Abstract: We have come out with a new approach for solving the Security problems in Educational Institutions. The solution would be a patentable belt/ badges worn around the waist/ pinned to the dress that would be tracked at all times in the school premises. The working principle is explained below:- • The belt/ badge would be similar to the technology of Ankle monitors that are designed to be tamper-resistant and can alert authorities to removal attempts, such as cutting the conductive band causing a circuit break. • Based on the GPS (Global Positioning system) each Student"s and School"s staff presence would be tracked in the School Premises through the Belt he/she wears. • School Staff, Security guards, would be provided with dedicated smart phones/ Walkie Talkies through which they would receive the alerts. • Students would be tracked from the point they would enter the school till the point they leave for the day. • The positional data of each and every student would be sent to a Control Software (which would be continuously running in the school), this software would analyze the data based on the rules that are set up. New rules can be configured and existing rules can be modified at any point of time. The data that the control software would receive of each student is o Position of the Student o Student Id • Control software would analyze the data based on the rules set up and appropriate action would be taken. o Sample rules can be as - a lone girl student surrounded by a group of male students (2 or more) for more than a stipulated time (say 10 mins) -then notification would happen. o Notification would be in the form of SMS/ Pager alert to the preconfigured school staff-Teacher, Security Chief, Warden etc. Notification would not necessary mean something wrong is happening, but would mean some intervention would be required. • Through this mechanism student movements would be tracked by the software to prevent any untoward incident happening in the school premises. • Belts/ Badges would also have Smoke and Smell Sensors/ detectors. Notification would happen when smoke is detected. Cases of Smoking/ Substance abuse can be contained with this. • The belt Smart card could also be used as a Prepaid Money card that could be topped up. Parents would top up the money for the Children who can redeem the money for food and other items in school.
Introduction
The main problems in the current education system are safety, security of the students and providing them the right guidance and to identify their short comings which would help them to work and improve upon and glide through to their chosen destination both academically and professionally. We have come out with unique solutions which would help identify and address the short comings at the grass roots level; we believe these ideas would revolutionize the way education field functions today. We recommend solutions for Student security and Comprehensive Education with the help of a specially designed belt and its associated infrastructure (Software, Connectivity, Database and Smart Phone etc - details as below). The problem statement and the solutions are elaborately discussed and written through in the next sections. With this approach Students can be let free with their activities, strict rules would not be applied on them which would help them lead a normal life in school without any restriction -however in the background technology would help track, monitor and keep them secure.
1.1 Educational Institutions - Security Problems
Student security and well-being is of prime concern for Parents and Educational institutions. Education can be imparted to the students effectively when they are provided with safe and secure environment. We believe an environment where Fear & Anxiety exists students cannot effectively focus, concentrate and excel in the field of education. The main factors that contribute to an unsafe and insecure environment are detailed below:-
1.1.1 Ragging:
Ragging is a damaging form of interaction of the seniors in college or school with the juniors, newcomers or first years. It involves insults (simple or suggestive sexual, sarcastic and even physical), running errands for seniors, and many other complex activities. Highly reputed Indian institutions have a wistful history of ragging. It has become increasingly unpopular due to several complaints of serious injury to the victims and strict laws regarding ragging. Ragging is now defined as an act that violates or is perceived to violate an individual student's dignity. The debate about whether, "ragging" is good or bad, is once more in the air. The incidence that brought the ugly face of "ragging" to light, occurred recently, but was reported in media little more than a month later. Media reported: "A 19-year-old management student may have permanently lost his vision after his seniors beat him up in a Coimbatore college. Statistics reveal occurrences of these incidents is on raise nowadays severely hampering the focus, wellbeing and concentration of students driving some of them to quit studies and many others to commit even suicide.
1 1.2 Rape in Schools:
Rape is a heinous crime that demoralizes the person and removes the confidence from an individual affecting his/ her self-respect and Morale. Incidents of Rape in schools causes more harm with Students getting fear to go to school and concentrate on studies, Trust in School, trust in Teachers and Society.
