Solar Powered Wheelchair

Abstract: The present invention provides a wheelchair with foldable solar panels. The wheel chair is motorised and either power driven or manually propelled. It has a pair of side frames which support the foldable and rotatably adjustable solar panels. Secured to the side frames are a motor drive system, a pair of rear wheels, a pair of castor mounted front wheels, a pair of footrests and a battery support assembly (50A) that supports at least one battery. The whole system of side frames and the solar panels is easily dismantled. The top solar panel is preferably fixed in its position while the right and left panels have the flexibility of adjusting themselves between 0o and 45o and the back panel up to 35o measured with the vertical. The invention uses 144W motors instead of 320W motors that are prevalent at the moment in the solar powered wheelchairs. An attendant is able to occupy the space beneath angled back solar panel without the removal of the panels.
