Abstract: A secondary air injection system for a motorcycle characterised by a four stroke engine having a cylinder block and a cylinder head covered by a cylinder head cover, comprising a secondary air filter having an inlet and outlet, a one-way valve having an inlet and an outlet, a set of connecting hoses wherein the said one-way valve is mounted on the said cylinder head cover characterised in that an air volume is formed in the cylinder head cover permitting the entry and exit of the air through its inlet and outlet path respectively.

Secondary Air Injection

Field of the invention

The present invention relates to "Secondary air injection" and more particularly to integration of secondary air injection valve on the cylinder head of an engine.

Background of the invention

An air injection system is an apparatus for cleaning exhaust gases of an IC engine, wherein secondary air is supplied and fed into the exhaust manifold of an engine. Additional air is provided while exhaust gases are in a high temperature state so that detrimental components in the exhaust gases may be oxidized and made non-detrimental. Typically secondary air injection system for an IC engine comprises of an air filter having an inlet and outlet, the said outlet supplying air to the exhaust manifold through a one-way valve and the said inlet draws air from the atmosphere. The said one-way valve is mounted using brackets on various suitable positions on the frame. As a result of this arrangement, the valve is susceptible to all the factors such as vibrations, jerks, etc. that the frame of the vehicle is subjected through. This affects the performance of the valve over the long run and requires frequent servicing of the secondary air injection parts. As a result of this, cost and maintenance increases.

With a view to obviate prior art defects as pointed out above, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved secondary air injection valve arrangement having a greater shelf life.

Another objective of the present invention is to provide a simplified layout for secondary air injection system.

Another objective of the present invention is to provide better life and serviceability to air valve for the secondary air injection.

Brief description of the invention

One aspect of the present invention is a secondary air injection system for a motorcycle characterised by a four-stroke engine having a cylinder block and a cylinder head covered by a cylinder head cover. The said cylinder head cover comprises a secondary air filter having an inlet and outlet, a one-way valve having an inlet and an outlet, a set of connecting hoses wherein the said one-way valve is mounted on the said cylinder head cover characterised in that an air volume is formed in the cylinder head cover permitting the entry and exit of the air through its inlet and outlet path respectively. Moreover, the said inlet one-way valve is connected to the said secondary air filter outlet and the outlet of the said one-way valve is connected to secondary air delivery point in the exhaust system through a set of hoses. The said one-way valve is mounted on the cylinder head cover externally through a set of bolts.

Detailed description of the invention

A selected illustrative embodiment of the present invention will be now described with respect to the accompanying figures 1,2,3, and 4. A motorcycle comprises of a frame 101, front fork 102 attached to a pivot tube 103 of the vehicle frame 101, a front wheel 104 attached to these front forks 102, a handle bar 105 connected to the front forks 102, a fuel tank 106 attached so as to straddle an upper part of the vehicle frame 101, a seat 107 attached to the upper rear portion of the vehicle frame 101, an engine unit 200 attached to the lower front section of the vehicle frame 101, a swing arm 109 attached to a lower rear section of the vehicle frame 101, suspended by a rear shock absorber 110 from the vehicle frame 101 and a rear wheel 111 attached to a rear end of swing arm 109. The intake system of the engine (not shown in the figure) comprises of a carburettor, intake duct and an air cleaner. The exhaust system of the engine (not shown in the figure) comprises of exhaust pipe and a muffler.

The motorcycle is also provided with a side cover 112 for covering a side section of the vehicle frame 101, a seat cover (not shown in the figure) for covering a rear section of the vehicle frame 101 below the seat 107, a front fender 113 for covering an upper part of the front wheel 104, and a rear fender 114 for covering an upper part of the rear wheel 111. Accordingly, one aspect of the present invention is a secondary air injection system 300 for a motorcycle characterised by a four-stroke engine 200 having a cylinder block and a cylinder head covered by a cylinder head cover 301. The said cylinder head cover 301 comprises a secondary air filter 302 having an inlet 303 and outlet 304, a one-wav valve 305 havina an inlet 303 and an outlet 304, a set of connecting hoses 306 wherein the said one-way valve 305 is mounted on the said cylinder head cover 301 characterised in that an air volume 307 is formed in the cylinder head cover 301 permitting the entry and exit of the air through its inlet 303 and outlet 304 path respectively. Moreover, the said inlet one-way valve 305 is connected to the said secondary air filter outlet 304 and the outlet of the said one-way valve is connected to secondary air delivery point in the exhaust system through a set of hoses 306. The said one-way valve 305 is mounted on the cylinder head cover 301 externally through a set of bolts.

Although the subject matter has been described in considerable detail with reference to certain preferred embodiments thereof, other embodiments are possible. As such, the spirit and scope of the appended claims should not be limited to the description of the preferred embodiment contained therein.


Claims

We claim:

1. A secondary air injection system for a motorcycle characterised by a four stroke engine having a cylinder block and a cylinder head covered by a cylinder head cover, comprising a secondary air filter having an inlet and outlet, a one-way valve having an inlet and an outlet, a set of connecting hoses wherein the said one-way valve is mounted on the said cylinder head cover characterised in that an air volume is formed in the cylinder head cover permitting the entry and exit of the air through its inlet and outlet path respectively.

2. The secondary air injection system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said inlet one-way valve is connected to the said secondary air filter outlet and the outlet of the said one-way valve is connected to secondary air delivery point in the exhaust system through a set of hoses.

3. The secondary air injection system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said one-way valve is mounted on the cylinder head cover externally through known mounting means.

4. The secondary air injection system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said one-way valve is mounted on the cylinder head cover externally through a set of bolts.

5. The secondary air injection system as herein substantially described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
