3. PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
PROVISIONALThe following specification describes the invention. COMPLETEThe following specification particularly describe –in the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

Title of invention: Rotary adjustable head restraint for Automobile Seat
Field of Invention: The present invention is related to the head restraint provided on the backrest of the seat in automobiles. More particularly the present invention is related to adjustable head restraints provided on the backrest of the seat in automobiles.
Prior art: Commonly found head restraints have no provision for adjusting their position. Therefore the passenger has to move his head backwards to make contact with the head restraint, when relaxing in his seat. Adjustable head restraints are available, which can be adjusted along the vertical axis only. Few head restraints are tiltable. Thus present head restraints do not provide adjustment, so as to conveniently support the neck or head for resting contact. This creates pain in the neck of the passenger occupying the seat.
Object and summary of invention: The main object of the present invention is to provide a head restraint, which eliminates above problems.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable head restraint, which can be adjusted in forward and backward direction to a comfortable position thus obviating the pain in the neck, for the person occupying the seat.
2

This object is achieved by providing a head restraint with eccentric rotary adjustable mechanism for its positional adjustment. Thus in the present invention, the head restraint can be moved around a central fulcrum and rotated to make contact with the neck. The adjustable head restraint assembly comprises a round head restraint of diameter "X", which is eccentrically pivoted to the mounting post.
Round head restraint is provided with a round plate with 2 dowels. One of the mounting posts is provided with a round plate with plurality of equi-spaced holes on PCD (pitch circle diameter) same as that of 2 dowels on rotating plate of head restraint. The number of the said holes and the angular positions of the said 2 dowels and also that of the said holes is such that, the dowels match with two of the holes at any of the rotated position. Due to spring tension, the head restraint plate is normally locked with the fixed plate. By pressing the button, the dowels get unlocked and suitable head restraint position can be adjusted by hand. When the button is released, the spring-loaded mechanism locks the rotating plate to nearest holes on fixed plate.
As the head restraint of “X” diameter is mounted "Y" eccentric on the rotating shaft, it projects from minimum "(X/2 - y)" to maximum "(X/2 + Y)" from its mounting post. It gives an adjustable support at normal sitting position and avoids the pain in the neck of the passenger.
3

Further, it enhances the aesthetics of complete seat and overall look of the vehicle. Round head restraint is also useful for the rear seat occupants as it can be used as forehead rest for them.
Brief description of drawings: The present invention is now
described with help of following figures.
Fig. 1 shows the front view of the head restraint and the
mechanism inside.
Fig. 2 shows the side view of the head restraint in its backward
most position.
Fig. 3 shows the side view of the head restraint in its middle
position
Fig. 4 shows the side view of the head restraint in its forward
most position.
Description: The foregoing objects of the invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with
prior art techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention as described bellow in the preferred embodiment. This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, through out which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
The present invention "Rotary adjustable head restraint for Automobile Seat" comprises mounting posts (1) & (la) on which the head restraint is mounted. The plate (2) is fixed on one of the
4

mounting posts (1) and (la). This plate has plurality of equi-spaced holes (10) with a small entry chamfer. Rotating plate (3) is fixed to rotating shaft (4). This plate is provided with two dowels (8) fixed on it at an angular distance apart and PCD same as the plurality of holes (10) on the fixed plate (2). The number of the said holes (10) and the angular positions of the said 2 dowels (8) and also that of the said holes is such that, the dowels (8) match with two of the holes (10) at any of the rotated position.
On the rotating shaft (4) the actual head restraint foam (6) is fixed. The shaft (4) is located at the centre of fixed plate (3) one side and the other side is located on the other mounting post (la) through a bush (9), which allows rotation. The rotating shaft (4) Is bent in such a manner that it has an eccentric portion (4a) with reference to and parallel to the axis formed by the centre plate (3) and the said bush (9). Head restraint foam (6) is mounted on this eccentric portion (4a). As the head restraint of diameter "X" is mounted eccentric "Y" on the rotating shaft, it can be adjusted at a distance of minimum “(X/2 - Y)" to maximum “(X/2 + y)" from the mounting post the range of the setting of the head restraint (6) depends on the diameter "X" and eccentricity "Y". The most preferable values of the diameter "X" and the eccentricity WY" for this invention are between the ranges 160 mm to 180 mm and 30 mm to 40 mm respectively. Spring (5) is mounted on mounting post (la). This spring helps to push & lock the rotating plate (3) into the fixed plate (2) via
5

dowels (8) and the engaging holes (10) and eventually the shaft (4) and head restraint foam (6). Also it allows the pressing action of press button (7) to unlock rotating plate (3) from fixed plate (2) for rotation of the shaft (4) and thereby adjusting the head restraint (6) to any desired position within the above mentioned limit of minimum "(X/2 - Y)" to maximum "(X/2 + y)" from the mounting post.
The head can be rested on head restraint foam (6). The head restraint foam (6) is fixed to the rotating shaft (4) on its eccentric portion (4a) and can be adjusted by rotating the shaft (4) while pressing the press button (7) to release the lock. After the button (7) is released the head restraint gets fixed in position due to the lock.
A press button (7) is the means by which head restraint position can be adjusted. It is located in such a way that it doesn't project out of the head restraint. So there is no chance that any hard point is projected out of the head restraint, which is extremely important from safety point of view. Also as it is flush to the side of head restraint, there is no chance of accidental or inadvertent pressing of the button and rotation of the head restraint.
Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 show the head restraint adjusted to its backward most, middle and forward most positions respectively according to the above mentioned adjustment procedure.
6

Advantages
1. Rotary adjustable type as compared to the linear adjustable type of head restraint gives a greater degree of freedom to the passenger to adjust it as per his/her comforts.
2. Press button release for adjustment element makes it easier for passenger to rest his/her head against it and at the same time change position of the restraint without any strain to the neck.
The foregoing objects of the invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with prior art techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention described in the present embodiment.
