TECHNICAL FIELD
The subject matter described herein generally relates to a side pannier box for a motorcycle and particularly relates to the mounting- of a side pannier box on a motorcycle.
BACKGROUND
Generally, a two wheeler such as a motorcycle is provided with a pannier box at its rear end. The pannier box is utilized to carry a variety of articles. The positioning of the pannier box on a motorcycle varies with the type of motorcycles. Generally, a pannier box is either provided at the side of a motorcycle or at the rear end of the motorcycle.
Typically, in a motorcycle having a side pannier box, a supporting frame is provided for supporting side pannier box. In order to have maximum strength and reliability, the supporting frame is fixed/ attached with the motorcycle by various means. The supporting frame supports the side pannier box for carrying and transporting different articles on the motorcycle.
However, the supporting frame on one side of the motorcycle adds up to the weight of the motorcycle on one side, thereby leading to uneven distribution of weight on the motorcycle and affecting the balance of the motorcycle. Further, the supporting frame acts as an additional component of the motorcycle, which makes the motorcycle more bulky.
Thus, there is a need for a mechanism that overcomes the above mentioned drawbacks.
SUMMARY:
An object of the present subject matter is to provide a simple and cost effective mounting of the side pannier box on a motorcycle.
Another object of the present subject matter is to eliminate the use of the supporting frame, thereby reducing the possibility of unbalancing of the motorcycle substantially.
Yet another object of the present subject matter is to reduce .the number of components of the motorcycle/ box fitting.
Accordingly there is provided a side pannier box for a two wheeler. The side pannier box comprises at least one compartment for storing articles and at least one mounting means provided on the compartment for mounting the side pannier box directly on the frame structure of the motorcycle.
The mounting means are fixedly attached or moulded on at least one of the surfaces of the pannier box for mounting the pannier box directly on the frame structure of the motorcycle. Preferably, the mounting means are provided at the rear surface of the pannier compartment. The quantity and type of mounting means of the present subject matter can be different based upon the configuration of the pannier compartment.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Fig. 1 illustrates an isometric view of a side pannier box 100 of a motorcycle in accordance with the present subject matter. As shown herein, the side pannier box 100 comprises a pannier compartment 102 and a top cover 104. The pannier compartment 102 is a hollow compartment which is open from the top. The pannier compartment 102 is employed to carry various articles to be transported on the motorcycle.
The top cover 104 is pivotally mounted on the pannier compartment 102 and can be locked in the closing position by means of a lock 106. The lock 106 is provided at the
front side of the top cover 104 and can have different configurations as is obvious to a person skilled in the art.
The rear surface 114 of the top cover 104 is pivoted at the rear surface of the pannier compartment 102 by means of at least one hinge 108-1,108-2 as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 illustrates a rear view of the side pannier box 100 in accordance with one embodiment of the present subject matter.
As shown herein, the side pannier box 100 of the present subject matter comprises two hinges 108-1, 108-2 for pivotally mounting the top cover 104 on the pannier compartment 102. However, the quantity of hinges can vary depending upon the configuration of the side pannier box 100 as is obvious to a person skilled in the art.
The side pannier box 100 of the present subject matter comprises at least one mounting means moulded with the side pannier box 100 for mounting the side pannier box 100 directly on the frame structure of the motorcycle. For example and by no way limiting the scope of the present subject matter, the side pannier box 100 comprises three mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, which are provided at the rear surface 114 of the pannier compartment 102.
The positioning of all the three mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3 on the rear surface 114 of the pannier compartment 102 depends upon the configuration of the side pannier box. For instance, in one embodiment as shown herein, each of the mounting
means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3 includes a lug that is moulded with the pannier box 100 and can directly be attached to the frame structure of the motorcycle through a bolt.
However, in different embodiments, different types of mounting means, such as straps, nut and bolt arrangement or any other such means known in the art, may be utilized for direct mounting of the side pannier box 100 onto the frame structure of the motorcycle as obvious to a person skilled in the art.
In the present embodiment, two mounting means 110-1, 110-2 are positioned in the longitudinal direction of the side pannier box 102 on one side of the longitudinal axis 112 of the side pannier box 100 and the third mounting means 110-3 is positioned at the other side of the longitudinal axis 112.
Fig. 3 illustrates a rear view of the side pannier box 100 depicting the mounting means in accordance with another embodiment of the present subject matter. The side pannier box 100 of the present subject matter includes five mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4, 110-5, wherein the two mounting means 110-1, 110-2 are positioned on one side of the longitudinal axis 112 of the side pannier box 100 and the remaining three mounting means 110-3, 110-4, 110-5 are positioned on the other side of the longitudinal axis 112. The present embodiment of the side pannier box 100 ensures a more rigid mounting arrangement of the side pannier box 100 on the frame structure of the motorcycle.
Fig. 4 illustrates a rear view of the side pannier box 100 depicting the mounting means in accordance with yet another embodiment of the present subject matter. The side pannier box 100 of the present subject matter also includes five mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4, 110-5, however, the arrangement of the mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4, 110-5 on the rear surface 114 of the pannier compartment 102 is different from the embodiment described in Fig. 3. In the present embodiment, two mounting means are provided on either side of the longitudinal axis 112 of the side pannier box 100 whereas one mounting means is positioned at the center of the side pannier box 100 lying on the longitudinal axis 112. Such positioning of the mounting means 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4, 110-5 on the rear surface 114 of the pannier compartment ensures further rigid and stable mounting of the side pannier box on the frame structure of the motorcycle.
Figs. 5 to 11 illustrate the rear views of the side pannier box 100 depicting the mounting means 110 in accordance with different embodiments of the present subject matter.
As shown in Fig. 5, in yet another embodiment, the mounting means 110 are moulded with the left side surface 116, the right side surface 118 as well as with the bottom surface 120 of the side pannier box 100. In the present embodiment, the mounting means 110 provided on the left side surface 116, the-right side surface 118 may be attached to the motorcycle through any known mechanism known in the art.
The embodiment of Fig. 6 illustrates the mounting means 110 moulded with the rear surface 114, the left side surface 116, the right side surface 118.
In one embodiment, the mounting means 110 can also be moulded with the rear surface 114 and the bottom surface 120. The positioning of the mounting means of the present embodiment is shown in Fig. 7.
In another embodiment, two mounting means 110 are present on each of the side surfaces 116 and 118 as shown in Fig. 8.
Fig. 9 shows another configuration of the mounting means 110 on the rear surface 114 and on the left side surface 116 of the side pannier box 100.
In other embodiments, two mounting means 110 are moulded with rear surface 114 and one mounting means 110 on each of the side surface 116 and 118 as shown in Fig. 10 and Fig. 11.
Although the invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments, this description is not meant to be construed in a limiting sense. Various modifications of the disclosed embodiments, as well as alternate embodiments of the invention, will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as defined.