1.1.2.1 Parent phobia
Parents have a constant fear about their children's safety, starting from the point when they leave home to School, safety inside the school campus, travelling to school and back home. The term used for this fear is Parent phobia. The dire consequences of this on the parents would be focus deficiency on their day to day work, absent mindedness which can result in accidents when driving, reduced performance/ productivity in work places, anxiety disorders etc.
12 Current Education System being Non-Comprehensive.
Currently schools have only the Academic report to evaluate the students, but this is not comprehensive enough in evaluation the problems/ shortcomings of each student and devise an improvement plan. For most of the schools (in India at least), the ONLY measure of the school performance happens in public exams where the students compete with other school students. For any school the faculty and syllabus are the same for each year, but still the results keep changing - This implies there is lot to do with the Student's individual mind set, orientation towards education, which means education is not a standard combo meal offer, it's more a customized option for each and every individual.
Current education system lacks in identifying:
• How each and every student is fairing (Other than marks reports),
• Why he/ she is learning in a particular way,
• What's happening in his/ her mind?
Parents whose children are studying in Boarding/ day scholar(regular) schools are not aware on what is happening except for the report cards, they would be more eager to know what is happening with the child - he is developing some complex, is he/she having physical/ mental stress, etc.? Why is each Student Unique, What are the factors that contribute for the uniqueness? Each child is unique to start off with as each one of them come from different background - Economical, Cultural, Regional etc. We propose a technique to uniquely identify the problems of each student considering the uniqueness of each of them -early in the academic life, suggest the solution, track and implement them - by this the students would be brought to the main stream, which the conventional educational methods lacks to consider. The general problems that are faced by students are:
• Memory
• Focus
• Concentration
• Family environment
• Lethargy
• Physical & health Problems
• Vision/ Hearing Problems
• Complex(complexion, race etc)
• Phobias(Exam fear, Teacher fear, Ragging, Rape, Bullying), etc
2 Educational Solutions
We have come out with Solutions in Educational field; these solutions are unique and well thought through. Secured Education is a methodology for ensuring safety and security for students in and around Campus. Comprehensive Education is a methodology for identifying and clearing any road blocks for Students there by igniting young minds to achieve educational and professional success.
2.1 Secured Education - Methodology
2.1.2 Working Principle and its Benefits:
How this technology would be used for preventing Ragging, Rape, alleviate Parent phobia in Schools:
A brief working principle of this methodology is explained below:-
• Initially the profile of all the Students and Staff would be created and loaded to the School database. This would include the -o Student ID/Staff ID o Student Name/ Staff Name
o Student Class & Section/ Staff Department
o Sex
o Age
o Address
o Weight
o Height
o Waist Size
o Phone Numbers - Parent's/ Guardian Mobile Number, House Number
o Photo, Blood group, Health related details - Allergies, disabilities, known disorders etc.
• It would be worn as a normal belt. Wearing of this new School belt would be made compulsory in schools.
• Teachers and Security guards are given this badge (Badge also works similar to belt) to be worn compulsorily and they are also tracked like students. This would be needed to check:-
o Misbehavior of the teachers/guards.
o Work discipline, whether they stay back in the designated areas.
o Punctuality. Attendance - check in and check out of them could also be tracked and monitored just like the students. o Mechanism to check if the badges are removed would also be in place. Body heat and heart beat can be used to verify of the Badge is pinned.
• Belt uses a technology similar to Ankle monitors, which are designed to be tamper-resistant and can alert authorities to removal attempts, such as cutting the conductive band causing a circuit break.
• GPS system installed in the Educational institution would be able to scan the position of the student and the student's profile from the card (similar to mobile SIM) in the belt/ badge at all times, with in the school premises.
• GPS system then sends this position information along with Student profile (Student Id) to a Control Software which records the information in a database. A rules Engine runs periodically at set intervals on the current position and based on the rules setup (sample rules explained earlier) -alerts the school authorities of any intervention required.
