Speed Detection System

Abstract: The present invention provides, a crankshaft instantaneous speed detection system for an internal combustion engine comprising, an alternator having stator coils generating pulse train at negative to positive zero crossings; and a variable reluctance (VR) sensor generating pulse per rotation; wherein, single pulse generated for one revolution is use to determine the completion of one rotation of crankshaft; and wherein the pulse train is use to determine the intra-rotation positions of the crankshaft.

Specification

Speed Detection system Field of the Invention: The present invention relates to crankshaft instantaneous speed detection system for an IC engine. Background of the Invention: Determining the instantaneous crankshaft position accurately in a combustion cycle has always been of utmost importance for in depth tuning of the IC engine. It keeps the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) continuously informed regarding the piston position, so that various events such as reading multiple sensors (Manifold Air Pressure & Temperature, Engine Temperature, Throttle Position, Exhaust 02 concentration etc), calculations and actuation events such as Spark timing, dwell time, start and end of fuel injection angles are executed in real time. Various detection mechanisms have been used in determining the instantaneous crankshaft position such as "Crank Angle Encoder" it provides noise-free position information with up to 0.1-degree crank angle accuracy. Demands cost, not robust enough and hence limits the engine speed revving range. This is used only for lab purposes for precise combustion measurements. Another mechanism is a VR (variable reluctance) sensor with single reluctor tooth on magneto this system is not accurate as position is updated only once in a crankshaft rotation over a span of few tens of degrees before top dead centre
