The present invention generally relates to a two wheeler, particularly to a
scooter type motorcycle and more particularly to a storage chamber provided in a scooter type motorcycle.

BACKGROUND

One of the major benefits that a scooter type motorcycle offers is that it provides a storage space to accommodate articles such as helmet, documents etc. Generally, a utility box or a chamber is arranged below the seat assembly, wherein the utility box is coupled to the seat assembly by means of a hinge, such that the seat assembly serves as a cover for the utility box. However, frequently a problem of lack of sufficient space in the utility box is encountered when a full face helmet is placed in the utility box and more particularly when small sized articles like wallets, books, diary and the like have to be accommodated along with the full face helmet. Besides the utility box, there is no sepárate compartment disposed around the utility box área to accommodate valuables and small sized articles such as wallet, books, diary and the like.

Typically, the bottom side of the seat assembly is provided with a rigid seat base having a counter profile to cover the peripheral profile of the utility box disposed below the seat assembly. The counter profile of the seat base includes peripheral flanges extending along three sides to cover

peripheral edges of the utility box for avoiding theft of articles from the utility box. Besides the provisión of flanges in the bottom side of the seat assembly, a major portion of space in the bottom side of the seat assembly goes unutilised. It is therefore desirable to make máximum utilisation of the space available in the bottom side of the seat assembly, so that articles like wallets, books, documents and the like can be easily accommodated, even after a full face helmet has been placed in the utility box.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a scooter type

motorcycle with an improved seat assembly construction, wherein the improvement involves complete utilisation of the space available at the bottom portion of the seat assembly.

The present subject matter described herein relates to a seat assembly of a scooter type motorcycle, and particularly to a storage chamber provided in the bottom portion of the seat assembly for accommodating valuables and small sized articles like wallet, diary, books and the like. Pursuant to the present invention, a storage chamber is provided in the bottom portion of the seat assembly, in a space available between a first peripheral wall of the seat base and a seat hinge mounting wall adjoining a front portion of the seat assembly. Further, a lid is provided to cover the storage chamber. The lid is press fitted into a plurality of grooves provided in the side walls of the storage chamber and the seat hinge mounting wall. Said lid of the storage chamber comprises of a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion by means of a hinge. Further, said second portion is provided with an L shaped holder, such that the second portion of the lid can be easily opened by pulling the holder.

Thus, the present construction of the storage chamber provided with a lid enables the rider to store valuables and other small sized articles such as wallet, books, diary and the like conveniently and safely. Also, such a provisión of an additional storage chamber enables best possible utilization of the space available in the bottom portion of the seat assembly.

1

Referring to Figure 1, the layout of a typical scooter type motorcycle with a utility box is elaborated. A scooter type motorcycle 10 comprises of a frame 20 supporting a power unit 30, a front wheel 40 and a rear wheel 70. A seat assembly 50 adapted to accommodate a rider and a passenger is carried by the frame 20. Further, the seat assembly 50 covers a utility box 60 positioned beneath the seat assembly 50 and wherein further, said utility box 60 has an upwardly facing access opening covered by said seat assembly 50. A lower portion of a periphery of the seat assembly 50 is covered by side cover(s) 80 on both sides thereof. A rear tender 90 is arranged beneath the side cover(s) 80 to cover an upper portion of the rear wheel 70. A foot board 85, on which the driver can place his or her feet, is arranged between the leg shield 75 and the side cover(s) 80 Referring to Figure 2, a typical seat assembly for a scooter type motorcycle will be explained. Figure 2 illustrates a typical seat assembly 50, wherein said seat assembly 50 accommodates a rider and a single passenger. The seat assembly 50 is a single piece construction and includes a front portion 50a, a rear portion 50b, a top portion 50c and a bottom portion 50d. The seat assembly 50, in its bottom portion 50d, is comprised of a rigid backing piece, namely a seat base 2. The seat base 2 comprises four peripheral walls namely a first peripheral wall 2a, a second peripheral wall 2b, a third peripheral wall 2c and a fourth peripheral wall 2d. The four peripheral walls of the seat base 2 form a counter profile corresponding to the peripheral edges of the utility box 60, such that there is no gap between the utility box 60 and the seat assembly 50 when an access to the utility box 60 is closed. Further, the first peripheral wall 2a of the seat base 2 adjoins a seat hinge mounting wall (not shown) on which a seat hinge 51 is mounted. The seat hinge 51 couples the seat assembly 50 to the utility box 60. A seat lock 21 provided in the seat base 2 is used to interlock the seat assembly 50 with a slot provided in an upstanding frame member (not shown). Thus, a full face helmet 61 can be secured inside the utility box 60. However, the above described construction of the seat assembly 50 and utility box 60 does not facilítate the inclusión of other articles like small sized books; diary etc after the full face helmet has been placed in the utility box 60.