• There would be a Control Station, where a computer based dashboard would display the points of interest as dots. This information would be retrieved from the Rules Engine. Working principle explained in section 2.1.3.2.
• Students & School Staff are not allowed to remove belts/ badges in School premises. Removing of Belt/ badges in School would be tracked as explained below.
o How to identify if a student/ Staff removed the belt/ badges: When the belt/ badges is removed, the GPS get information that it is removed (internally an electrical contact make/ break can signify this). And an alert happens to the concerned people through Pager/ SMS/ Public Announcement about the Badge that got disconnected- the people who receive SMS/ alert are configurable.
• Belts/ Badges would also have Smoke and Smell Sensors. Notification would happen when smoke is detected. Cases of Smoking/ Substance abuse can be contained with this.
• The belt Smart card could also be used as a Prepaid Money card that could be topped up. Parents would top up the money for the Children who can redeem the money for food and other items in school. A machine would scan and reduce the amount.
• The rules are configurable and can be changed/ modified by the Schools as deemed suitable.
• Student attendance would be tracked and it also eliminates the Proxy attendance.
• In place of belts, Wrist watches/ Bands similar to watches can be used as alternatives. Tracking and usage remains the same as of Belts.
• Similar technology can also be used in Hospitals, Factories etc for tracking people - Attendance and prevent any unwanted incidents.
• The GPS system would continuously monitor each card attached to the belt/ badge and would sense every movement of the student/ staff and record the position, The Rules Engine runs rules on the data and if finds any appropriate position to inform e.g., it senses any student is surrounded by other students for a long time (either of opposite sex/ students who are elder to him), the scanner will inform the control center something untoward is happening and action to be taken by SMS alert mechanism.
• If the students of opposite sex are too close to each other inside the premises for more than a stipulated time, the scanner will inform the control center something untoward is happening with the location information.
• If a predefined pressure is put on the student's abdomen then the software would scan and send an alert to the Pager.
• If a Student is in close position with Teacher/ Security guards for a stipulated time then the pager would be sent.
• If the Belt is removed in places other than designated places like rest rooms etc - there would be a Pager.
• In Restrooms, there would be a fixed time, after which if the student stays prolonged then the pager would beep. The duration of stay would however be configurable.
• When male teachers/ security guards are close to the ladies rest room, the rules engine would alert the control station, and send SMS alerts to designated people like teachers/ security guards etc. and this information would be configurable.
• The Teachers can block the class/ specific students if required during PT, Drama practice etc where it would necessitate removal of belts for a stipulated time. After that period the Rules engine would start counting on them and start alerting if they have not wearing the belt. They can block this accessing the application from Smart phone.
• All these would be configurable; we can add more rules as required OR modify the existing rules at any point of time. At any point of time if any rule is found to be obsolete it would be replaced by a new rule.
• When an emergency alert would happen, the Security team would jump into action to the designated spot based on the information on the Dashboard and take suitable measures.
• The Smoke and Smell Sensors can sense activities like Smoking and Substance abuse that happen in the school premises.
• Technology helps to alleviate Parent's phobia as follows:-Parents would be notified when
o Children enter the school
o Leave the school By these Parents can be relieved that their Children are in Campus and need not unnecessarily worry about them. Parents can check at any point of time whether the wards are present in the school through SMS, connecting to the Software system in Educational institution and get the positional details of their Children - whether they are in campus or not.
2.1.3 Case Study
Let take a case study to understand how it works end to end in a school that has the Secure Education Technology installed:
2.1.3.1 Student Registration
First the height, weight, waist size of each student is measured and stored in the database along with Id., name, sex, Class & Section, Weight etc. The physical attributes would be used to analyze if the owner is wearing the belt, or a different person is wearing. This information would be updated every 6 months. The physical information can be used to analyze the Student's physical attribute changes, fitness - which can be analyzed by a dietician if required to see if the child is taking the right kind of food, Adequate physical activity etc.
