Sensor Controlled Side Stand Lifter Mechanism For Bike

Abstract: The side stand is used for supporting a parked motorcycle. If rider forgets to retract the side stands before driving, then the non-retracted stand may hit the ground and disturbs the riders control during the turn which ultimately can lead to an accident. Now a days some new methods are used to ensure that stand is in released condition. The motorcycle side stand consists of a metallic stand and helical spring. Some side stand retracts by themself when the motorcycle is dislocate from its support, some others are fit with electrical mechanism, warning devices like buzzers or special retracting mechanism. They are provided with the spring that pulls it back into position to ensure extra safety. Our proposed automatic lifting mechanism for side stand is to provide a foolproof system to lift the stand when the bike starts to move in case it is somehow still in non-retracted position and therefore to reduce the accident which takes place due to non-retracted side stand. The present invention consists of servo motor which is powered by motorcycles 12v battery. Connected to the microprocessor which commands servo motor to lift the stand. The motor is actuated by the speed sensor which is mounted on the front of the wheel of most of the bikes having digital dash board. This is a new type of side stand mechanism, which automatically retracts the side stand through some mechanical and electronic arrangement. The main components of this system are microcontroller, speed sensor, dc battery & servomotor. The speed sensor senses the rotation of the wheel and sends the signal in form of electrical to the microcontroller which interprets these signals and sends command to actuate the servo motor which is used to provide a 90 degrees motion to lift the stand. This mechanism is easy to use and chances of error are very less. The emphasis is on commercial use of this side stand lifter mechanism as it has very vast market. Because digital sensor are already preinstalled in most of bikes now available in market which makes this mechanism cheaper for its installation price for any company or any £ individual. With slightly change in stand design, the only things that are required are 5> servomotor or actuator & a microcontroller. Therefore it is cost effective and reliable. In addition, components that need to be installed require very less space and are very light weight. £ These small additions makes rider journey comfortable and insure their safety from accidents very cost effective way.

Specification

One serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 die on
Indian roads every hour. 1214 road crashes occur every day in India. Two wheelers
account for 25% of total road crash deaths. Given the statistics of road accidents in
India (source NDTV) and especially two wheelers, our proposed sensor controlled
side stand lifter mechanism, found its enormous application in two wheelers to
ensure safe lifting of side stand as the two wheeler stars to move. This can prevent
accident caused by side stand remaining in non-retracted position when rider forget
it to liftit up manually before he starts todrive. It provides a fool proof and cheap
system so that rider remains tension free of lifting up of side stand before driving.
This invention totally works for minimum intervention of human. Also in such
situations in which side stand distracts in downwardposition while riding without
knowledge of the rider because of failure of spring mechanism,it shows its
usefulnessin these cases too by retracting it backwards to safe position thus again
avoiding unusual happening. So it is a cheap, fully automatic and fool proof
mechanism for two wheelers to ensure their safety from non-retracted side stand
related accidents while driving.
DESCRIPTION
The presented system of sensor controlled side-stand lifter mechanism for bike is a
unique idea that will definitely reduce the accident caused due to the ground position of side
stand when the bike is running. It will remove the human intervention in lifting up the stand
while the bike starts to move in forward direction. Hence, the errors caused by humans, due to
negligence in lifting the side stand before allowing the bike to move, are eliminated. Therefore,
the mechanism is fully automatic as it consists of sensors, controllers & servomotor powered by
motorcycles battery. Speed sensor is attached in front wheel of motorcycle that sense the
motion of bike when it tends to move in forward direction. This sensor is connected to the
microprocessor that commands servomotor to lift up stand. It has housing for a magnet passing
through the axle mounted near the centre of wheel, which revolves, with the movement of
wheel. Coil placed near to the magnet within the speed sensor gets induced and electromotive
force is generated which is interpreted by microprocessor to give command to servo motor for
actuate movement.
The presented mechanism uses mostly those devices that are already present in bike.
While speed sensor, servomotor and microprocessor are needed to be installed externally in
order to establish automatic lifting mechanism. Total weight of these components used are only
about lOOgm and so will not disturb design prospective of any bike and can be used in almost
every bike out there on the street.

normally pull back the side stand to its initial position. A key inside the stand to lock it with base in
working position, an inner compressible spring to release the lock, a rubber block to support the key
and a spring holder to support the inner spring. The outer tensile spring was fixed at an angle theta so
that it always pulls back the stand to its initial position. To lock it in working position a key was used
which was supported by inner spring. When the inner spring releases the key the stand would
automatically retracted back to its initial position. This is a mechanical system without automation.
5) A patent titled, 'SEMIAUTOMATIC SIDE STAND LIFTER' bearing application No.
3186/CHE/2014 & Journal No. 06/2016 was published by RAVI. S, RAHEEM. S, RAJESH. S, &
VIGNESH. M on 05/02/2016. Using ratchet and pawl mechanism side stand was going to be lifted
during gear shifting. This whole setup was to be implemented in both front and back gear bikes.
Initially ratchet wheel was welded with the stand and a spring was kept at a necessary tension so that it
can be retrieved. Pawl was always engaged with the ratchet wheel by using damping spring at a certain
tension. Pawl was mounted in between the side stand and the gear lever. When the gear was shifted the
oscillatory motion of lever is converted into rotary motion of the side stand so that the stand is lifted.
This is also a purely mechanical design and no sensor based automation was done.
