Special Collet

Abstract: Generally, cylindrical components can be hold in chucks, collets to perform operations like turning, milling, grinding etc. For performing machining in components where length to diameter ratio is large, holding of component is one of the major constraints. This invention addresses aforesaid problem in a simple and practical manner. Moreover, the invention not only holds the component but also help in achieving geometrical parameters and tolerances as per requirements. The invention finds its use for holding variety of components fabricated from castings & forgings.

FIELD OF INVENTION:
The present invention helps in holding of cylindrical jobs especially component
which have larger L (length) to D (diameter) ratio.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
In the industry, it is often required to machine components which have larger
length in respect to their diameter. The main problem comes in machining of
inner diameter with respect to diameter which is providing location and requires
machining on inner diameter and to maintain dimensions and geometrical
parameters from the locating diameter of the job. The main constraint is to
minimize the effect of overhanging of component and its effective clamping. The
present fixture provides a convenient tool to address these problems in a
practical manner.
SUMMARY OF PRESENT INVENTION
In accordance with one aspect of present invention which is capable of holding
components having larger length to diameter ratio.
In accordance with one aspect of present invention which is capable of locating
larger length to diameter ratio components.
In accordance with second aspect of present invention is to provide a light weight
and practically feasible fixture.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a more
rigidity on fixture.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a fixture
that can be properly and effectively utilized to hold and firmly fixed the piece by
lesser skilled individuals.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a fixture
that can be properly and effectively fastened to the Machine.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide a fixture
that can able to locate the outer diameter and provide capability to machine on
inner diameter maintaining the geometrical parameters with reference to locating
diameter.
In accordance with yet another aspect of present invention is to provide clamping
such that clamping pressure should be uniformly distributed over the periphery
and doesn’t affect the dimensions after unclamping of the component.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent
and descriptive in the description when considered together with figures
presented:
Fig. A is showing schematic sketch of special collet.
Fig. 1 is showing schematic sketch of Base plate (1).
Fig. 2 is showing schematic sketch Housing (2).
Fig. 3 is schematic sketch of Mounting Ring (3).
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
This invention can be used on different machines with suitable modifications. The
main characteristic of this invention is that it can also hold larger size of
cylindrical castings as well as forgings by minimizing the effect of overhanging of
component. The invention is designed as such, so that it can achieve
geometrical parameter & tolerances as required on consistent basis with
reference to locating diameter of component.
Referring to FIGS A, 1, 2 & 3 of the present invention is a special collet adapted
for holding different types of cylindrical components.
The special collet ‘A’ consist of a Base plate (1), Housing (2) and a mounted ring
(3).
The special collet ‘A’ comprises a base plate (1) having 4 ‘B’ holes so that it can
hold on the machine and 4 ‘C’ for clamping the housing to the base plate ’1’ The
fixture 1 comprises of slot 7 for holding fixture at machine bed to provide positive
clamping.
The special collet ‘A, consists of Housing (2) for locating the larger components
to facilitate machining on its inner diameter. The length and diameter of this
Housing can be modified as per requirement depending on different length and
diameter of components. There is a recess ‘C’ (as per Fig 2) for loading and
unloading of Housing to base plate. Recess ‘C’ is also useful to control the tool
movement by viewing it through recess.
In the Housing ’2’ cave four slots ‘B’ at an angle of 90° up to distance sufficient
to provide flexibility for clamping. The Housing has external threads to suit Ring
‘3’ along its periphery.
The special collet has a mounted ring ‘3’ which has internal threads to suit
housing. There are two handles ‘H’ so that it can be rotated over the Housing to
clamp the component uniformly. There is straight knurling on its periphery for
holding it during loading/unloading of component.

WE CLAIMS:-
Accordingly, the description of the present invention is to be considered as illustrative only and is for the purpose of teaching those skilled in the art of the best mode of carrying out the invention. The details may be varied substantially without departing from the spirit of the invention, and exclusive use of all modifications which are within the scope of the appended claims is reserved. We claim
1. The special collet comprises:
? A base plate to hold special collet on the machine.
? Cylindrical housing with four slots along its periphery to provide holding and location to the component for machining.
? A ring with two screws on its periphery so that it can be rotated on cylindrical housing to clamp component firmly.
2. The invention in claim 1 is capable of holding the component having a large length to diameter ratio.
3. The invention in claim 1 provides an instrument to perform different types of operation performed on its inner diameter.
4. The invention in claim 1 is capable of transferring geometrical parameters from the outer diameter to its inner diameter.
5. The invention in claim 1 reduced cycle time in machining of large casting & forgings. ,TagSPECI:As per Annexure-II