2.1.3.2 An Untoward incident happening in school
The student enter the school, GPS marks him as present in the school a record is marked in the database.
• Assembly/ Prayer - list of all the students attending would be recorded in the database. Missing list of students who are present in the school but missing in prayer hall would be recorded and called out.
• Students disperse to the class. In each and every class students would be scanned automatically through the GPS and control Software (Belt and Infrastructure) and list of students present in the class would be prepared. This information would be recorded in the database.
• Teachers using specifically designed smart phone would make use of any assignments not done, disobedience etc by Scanning the belt against each student in the class and record would be made in the database, this works like scanning an Item in the Supermarket. This would be made using smart phones, which can update and read data from the database.
• Teachers noting down on Students work - appreciation/ complaints happens instantly without any delay and chances of missing out this is eliminated as it happens instantly, in earlier manual ways chances of missing this out is high.
• There would be a display at control station - where in monitoring of critical situation that can happen.
• Students disperse home after class; record of each student leaving would be made in database.
• When students enter Library, Labs, Sports zones, data would be recorded and the time captured till when they leave the premises.
• Teachers, School staff would also be recorded in similar way to track them.
• The Dashboard would look like something as.
• Students in Assemblv:-
Where Blue dots represent male students Pink dots female students
• Young student Ragged bv Seniors:- If any critical situation where ragging might be happening a small female student surrounded by elder female students the display would look like. Small dot represents a student of small class and larger dot of a student of a higher class. On clicking the dot all the details of the student - name, Photo, age, class, and section - all the details that was captured initially would be displayed. This information can be customized as per school needs.
• Girl Student with Security Guard, can turn out danaerous:- Based on the rules set, if a Students are in close unsafe distance with Staff for a predefined time as below, then the alert/ SMS would be sent across.
2.2 Comprehensive Education - Methodology
Current Education system focus just on Marks, without understanding the Psychological, Environmental and other aspects that really contribute for the Educational success for each student and hence to the school. We has come out with a Methodology where in for every student a Unique score card is prepared based on predefined assessments - both Academic and Non Academic. A plan of action is devised for each student that is tracked, feedback given. The plan of action is executed involving the Teachers/ Schools and Parents addressing the genuine problems the child is facing and work towards the Success of the child. Each child is unique, as each one of them comes from different background, having different expectations, different support systems etc. We proposes a technique to identify the exact problems what the child is facing and devise the solution/ pan of action, track and implement them - by this the students would be brought to the main stream, which the conventional educational methods don't devise. The general problems that are faced by students are:
• Memory
• Focus
• Concentration
• Family environment
• Lethargy
• Physical & health Problems
• Vision/ Hearing Problems
• Complex(complexion, race etc)
• Phobias(Exam fear, Teacher fear), etc
We provides a methodology to record, analyze and provide means to improve upon, this path is monitored, tracked with constant feedback involving Students, Parents and Teachers.
2.2.1 Abstract (Patentable Idea Continued from above...)
The Abstract for the Comprehensive education system is explained as below
2.2.1.1 Identify each student and provide scores
Monitoring the Student activities, the current and historical data would be taken from the Student Security system database (discussed earlier).
o Subject wise attendance/ pattern tracking, data that would be retrieved from this
■ General Health of the Student
■ Interest in the studies, in the subject
o Homework/ Assignment completion and date of completion in each subject
■ Punctuality of the student
■ Being aware of the responsibilities
o Quality of Homework/ Assignment completion
■ To project oneself Better
■ Performing necessary background work for the project.
■ Checking out library, internet and gathering the information. o Answering Questions in class. Factors that are measured from this are
■ Being Attentive/ Focused/ Concentration in the class
■ Being Interested in the subject
■ Talking, Time wasting in the class. o Time Student spends in Library
• Information gathering
■ Subjects he/she is interested in
o Amount of time Student spends in Physical activities
■ Physical and Psychological wellbeing.
