it is to be performed.
REPOSITIONING DEVICE
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention in general relates to a system and apparatus for repositioning an object and in particular relates to a system and apparatus for repositioning a gemstone on a profile mapping apparatus.
BACKGROUND
Typically, a raw gemstone i.e. the gemstone as found in its natural state, has a highly irregular geometry and possesses many inclusions. A series of steps are involved in processing the raw gemstone to obtain a finished gemstone. Major steps involved in the processing are obtaining the 3D profile of the gemstone, selecting a best shape for the finished gemstone to be cut from the raw gemstone and finally cutting the raw gemstone into the selected shape. Selecting the best shape for the gemstone involves a high degree of analysis. Precise analysis enables to obtain a finished gemstone with maximum aesthetic and monetary value, but is a time consuming job.
Various computerized systems, are employed in processing the raw gemstone to obtain the finished gemstone. These systems are a bunch of hardware coupled to specialized software. The system carries out all the major steps involved in processing the raw gemstone. The gemstone is positioned on the system for the system to obtain the 3D profile of the gemstone, and provide to the user the best suited shapes for the finished gemstone. Once the user decides upon a final shape, the system proceeds further with the steps of putting laser marks on the gemstone, cutting and polishing it.
Usually, a considerable amount of time is spent by the user in analyzing the profile of the stone before deciding upon a final shape. The other steps involved in processing the gemstone need a relatively less amount of time. If the gemstone is continued to be positioned on the system while the user is performing analysis, machine time is consumed. If the gemstone can be removed from the system and the analysis for finalizing of a shape can be done at a remote station, the system becomes available for processing other gemstones. This increases the throughput of the system.
A major challenge faced while removing the gemstone from the system to carry out the finalizing step on a remote station is that gemstone needs to be repositioned in exactly the same position as it was placed on the system. Further steps involved in the processing can be carried out precisely only when the gemstone has been placed exactly in the same position as it was prior to removing it.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a means for repositioning a gemstone on a profile mapping apparatus.
Another object of the present invention is to increase the throughput of the profile mapping apparatus by allowing analysis of the gemstone profile to be done at a remote station.
Yet another object of the present invention is to allow the profile mapping apparatus to be networked so that the mapping and planning information related to a gemstone may be retrieved on any remote machine.
Various modifications of the disclosed objects, as well as alternate objects of the invention, will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as defined.
DESCRIPTION
When a gemstone is placed on a profile mapping apparatus, the apparatus first captures the image data of the gemstone. Image data of the gemstone generates a true 3D profile of the gemstone based on which a best suited shape for the finished stone can be finalized. The process of capturing the image data and generating the 3D profile typically takes a couple of minutes. Thereafter, a user uses these image data to analyze the profile of the gemstone. This analysis is a relatively slower process since it requires a lot of skill and precision. However, the analysis requires only the software, i.e. the captured image data and is independent of the hardware. Therefore, the gemstone can be removed from the apparatus and the analysis may be performed on any remote station where the image data has been made available. This allows the profile mapping apparatus to be unoccupied and be able to process other gemstones. After analyzing the profile, the gemstone needs to be placed back onto the apparatus at precisely the same position as the original. Thereafter, the software maps a plan for the gemstone and puts marking on the gemstone for the gemstone to be shaped based on this plan.
The subject matter described herein, is a system and apparatus for repositioning the gemstone at precisely the same position as the original.
Typically, profile mapping apparatus employ motorized homing device which when reset are positioned to an original reference point. However, these systems involve additional hardware and increase the bulk and cost of the apparatus.
Proposed herein is a method of repositioning the gemstone back to a reference position by recognizing a known marked feature.
The profile mapping apparatus typically has a means to turn the gemstone in a rotatory motion. The means is generally a turntable, rotating in small angles to allow various images of the gemstone to be captured at different angles by a stationary image capturing device. A stage is placed on the turntable. Fig. 1 depicts a turntable 100 with a stage 200 placed on the turntable 100. The stage 200 has a base 205 and a stem 210. The gemstone is mounted on the stem 210 of the stage 200 and is glued to it. Since the gemstone is glued to the stem 210, the position of the gemstone with respect to the stage 200 is stationary. To reposition the gemstone to its original position with respect to the image capturing device, only the turntable needs to be aligned to its original position with respect to the turntable 100.
In one embodiment of the subject matter disclosed herein, a through hole is drilled on the stem 210 in the portion visible to the image capturing device. The hole is drilled off centre to the axis of the stem 210. Due to the off centre nature of the hole, the image capturing device perceives a unique view of the hole for a particular position of the stage 200. One unique view of the hole is considered as a reference by the software residing in the apparatus. Preferably, the unique view considered as the reference is the view that reveals the maximum details about the hole i.e. the true shape of the hole. When the
gemstone needs to be removed from the apparatus, it is removed along with the stage 200. While repositioning the stage 200 on the turntable 100, the position at which the unique view is again detected by the image capturing device is treated as the reference position. Thus, the stage 200 is repositioned to its original position on the turntable 100.
In one example of the present embodiment, as illustrated in Fig. 2A, a rectangular hole is drilled in the step 210, off center to the axis of the stem 210. While capturing silhouette images of the gemstone, the rectangular hole 215 being a through hole appears as a streak of light in the image. At a particular angular position of the turntable with respect to the image capturing device, the streak of light is brightest. This particular position is regarded as the reference position by the software and used as a reference to realign the images to the original reference. The image frame capturing the reference position can be called the frame of reference.
In another example of the present embodiment, as illustrated in Fig. 2B, a circular hole 220 is drilled in the step 210, off center to the axis of the stem 210. These fine holes may be drilled using laser or other precision drilling techniques such as wire cutting techniques.
In another embodiment as shown in Fig. 3, a bump 300, aligned to the central axis of the stem 210 is made. The frame of reference in this case is the frame which reveals the first appearance of the bump 300 or the frame which reveals maximum projection of the bump 300.
In yet another embodiment of the subject matter disclosed herein, as depicted in Fig. 4, the stem 210 is cam shaped. The axis of the step 210 coincides with the axis of the stage 200. The shape of the step 210 being asymmetrical allows the software to capture a unique view and treat it as the frame of reference.
In yet another embodiment of the subject matter disclosed herein, the stem 210 is made off centre. The central axis of the stem 210 does not coincide with the axis of the base 205. The off centre nature of the step 210 allows the image capturing device to recognize a unique view as the reference view. While repositioning, the position at which the unique view is again detected is said to be the aligned position.
Although the subject matter has been described with reference to certain preferred embodiments thereof, other embodiments are possible. As such, the spirit and scope of the subject matter described herein should not be limited to the description of the embodiment contained herein.
