Retrofit Sensor System For Sensing A Weapon’s Operation

Abstract: The present invention relates to retrofitting of sensors to a firearm (101), which could be used for evaluating a trainee’s firearm handling skills. The retrofit sensor system (100) detects Holding, Aiming and Triggering (HAT) operations of the firearm. The retrofit sensor system (100) typically comprises a microcontroller card (128) installed on the side of the firearm (101). Predominantly, it comprises a plurality of non-contact sensors installed at the sensor aim point, butt assembly (114), the trigger (130), magazine (124), the cock pin (132), safety switch, laser sub assembly (120), and on the firearm itself to sense a PAN or a tilt position. It also comprises cant and pitch sensors to sense the firearm holding stability of the user while aiming the target. Figure associated with Abstract is Fig. 1

Technical Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a retrofit sensory system to a firearm used for training purposes. More particularly, the invention relates to retrofitted firearm enabled to sense Holding Aiming and Triggering (HAT) operations performed by a trainee.

Background of the Invention

Generally many devices have been anticipated to monitor the operations of the firearm like holding, magazine insertion, cocking, triggering, etc. It is very difficult to find the accurate information of the firearm actions performed by a trainee.

Therefore, there is need for retrofit system for a firearm used in trainings to enable it to sense its operation and use the data for analyzing a trainee’s performance.

Brief Summary of the Invention

According to an aspect of the present invention, a retrofit sensor system for sensing firearm actions is disclosed. The retrofit sensor system involves alteration of a firearm typically comprising of a main body assembly, a main barrel assembly, a breech block assembly, a hand guard upper assembly, a hand guard lower assembly, a spring guide assembly, a butt assembly, a butt locking assembly, a safety covers assembly, a laser mounting assembly, and a sensing assembly.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the magazine is connected to the upper receiver assembly and adapted to accept a magazine of cartridges, wherein, the lower receiver assembly and the magazine are removable and interlocking to the upper receiver assembly.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the magazine is selectable from a plurality of interchangeable magazines each having a different predetermined characteristic, and wherein, the lower receiver assembly and the magazine are removable from the upper receiver assembly without tools and without the removal of fasteners.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the retrofitting of sensors to the firearm comprises a microcontroller card, installed on the side of the firearm. The retrofit sensor system characterized to have installed one or more sensors to the butt assembly to read a butt pressure; to the trigger to read a trigger displacement; to the magazine to read a magazine presence; to the cocking pin to read the cocking of the firearm; to the safety switch to read a switch position; to the laser subassembly to detect a laser point; and to the body of the firearm to sense a PAN or a tilt position.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the sensors of the retrofit sensor system are electrified and configured to display results for immediate feedback, and to compute overall results of the finished exercises.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system typically monitors the ammo in magazines, the ready to fire status, the firearm safety status, its single or burst mode, and the butt pressure.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the firearm attached with the retrofit sensor system computes recoil of the firearm by a recoil assembly.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system consists of contact-less sensors with which the system monitors the triggering mechanism and provides complete firearm status.

In accordance with the aspect of the present invention, the interface module allows the trainee the freedom of movement. The retrofit sensor system achieves high accuracy in reading an aim point, and its position.

Brief Description of the Drawings

The embodiment set forth in the drawing is illustrative and exemplary in nature and not intended to limit the subject matter defined by the claims. The following detailed description of the illustrative embodiment can be understood when read in conjunction with the following drawing, where like structure is indicated with like reference numerals and in which:

Detailed Description of the Invention

Referring to Fig. 1, a retrofit sensor system (100) for sensing and analyzing usage patterns of a firearm (101) when used by a trainee are disclosed. The retrofit sensor system (100) involves alteration of the firearm typically comprising of a main body assembly (102), a main barrel assembly (104), a breech block assembly (106), a butt assembly (114), a safety covers assembly (118), a laser mounting assembly (120), and a sensing assembly.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a magazine (124) is connected to an upper receiver assembly (108) and adapted to accept a plurality of cartridges, wherein, a lower receiver assembly and the magazine (124) are removable and interlocking to the upper receiver assembly (108).

