Specification

Side Stand Device

Field of the Invention:

This invention relates to "Side Stand Device" and more particularly for a motorcycle.
Background of the Invention:

Any manual foot gear shifting motorcycle is generally provided with a gear shift lever one side and a rear brake pedal on the other side of the vehicle. The gear shift lever and brake pedal are typically operated by foot of the rider. Whenever the vehicle is parked on the ground using side stand, the gear shift lever is also pressed to engage the gear in first, second or any gear except neutral gear in static condition of the engine so that it is used as a brake to prevent vehicle from moving forward or backward.

In the case of a motorcycle provided with a semi automatic or automatic gear shift, wherein the primary clutch mounted on crankshaft is operated centrifugally, the engine braking cannot be used for parking the vehicle in side stand, this results in sliding of the vehicle either forward or backward direction resulting injury to passerby or damage to vehicle.

In order to prevent the movement of the vehicle, the present invention provides a side stand which is mechanically linked to brake pedal so that whenever the side stand is put in vertical position, the brake pedal is kept in depressed condition to actuate the rear brake.

Summary of the Invention:

The present invention has been devised in view of the above difficulty and it is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a side stand device which will prevent the motorcycle movement when not required.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a side stand device which will facilitate handling of the motorcycle during parking and in slopes.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a side stand device actuating a rear brake which is greatly simplified, compact construction which can be easily installed in position on a vehicle without any substantial alteration of the existing parts.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which is reliable with automatic transmission.

Further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter. However, it should be understood that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, are given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from this detailed description.

Brief Description of the Drawings:

The present invention will become more fully understood from the detailed description given herein below and the accompanying drawings which are given by way of illustration only, and thus are not limitative of the present invention, and wherein

FIG. 1 is a conventional motorcycle.

FIG. 2 shows the right side view of side stand according to one embodiment of the present invention.

FIG. 3 shows the perspective view of side stand according to one embodiment of the present invention.

Detail Description of the Invention:

A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to motorcycle. According to this invention and with reference to Figure 1 a motorcycle comprises of a frame (101), front fork (102) attached to a pivot tube (201) of the vehicle frame, a front wheel (103) attached to these front forks (102), a handle bar (104) connected to the front forks (102), a fuel tank (105) attached so as to straddle an upper part of the vehicle frame, a seat (106) attached to the upper rear portion of the vehicle frame, an engine unit (107) attached to the lower front section of the vehicle frame, a swing arm (108) attached to a lower rear section of the vehicle frame, suspended by a rear shock absorber (not shown) from the vehicle frame and a rear wheel attached to a rear end of swing arm (108). The intake system of the engine comprises of a fuel air metering device such as a carburetor (109), intake duct and an air cleaner. The exhaust system of the engine comprises of exhaust pipe and a muffler. The motorcycle is also provided with a side cover for covering a side section of the vehicle frame, a seat cover for covering a rear section of the vehicle frame below the seat, a front fender (110) for covering an upper part of the front wheel (103), and a rear fender (111) for covering an upper part of the rear wheel (112). The drive from the engine (107) is transmitted from the engine to the driven wheel sprocket mounted on the rear wheel hub mounted on the rear wheel assembly.

The body frame of the motorcycle includes a head pipe/ steering pivot/pivot tube at the front end of the body frame. From the bottom portion of the head pipe at least one down tube extends downwards and obliquely backwards. Both sides of the lower portion of the down tube are provided with a bracket for rear engine mounting. The said down tube is substantially L shaped one when motorcycle is viewed from left side with front wheels on the left hand side and rear wheels on the right hand side.

In semi automatic or automatic gear shift motorcycle and referring to figure 2 and figure 3 on one side of the motorcycle a side stand device (202) is provided and on the other side of the said motorcycle a brake lever pedal (203) is provided. The said brake lever pedal (203) is used to activate the rear brake.

The said side stand device (202) is fixedly secured to one of the down tubes of the frame of the motorcycle. The said side stand pivotably mounted on to the down tube, is shiftable between an operative and an inoperative position. An upper end portion (204) of the side stand is supported rotatably by the side stand bracket (205) through a pivot bolt (206). The bracket (205) is formed with a spring post (207) and a spring (208) is provided between the spring post and the spring post provided on the side stand. The said spring (208) functions to hold the side stand in either the operative position or in the inoperative position selectively.

The said side stand (202) and brake pedal (203) which are on opposite sides of the vehicle are interconnected with a fixed length steel cable (209) through hooks (210) attached to each of them. The said brake cable (209) is welded with a cable end hooking mechanism (211) provided with a swivelling mechanism. The said cable end (211) is placed in the hook and the inner cable (213) attached to it extends till the abutment (212). The outer sleeve (214) of the cable butts on the abutment (215). The above said abutment (215) is fixed to the frame of the vehicle. The said cable further extends and moves on to the other side of the frame. The other end of the cable outer sleeve butts on to the one more abutment (216) provided near the side stand mounting and preferably fixed to the foot rest (217) of the vehicle. The inner cable (213) alone extends further and the end of the said inner cable gets attached to the hook on the side stand. Whenever the side stand is depressed or in operative condition, the inner cable thereby gets pulled which in turn pulls the brake pedal which actuates the rear brake. When the rider removes or pushes back the side stand to its normal position (i.e., inoperative condition), the said brake pedal returns to its normal position, thereby restoring the brake to its original position.
The invention being thus described, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in many ways. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and all such modifications as would be obvious to one skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of the claims.
