Specification

[001] The present subject matter described herein, relates to opening and closing of vehicle side door, and, in particularly, to a vehicle side door checker having an extended stopper link plate which engages with L shaped bracket mounted on the vehicle side door for preventing damage to stopper due to over-opening.
BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART:
[002] Generally, side door checker/stopper (as shown figure 1) is used in the vehicle for stepwise opening of side door and to prevent self-closing and opening of doors when vehicle is at slope. Further, in existing designs, door opening extent (angle) is controlled by side stopper when stopper pin hits the stopper housing.
[003] Figure 1 illustrates the assembly and construction of the side door checker as known in the art. The side door checker assembly 100 has a check lever 102 turnably coupled to an automobile body at end 103. The check lever 102 includes a link plate 105 made of a metal and a cover layer made of a synthetic resin, covering the link plate. The check lever 102 is connected with the body of the vehicle at the point 103. The outer surface of check lever 102 is formed as a detent surface which moves inside the stopper housing 101 for controlled opening by motion of detent surface inside the stopper housing 101. The stopper housing is fixed to the side door in an openable and closable manner. Through the stopper housing 101 passes the check lever which can move relative to stopper housing; a detent mechanism housed in the stopper housing 101 and configured to keep the door at a predetermined open position in collaboration with the detent surface.
[004] Further, the side door checker 100 has a stopper pin 104 press-fitted into a fixing hole provided in a free end portion of the link plate 105 after the stopper housing 101. During the full open condition of stopper mechanism, the stopper pin 104 hits the stopper housing 101 and door stops.

[005] In the current design of the side door checker 100, when the side door is opened, maximum door opening is reached door stopper pin 104 strikes stopper housing. After repeated number of cycles, permanent impression of the stopper pin 104 starts forming on the stopper housing 101. If this is continued, then the lid can be overly damaged and inside packaging/child parts of the stopper housing is disturbed and stopper may malfunction. Also in pin type of stoppers, the stopper pin 104 is susceptible for brittle crack due to irregularities in heat treatment.
[006] Therefore, there is need in the art to develop a different arrangement for stopping the check lever during full open condition of the door to avoid hitting on the stopper housing. The present subject matter provides technical solution for the above mentioned technical problem.

The horizontal bent portion 205a of the L shaped bracket (205) extends in perpendicular direction from the vertical
15 portion 205b away from the inner panel of the side door (201). The L shaped bracket 205 is made of sheet metal having high strength and stiffness. In the present arrangement, the horizontal bent portion 205a and extended portion 204a of the L shaped link plate 204 faces each other. The check lever plate 202 and the horizontal bent portion 205a have clearance for opening and closing of the side
20 door 201.
[0024] In the full open condition of the side door 201, the L shaped link plate 204 of the side door checker engages with the L shaped bracket 205 of the side door 201. The extended portion 204a of the L shaped link plate 204 engages with horizontal bent portion 205a of the L shaped bracket 205 to stop opening of the 25 side door 201. The engagement of the L shaped link plate 204 of the side door checker with the L shaped bracket 205 of the side door 201 restricts further movement of the side door 201 in open direction. Therefore, when side door 201 is fully opened, instead of hitting the stopper housing 203, the L shaped link plate hits the L shaped bracket of the side door for restricting further movement of the
7

check lever plate 202 in the stopper housing. In this way no force/impact comes on stopper housing(203)
[0025] Advantages of the present subject matter:
[0026] Stopper housing is prevented from damage either from stopper pin which 5 itself is susceptible for crack or extended link plate.
[0027] In the present subject matter stopper pin is eliminated. So a child part is eliminated and resulting assembly time at suppliers end is reduced.
[0028] Although embodiments for the present subject matter have been described in language specific to structural features, it is to be understood that the present
10 subject matter is not necessarily limited to the specific features described. Rather, the specific features and methods are disclosed as embodiments for the present subject matter.