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the magazine (124) is selectable from a plurality of interchangeable magazines each having a different predetermined characteristic, and ,wherein, the lower receiver assembly and the magazine (124) are removable from the upper receiver assembly (108) without tools and without removing the fasteners.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the firearm (101) characterized to have installed with sensors that comprises a microcontroller card (128) installed on the breech block assembly (106) to the side of the firearm (101).

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the firearm (101) characterized to have installed with sensors inside and/or along with the said assembly at the butt assembly (114) to read a butt pressure; at the trigger (130) to read a trigger displacement; at the magazine (124) to read a magazine presence; at the cock pin (132) to read the cocking of the firearm; at the safety switch to read a switch position(112); at the laser sub assembly (120) to emit a laser point, and at the body of the firearm to sense a PAN or a tilt position.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system (100) comprises a sensor aim the point system consists of a firearm laser transmitter with an accurate laser beam profile and the retrofit sensor system is configured to display results for the trainer’s immediate feedback during exercise, and the overall results of the finished exercise.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system (100) monitors the ammo in magazines (124), the ready to fire status, the safety status, its single and/or its burst mode, and the butt pressure.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, retrofit sensor system (100) detects holding, aiming and triggering operation and configured to transfer the data to the external system for storing and analyzing.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system (100) comprises of contact-less sensors monitors the trigger mechanism and provides complete firearm status.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system (100) consists of wherein the firearms interface module allows the trainee the freedom of movement.

In accordance with the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the retrofit sensor system (100) achieves high accuracy in reading an aim point.

Having thus described exemplary embodiments, it should be noted by those skilled in the art that the within disclosures are exemplary only and that various other alternatives, adaptations, and modifications may be made within the scope of this disclosure as described herein and as described in the appended claims.

I/We Claim
1. A retrofit sensor system (100) for sensing and analyzing usage patterns of a firearm (101), wherein the retrofit sensor system and its sub units are fixed to the firearm comprising:
i. a main body assembly (102), a main barrel assembly (104), a breech block assembly (106), a hand guard upper assembly, a hand guard lower assembly, a butt assembly (114), a butt locking assembly, a safety covers assembly (118), a laser mounting assembly (120), and a sensing assembly;
ii. the magazine (124) is connected to an upper receiver assembly (108) and adapted to accept a magazine (124) of cartridges, wherein, the lower receiver assembly and the magazine (124) are removable and interlocking to the upper receiver assembly (108);
iii. the magazine (124) is selectable from a plurality of interchangeable magazines each having a different predetermined characteristic, and wherein, the lower receiver assembly and the magazine (124) are removable from the upper receiver assembly (108) without tools and without the removal of fasteners;
Characterized by
iv. the retrofit sensor system (100) comprises a microcontroller card (128) installed on the breech block assembly (106) to the side of the firearm;
v. a plurality of sensors installed inside and/or along:
a. the butt assembly (114) to read a butt pressure;
b. the trigger (130) to read a trigger displacement;
c. the magazine (124) to read a magazine presence;
d. the cock pin (132) to read the cocking of the firearm;
e. the safety switch to read a switch position (112);
f. the laser sub assembly (120) to detect a laser point;
g. the body of the firearm to sense a PAN or a tilt position (120);
vi. the sensors are electrified and wired to communicate the recitals to an external computing system (136) connected via a wired or wireless connection; and
vii. the retrofit sensor system is capitalized to display results for trainer’s immediate feedback during exercise, and overall results of the finished exercise.

2. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the sensor system monitors the ammo in magazines (124), the ready to fire status, the firearm safety status, its single or burst mode (112), and the butt pressure (114).

3. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the sensor system detects holding, aiming and triggering operation.

4. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the firearm (101) attached with the retrofit sensor system computes the recoil by the recoil assembly (140).

5. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the firearm (101) is also tacked to have a cant and pitch sensors to sense the firearm holding stability of the user while aiming the target (120).

6. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the contact-less sensors monitors the trigger mechanism and provides complete firearm status.

7. The retrofit sensor system (100) according to claim 1, wherein the system achieves high accuracy in reading an aim point, its position, and aiming by the firer.
