FIELD OF INVENTION
The disclosure relates to transformers, more specifically the disclosure relates to selfregenerating
breather for controlling moisture in entry into a conservator.
5 BACKGROUND
The conventional transformer uses a breather connected to the convertor for inhaling air from
the atmosphere during lighter load and expelling the air to the atmosphere during full load.
However, the atmospheric air has a tendency to retain moisture in the air and if this moisture air
enters the transformer it results in degradation of insulation and may lead to failure of the
10 transformer.
To control the moisture entry into the transformer a Silica Gel based breather is used in
conventional breathing methodology. The silica gel breather mounted on the Conservator
absorbs the moisture; over a period of use the original blue colour of the silica gel becomes pink.
15 The pink colour of the silica gel marks loss of moisture absorbing property, thereby passing the
moisture to the oil in the conservator. Exposing the oil to moisture will gradually deteriorate the
dielectric/insulation property of the oil inside the transformer. Therefore to regenerate the silica
gel breather, they are heated to a high temperature so that the moisture absorbing property is
retained back.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The present subject matter discloses a self-regenerating breather for a transformer.
In in exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure a breather is mounted on the top of the
transformers. Usually the highest temperature in a transformer is observed near the top of the
transformer. There by utilizing this heat will to regenerate the silica gel on continuous basis such
that the moisture retention property is retained throughout its operations. In accordance with the
exemplary embodiment moisture may be removed in three stages. In the 1st 5 stage the moisture
air starts to enter into the breather is preheated to some extent due to the heat over the
distribution transformer. In 2nd stage the air is made to travel through the pipe allowed to be
preheated again. In 3rd stage complete moisture is removed through the silica gel inside the
breather.
10
Figure 2, illustrates a base plate. The base plate 202, may be fabricated from a mild steel. The
base plate 202, may further comprise a pipe 204 mounted on its surface. The pipe 204 may have
plurality of bends as illustrated to cover maximum surface area of the base/base plate 204.
Further the base 202 may be mounted on a top plate of a transformer. The base 202 may conduct
15 heat discharged from the top plate of the transformer. The heat conducted by the base 202 may
in turn be used by the pipe 204 to pre-heat the air supplied to the self-generating breather.
Usually when the transformer is on load the top of the transformer oil will be very hot and the
bottom of the transformer tank will be less hot compared to the top to facilitate cooling of
transformers by the method of convection. During loading the top temperature will reach around
20 80-90deg C. This top temperature is in turn dissipated by the top plate, which may be used by
the base 202 to pre-heat the air passing through the pipe 204 to breather. Further the air may be
supplied or discharged through a first port 206. The port 206, may be provided or positioned at a
first end of the pipe 204.
25 Figure 3 illustrates a self-regenerating breather 300. The self-regenerating breather 300 may
comprise housing306. The self-generating breather may further comprise a silica gel filled inside
the housing 306 and positioned over the base 202. The conduction of heat by the base 202 and
the pipe 204, enable regeneration of the silica gel automatically without manual intervention.
The housing may further comprise a first opening 304, to observe the silica gel. The first
opening 304 may also be called as an inspection window to observer the condition of the silica
gel. Further the housing comprises a second pipe 302, configured to connect 5 the housing 306
with a conservator. In another embodiment the second pipe 302, may comprise GI pipe having
an outer diameter of 2 cm, that further may be connected to the conservator via a flexible hose.
Figure 4 illustrates a self-regenerating breather on a transformer. The self-regenerating breather
10 300 may be mounted on a top plate 404 of a transformer. Further the self-regenerating breather
300may be connected to a conservator 402 via a second pipe 302
