de-registration. The proximity communications can be identified with Machine to Machine (M2M) and IoT systems to enable functioning of maintaining smart environments and smart transportation. The information about a proximity device withholds an IoT service registration request. This communications network consists of a first server that registers devices for the
30 first service within the network and the second server registers the device for the

second service within the network. The entire server system consists of a processor and a memory and includes a computer-executable instruction stored in the memory that finally leads to the registration of the device via the server.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
5 Each device is coded with a key to identify itself in the network (like MAC address) and an ID to identify the vendor (manufacturer). When the device connects to a server for the first time by a user (device owner), a unique device ID is generated using the combination of keys. The user who connects to the device at that time is made the admin of the device. Since the device ID uniquely
10 identifies the device on the server, so the access permissions can only be changed by the device admin. The second time when the device is connected, the ID is used to identify the device. When the device resets to factory settings (that is the removal of the ID), it is impossible for a device to get a new ID, as it is a combination of MAC and vendor key on the server. Thus, the process makes the
15 registration as an antitheft registration. The device transfer can only be done with the consent of the device owner (admin). The admin can add the desired user as an admin and thus remove himself from the device. When a device needs to be transferred to a new user, he is to be added as admin of the device, and then new user can remove the old user and configure the device on his name.
20 There are different business models for the process to work like one-time sell mode, rental model, resell model. A user buying the second-hand device should be made aware of the admin access to help him keep their data secure.
A registration system for an Internet of Things (IOT) device comprising, a new device, a seller, a buyer, another party, a server, an Identity Document and, an 25 admin. One or more new devices are bought and paired with the server by registering the device with the Identity Document (ID). Each device is coded with a key to identify itself in network (like Media Access Control (MAC) address) and an ID to identify a vendor such that when the device connects to the server for the first time by the device owner, a unique device ID is generated using a

combination of these keys. An old admin adds the person who uses the device as the new admin of the device during a transfer of ownership. In the case of device theft, if the ID is reset and registered on the server again, the server returns an error message and intimates the old admin of the device.
5 A method for registration of an Internet of Things (IOT) device having, a new device, a seller, a buyer, another party, a server, an Identity Document and, an admin, comprising the steps of, starting the process with registering the new device, when no device on the server is identified by the hardcoded Identity Document (ID), registering the device by the server and adding the user as admin, 10 selling the device to some other person as a second-hand device and adding the user as another admin to device by the original admin, removing of the old admin by the new admin of the device, and returning an error message and intimating the old admin, in the case of theft of the device or in the case of resetting the device and re-registering it on server and the process is over.
15 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 illustrates the process of the invention. Figure 2 illustrates the system diagram of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows the flow of the invention. The process starts 1 with registering a 20 new device when no device on a server is identified by the hardcoded Identity Document (ID) 2. The server registers the device and adds the user as admin3.After the device is sold to some other person as a second-hand device, the original admin adds the user as another admin to device 4. The new admin removes the old admin from the device5. If the device is stolen or if it is reset and 25 registered on the server again 6, then the server returns an error message7 and intimates the old admin of the device8. If the device is not stolen or not reset and registered on the server again 6, then the process gets over 9.

Figure 2 shows the system diagram of the invention. A new device is bought 10 and is paired 11 with a server 14 by registering the device with an Identity Document (ID) 15. Then, the old admin adds the person who buys the device as a new admin 16 of the device. The device when sold to another person 12, the new 5 admin removes the old admin 17. In the case of device theft 13, if ID is reset and registered on the server again 18, the server returns an error message and intimates the old admin of the device.