■ Mingling with other students, being a group person.
• Classifying the Questions that appear in the Examinations/ Tests as o Questions from Notes given in the class o Questions from the text book o Questions that are application of the knowledge that are learnt in the class.
o Out of the Box thinking: Think through a new concept based on the existing idea and provide solutions.
• Based on the Student's answers the classification happens as o Able to understand the question and answer o Think and comprehend the answer, o Compulsive disorders as making silly mistakes, o Time Management, able to answer the questions in the stipulated time o Legible Writing/ neatness.
2.2.1.2 Prepare Score Card
Once we have these data points around each student, a score card would be prepared as
• A Score Card with each of these points and a Weightage would be assigned as. 1- small deviation, 10 - Highest Deviation. There would be a scientific method to assign the weight.
• Based on the Score card for the child, students would be classified & analyzed why the root cause for the problems, some cases might be
o Distraction in class: There could be a problem with Vision/ Earing of the child, o Not intermingling with other students: Student might have developed Complex OR could be a language barrier. o Not opening up in class: Student might have developed a Phobia for the teacher.
2.2.1.3 Implementation tracking and feedback
Devise a plan of action which is time bound and smart measurable. This would involve parents, Teachers and the Student. Examples of some of the action items would be
• Vision/ Earing checkup for the Student
• Counsel the child and alleviate fears/ complex
• A Psychologist would be involved to understand the situation and suggest the remedial actions.
• Record the score card, Plan of action. Analyze how the actions are helping the student to get better. Provide alternate plans if things are not working out for a particular student.
2.2.2 Case Study
Let us consider a case study to understand how the system works:
• Assuming Education Comprehensive education system is installed in a school.
• All Students get registered initially in the Control Software and the associated Database.
• On a daily Basis
o Students are tracked on their presence in the school o Attendance in each class is recorded.
o Teachers will have an |pQf)/smart phone similar device wherein they connect to the app, which would list out all students in the class. Teacher would record student's activity any/ all of below occasions (more occasions can be added)
■ Student answering a question well
■ Student not answering question satisfactorily
■ Student submitting assignment on time
■ Historical assignments. Tracking assignments and checking if he/ she has delivered them.
■ Student Bullying others in the class
■ Student talking and disturbing in the class
■ Communication & Oratory skills
■ Student not attentive in the class. Etc.... o Students would be tracked in school premises for
■ How much time they spend on library, playground, canteen, Laboratories etc
■ Which section of the library they spend more time — this would be a pointer for the interest of students and can also be used by the school to understand which section of library needs more books etc.
■ How much time student spends for sports and extracurricular activities?
o For each Test & Examination, the questions would be classified and based on the results, the data would be collated as
■ Subject wise performance of each student
■ Category wise answers, how many wright, wrong
■ Handwriting, Spelling, legibility etc.
o There would be session with parents and data would be collected on their behavior at home, time spent on activities at home, interests, feedback on school etc. and same would be also be added to the database. o A detailed report of the student is prepared based on his activities in school and residence both academically and non-academically. o Based on the report generated taking into account the student in totality, Team of Child Psychologists analyze and prescribe a plan of action for the Student.
■ The plan of action would include the Students, Teachers/ Faculty, Parents etc. If there has to be a positive change in the Student all the environmental factors need to change to bring about this.
■ There would be an one on one sessions with Students, Parents to apprise them of the problems, what would be the area of improvement.
o Data would again be collected on daily basis for the student-post the Improvement date, o Checkpoints: Data would be periodically analyzed to see how the suggested improvement steps are helping. o Plan of action might be changed based on the analysis of the results, o The overall process ensures a closely monitored environment that coaches the Student and helps in overcoming his/ her limitations and helps attain the Excellence.
CLAIMS:
(1) We strongly believe with constant coaching and guiding a II students can excel academically in their area of interest. By ensuring the blocks that each student has developed over a period of time, he/s he can reach the pi nnacle of education.
