Detailed Description of the Invention:
Various objects, features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention, along with the accompanying drawings in which like numerals represent like components.
Referring to figure 1, the bench (1) of present invention includes a frame and frame includes seat portion (2), support portion (3) and back rest portion (4). The seat portion (2) rests on support portion (3). The support portion (3) includes at least two legs which are fixed at the opposite ends of the seat portion (2). The support portion (3) may includes more than two legs depending upon design of bench (1). The legs are fixed to the seat portion (2) at a predefined angle. Each leg is of "T" shape wherein the stem (8) of "T" is connected to seat portion (2) while base (9) of "T" is placed on ground. The seat portion (2) and back rest portion (4) are joined to each other in such a manner that they make an angle ranging from 90°-110° between them. The frame is made of metal and mainly used metal is cast iron. The frame is preferably powder coated to prevent the metal from rusting or corroding due to environmental factors such as rain and snow. The frame may also be constructed from other material. The frame is preferably made in single piece.
The strip (5) is fixed over the seat portion (2) and back rest portion (4). The seat portion (2) and back rest portion (4) may include only one strip or more than one strip depending upon dimensions of the strip. Figures 1 and 2 show bench (1) with three strips over the seat portion (2) and back rest portion (4) each. The strips (5) are fixed over the seat portion (2) and back rest portion (4) by means of bolts, screws, rivets, adhesives and the like.
The strip (5) is made of the composition containing resin material. The composition mainly includes following ingredients:
i. Isophthalic resin (20% by weight)
ii. Fillers (70 % by weight)
iii. Additives (2% by weight)
iv. Flexible textile reinforcing fiber (8 % by weight)
Now each ingredient is discussed in herein below in detail:
i. Isopthalic resin:
Isophthalic (iso) resins are higher grade resins in that the molecular structure is denser. It is a special raw material utilized in corrosion resistant and/or premium grade polyster resins. These resins exhibit a higher heat distortion temperature, higher strength, greater flexibility and are more waterproof. It is corrosion , temperature, solvent and fuel resistant. Due to these properties, Isopthalic resin is selected for manufacturing bench strips in the present invention. The main functions of this resin are to transfer stress between the reinforcing fibers, act as a glue to hold the fibers together, and protect the fibers from mechanical and environmental damage.
ii. Fillers:
Fillers are used to improve performance and reduce the cost of a composition and imparting benefits as shrinkage control, surface smoothness and crack resistance. Important properties, including water resistance, weathering, stiffness, dimensional stability and temperature stability are also improved through the use of fillers. The fillers used in the present invention are calcium carbonate, kaolin, alumina hydrate, calcium sulfate, mica and like.
iii. Additives:
A wide variety of additives are used in the composition to modify materials properties and tailor the laminate performance. Additives are used in relatively low quantity by weight compared to the resin, fillers and reinforcing fiber. Additives improves the properties of the strip like fire resistance, toughness etc. The additives used in the composition are catalysts, promoters and inhibitors.
iv. Flexible textile reinforcing fiber:
The primary function of reinforcing fiber is to carry load along the length of the fiber to provide strength and stiffness in one direction. Reinforcements can be oriented to provide tailored in the direction of the loads imparted on the end product. The reinforcing fiber used in the composition includes glass fibers, carbon fibers and aramid fibers.
The composition is preferably made by the pultrusion process. In this method the reinforcing fiber material is pulled through a Isopthalic resin impregnation bath and through a shaping die. The dimensions and shape of the die define the finished part being fabricated. Inside the metal die, heat is transferred initiated by precise temperature control to the reinforcements and liquid resin. The heat energy activates the curing or polymerization of the Isopthalic resin changing it from a liquid to a solid. The solid laminate emerges from the pultrusion die to the exact shape of the die cavity. The laminate solidifies when cooled and it is continuously pulled through the pultrusion machine and cut to the desired length.
The bench (1) may include at least two armrest. The armrests can be a part of frame or it can be separately mounted. The armrests can be fixed on the strips of the seat portion (2) and backrest portion (4) using bolts, screws, rivets and the like.
The benches of the present invention can be used in garden, or at a corridor, reception area in the office. This enhances the beauty of the place.
Advantages of the Resin bench:
i. It gives wood like finish to the benches and also adds aesthetic look to the
product. ii. It is rust free.
iii. It is light in weight and hence easy to move and transport. iv. It has high strength and hence suitable for sitting of many people. v. It is designed to inhibit the transfer of moisture and to prevent the surface
from being contaminated by dirt and stains and adding to the life of the
benches. vi. It is considerably less prone to scratches, dirt and wear.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited to what has been particularly shown and described herein above. The principle involved in present invention not limited only to the bench but it also relates to other indoor and outdoor furniture like chair, table and other furnitures. In addition, unless mention was made above to the contrary, it should be noted that all of the accompanying drawings are not to scale. A variety of modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teachings without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