In one embodiment of the present invention as illustrated in Figure 3, the first peripheral wall 2a of the seat base 2 is located away from the seat hinge mounting wall 9, leaving a hollow space in the form of a storage chamber 7 in the bottom portion 50d of the seat assembly 50. The storage

chamber 7 ¡s thus disposed between the first peripheral wall 2a of the seat base 2 and the seat hinge mounting wall 9 adjoining the front portion 50a of the seat assembly 50. Thus, the first peripheral wall 2a and the seat hinge mounting wall 9 form two opposite walls of the storage chamber 7.Further, the storage chamber 7 formed between the first peripheral wall 2a of the seat base 2 and the seat hinge mounting wall 9 in a bottom portion 50d of the seat assembly 50 is disposed below a rider's seat on the top portion 50c of the seat assembly 50.

In another embodiment of the present invention, the installation of a lid to the side walls of the storage chamber is exemplified. Figure 4 illustrates the same. The storage chamber 7 formed between the first peripheral wall 2a of the seat base 2 and the seat hinge mounting wall 9, comprises a pair of left and right side walls 7a and 7b respectively. The side walls 7a and 7b of the storage chamber 7 are provided with a pair of grooves 7ab and 7bc respectively. An edge 9a of the seat hinge mounting wall 9 is also provided with a plurality of grooves 9ab. The grooves 7ab, 7bc and 9ab are provided to receive a plurality of mounting lugs 8g provided on a lid 8, so that said storage chamber 7 can be covered. The plurality of mounting lugs 8g provided on the lid 8 are press fitted into the grooves 9ab, 7ab and 7bc provided in the seat hinge mounting wall 9 and side walls 7a and 7b of the storage chamber respectively. Thus, the installation of the lid 8 to the storage chamber 7 does not involve the use of any fasteners and is therefore easy to assemble.

Figure 5 illustrates the seat assembly comprising the storage chamber and lid assembly, coupled to the utility box. In the present embodiment of the invention, as exemplified by Figure 5, the storage chamber 7 has an access opening 7d through which articles can be inserted into the storage chamber. The access opening 7d is covered by a second portion 8b of the lid 8, wherein the second portion 8b of the lid 8 acts as a flap which can be opened or closed by pulling an L shaped holder 8c. Thus, valuables and small sized articles such as books, diary and the like can be stored in the storage chamber 7 by pulling the L shaped holder 8c of the lid 8. A first portion 8a (not shown) of the lid 8 remains secured to the side walls of the storage chamber 7, thereby providing sturdiness to the lid 8.

In another embodiment of the present invention, a construction of the lid 8 for the storage chamber 7 is exemplified, the reference for which is provided by Figure 6. The lid 8 removably covers the storage chamber 7. In the present embodiment the lid 8 comprises a first portion 8a hingedly connected to the second portion 8b. In this embodiment the first portion 8a and the second portion 8b of lid 8 integrally form a live hinge 8d between each other. A front wall 8e and a pair of side walls 8f of the first portion 8a of the lid 8 are provided with a plurality of mounting lugs 8g for the mounting of the lid 8 to the storage chamber 7. The plurality of mounting lugs 8g are press fitted into the grooves 7ab and 7bc (shown in Fig 4) on the side walls 7a and 7b (shown in Fig.4) of the storage chamber 7 and the plurality of grooves 9ab (shown in Fig.4) provided in the seat hinge

mounting wall 9. Thus, the first portion 8a of the lid 8 is secured to side walls of the storage chamber. The second portion 8b of the lid pivots around the hinge 8d.The L shaped holder 8c is disposed on the second portion 8b of the lid 8. The L shaped holder 8c aids in lifting the first portion 8a of the lid 8 upwards. In the present embodiment the lid 8 is made of plástic.

In another embodiment of the present invention the lid 8 may be press fitted as a single unit to cover the storage chamber 7, with an L shaped holder provided therein to pulí the lid 8.

Thus, the present construction of the storage chamber 7 disposed in the bottom portion 50d of the seat assembly 50, and in the space between the seat base 2 and the seat hinge mounting wall 9 acts as an additional storage space besides the utility box 60 disposed beneath the seat assembly 50. A rider can conveniently use this additional storage space by lifting the seat assembly 50. The provisión of a lid 8 to cover the storage chamber 7 not only ensures the safety of the stored articles but also ensures that the articles do not slip into the utility box 60 when the seat assembly 50 is locked.

While the present invention has been shown and described with reference to the foregoing preferred embodiments, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes in form, connection, and detail may be made

therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
