Silert: Automated Involuntary Silent Alert Self Defense System

Abstract: Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm by others including humans, animals etc. Physical self-defense is the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of violence. Such force can be either armed or unarmed. In either case, the chances of success depend on a large number of parameters, related to the severity of the threat on one hand, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender. Self-defense may be by way of using martial arts, licensed weapons, hand held personal alarms that generate high pitch sounds to attract passerby etc. The defender may either be strong or may be weak being elderly, disabled, child, sick etc. If the defender is strong enough to react swiftly while in danger then the above mentioned mechanisms work well. However if the defender is weak or the situation happens so abruptly that the defender may not get enough time to use the defense mechanism, then protection becomes a complete failure. With the rising crimes in every country where children, females, elderly persons become victims of human threat of violence, this invention aims at creation of a novel automated involuntary alert system that operates involuntarily by taking into consideration the biological signals of a human being without the knowledge of the victim. This device is named SiLERT (Automated Involuntary Silent Alert Self- Defense System). It is a small device that may be worn by the victim whenever he or she goes out to potentially dangerous areas. The device monitors the human heart beat rate as well as electrical activities of the brain to detect whether the person is in a fearful condition or in danger. As soon as fearful condition is detected the system automatically dials and sends emergency alert information including the location of the user via GPS to some predefined mobile numbers silently without the knowledge of the victim and attacker. On receiving the emergency information, proper safeguard of the victim is guaranteed. This device promises freedom of movement of common men, local population and above all assures the nation a safe surrounding.

1. A method of model design of an automated involuntary silent alert self-defense system consisting of a self-defense hardware device in the form of a cap that would be capable of monitoring the heart rate and brain waves to detect a victim’s fearful condition when in danger by human threat of violence and to send emergency information including the location of the victim to predefined mobile numbers by using GSM network to save the victim.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 which comprises of a microcontroller-based heart beat monitor system that would be capable of monitoring the heart rate in the form of pulse rate.

3. A method as recited in claim 2 which comprises of heart beat sensor module that detects any increase in heart beat rate above the threshold value of normal human heart rate.

4. A method as recited in claim 3 which is capable of activating the brainwave monitor module (whenever the human heart rate goes above the normal threshold value) to monitor brainwave frequencies that are expected to be generated under fearful condition i.e., theta, alpha, beta and gamma waves.

5. A method as recited in claim 4 which activates a GSM network module upon detection of brainwave frequencies under fearful condition that has 5 pre-defined cellular mobile numbers stored which automatically dials and sends emergency information to these mobile numbers indicating danger.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 which is designed in the shape of cap so that the owner can wear the device very easily so as to obtain the brain wave frequencies and the device may not be easily recognizable.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 consisting of the heart beat sensor which is designed to be attached behind the ears to get the proper pulse rate. , Description:BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to the field of self-defense by monitoring human heart beat and brain waves by using electronic circuits to save human lives. More specifically, it relates to the design of an automated involuntary hardware system for self-defense that would monitor human heart beat which normally increases above the normal threshold value when a person is afraid and consequently would detect brain waves which would be generated when a person is in a fearful condition. This would activate a GSM module to dial pre defined mobile numbers for sending alert information including location traced by GPS silently.

2. Discussion of Related Art

Self-defense techniques and recommended behavior under the threat of violence is systematically taught in self-defense classes. There are various methods of self-defense available in today’s world viz., Physical including unarmed and armed, Mental, Avoidance, De-escalation, Personal alarms etc. Physical unarmed self-defense includes many styles of martial arts. Physical armed self-defense includes various licensed weapons like firearms, knives, pepper sprays, switchblades flashlights, baseball bats, newspapers, key rings with keys, kitchen utensils etc. Mental self-defense is the ability to get into the proper mindset for executing a physical self-defense technique. Self-preservation is a very powerful motivator and it is essential for ensuring that one has the mental toughness and proper mindset to emerge the victor in an encounter with one or more attackers/aggressors. Being aware of and avoiding potentially dangerous situations is one useful technique of self-defense under the category of avoidance. De-escalation is a way of using words as weapons or as a shield. This kind of 'conflict management' is the use of voice, tone, and body language to calm a potentially violent situation before violence actually ensues. Personal alarm is a small, hand-held device that emits strong, loud, high-pitched sounds to deter attackers because the noise will sometimes draw the attention of passersby.

However when the attack happens all of a sudden and when the victim happens to be a weaker person like a child, aged, physically or mentally challenged, sick, then the above measures may not work properly. This invention is related to automated involuntary self defense system which would send alert information silently and involuntarily to some pre defined mobile numbers in case a person is in danger without the voluntary action of the victim.

Fear is such a human emotion which occurs when a person is in danger. This self-defense system is based on monitoring human heart beat rate which rises when we are frightened. Our body responds to stress, worry, anxiety, fear and excitement by activating the “fight or flight” system. At chemical level, our body releases a series of hormones that makes us hyper-alert, focused, and energized, and this chemical cascade causes increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and perspiration. Fear conditioning is a behavioral pattern in which organisms learn to predict aversive events. When a danger is encountered, our brain just sends signals to our entire body warning us that we need to leave the life-threatening situation. The hormones then create adrenaline that will keep us awake and alive while we are fighting or fleeing. Our cells too contribute by keeping everything working and pumping and so that adrenaline can pump through our blood. While the adrenaline is pumping through our blood, so are the fat and sugar. That fat and sugar make our bronchi open wider causing heart beat and breathing rate to accelerate. That is why our heart beats faster when we get frightened.
Researchers have found that fear is established unconsciously and that the amygdala situated in the brain is involved with fear conditioning. A new study suggests that brainwave oscillations of a particular frequency may serve to create a "fearful" brain state, generating conditioned behaviors associated with fear. Previous studies have shown that such responses to conditioned terror depend on an interaction between brain regions called the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and basolateral amygdala (BLA). The following frequency ranges of brainwave oscillations are associated with fear, alertness, vigor, problem solving:

* Theta frequency range: 5.8 hertz (cycles per second) --> Fear, Absent-mindedness, Dizziness
* Alpha frequency range: 9.8-10.6 hertz (cycles per second) --> Alertness
* Beta frequency range: 32 hertz (cycles per second) --> Desensitizer; enhanced vigor & alertness (40Hz is the range where beta activity ends and gamma activity begins.)
* Gamma frequency range: 40.0 hertz (cycles per second) and above dominant when --> problem solving in fearful situations.

By monitoring these ranges of frequencies at the onset of rise of normal heart beat rate the system automatically dials up few mobile numbers using the GSM network to send alert information including location traced by GPS regarding the danger state of the victim for saving. In order to reduce false alarms the owner of the device should avoid wearing this when he feels that he is in a safe environment, or while enjoying because under extreme happiness and excitement, the pulse rate increases which activates the process.

Figure 1 is a block diagram depicting SiLERT - Automated Involuntary Silent Alert Self Defense System 20 as presently known in the art. When an attacker attacks a victim his heart beat increases and consequently brainwaves under fearful condition are generated which are captured and monitored which in turn activates a GSM module connected to the self defense hardware device in the form of a cap 10 to send alert information by activating GPS to five pre-defined mobile numbers 11 using GSM link 12 via the base station 13 to inform the police to save the victim.
