Suicide Prevention Device For Ceiling Fans And Process For It

Abstract: Suicide is taking one"s own life voluntarily. In a large number of cases the persons committing suicide do so by hanging themselves from ceiling fan with aid of a rope noose around their neck with resultant compression of vital respiratory passage; spinal cord and blood vessels causes death. In order to prevent the deaths due to this type of hanging, I have devised a process and device to prevent such deaths. I have made modifying arrangements in the shaft of ceiling fan on which the motor and fan blades are attached. Modified shaft is now made of two hollow metal tubes. One narrower (inside) and outer wider one. This telescopic arrangement allow the movement in and out of the inner tube with aid of a heavy duty spring. As soon as the person hangs himself, the assembly moves towards the floor and person"s feet touch the ground and compression of neck is prevented. The assembly can be attached to any existing ceiling fan also and has been tested successfully in 50 persons.

Summary of Invention
This description includes a summary of invention before giving the details of invention and the method of performing it. It will set forth the distinguishing novel features of the invention for which protection is desired and also declares different aspects of the invention: -
This invention can be summarised as the device and process by which hanging from a ceiling fan will not prove fatal The main feature and principle of this Invention is to have a device assembled on the shaft of celling fan by modifying it in form of having two metal tubes arranged in a telescopic manner one tube narrower inside the outer wider tube. 2 sets of parellel heavy duty springs allow the telescopic in and out movements of inner tube from the outer tube, thus allowing elongation of shaft of ceiling fan. Any person hanging by neck from the shaft immediately stretches and elongates the springs and the inner shaft disengages from outer by coming out of it.
This novel feature of my invention allows the feet of hanging person to touch the ground or floor and prevents compression of neck hence prevents death of the individual. The important different aspects of the invention are the modified shaft of the ceiling fan (being made to work like a telescopic sliding in and out of two metal tubes, one inside the other, optimally stretchable heavy duty springs) both of these novel features make the ceiling fans shaft to come down by elongating itself thus making hanging impossible as now the person will be standing on ground rather than hanging in air. Protection is desired for such process and device using such process.

TITLE
SUICIDE PREVENTION DEVICE FOR CEILING FAN AND PROCESS FOR IT-

Field of Invention :-
Background of invention - Suicide means taking one's own life voluntarily. Due to various reasons many individuals committ suicide and a very common method of committing suicide is by hanging oneself from ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are available in almost all living rooms, bed rooms, study rooms, hostel rooms and hotel rooms. Since these fans are easily available and when person who decides to committ suicide in a state of deep depression, has a sudden impulse to end his/her life immediately. He sees this ceiling as the most easily available and handy means of hanging oneself. Usually a rope/long cloth/chunni (a long cloth worn by ladies covering the neck and chest) is used. The person encircles the shaft above the blades of ceiling fan and the other end around his neck, knot is tied and then the persons trips the stoolVchar on which he is standing and hangs oneself. Usually these persons are not aware of technically correct method of hanging which will give instantaneous death by attanto-axial dislocation (bones of neck) with compression damage to medulla (Nervous system part) oblongata and vital centres for heart and respiration. Usually these naive persons die of asphyxia (fack of oxygen and more of carbon dioxide) due to compression of trachea {respiratory tube in neck) and both carotid arteries (blood vessels) which supply oxygenated blood to brain. Hence these persons may survive the suicide attempt if some how the compression on neck is relieved immediately and the brain damage may not take place. So as the background of this invention, the above knowledge is essential in order to make a process/method which will facilitate immediate relief of neck compression as soon as the person tries to committ suicide by hanging.
Object of Invention - It has already been proposed as above that a process / device should be evolved to prevent death due to suicide attempt by hanging from ceiling fan. The principal objective of this invention is to make a device to be attached to the ceiling fans which will prevent hanging's fatal effect. This can be done by arranging the functioning of device as soon as the person hangs oneself so that the fan itself comes down towards floor to the extent that the feet of person

committing suicide start touching the floor. This will relieve the compression on neck which could have been severe and fatal if person was allowed to hang himself by neck with feet hanging in air even for 2,3 minutes. Another objective of invention was also to ensure that the ceiling fan which comes down towards floor at the time of hanging does not hit the suicide attempting person's head. A further objective of the invention was to devise this invention in such a way that even after the suicide attempt has been made and person survives, the ceiling fan again comes back to functioning state to be used as a ceiling fan.
Statement of invention - In order to fulfill and accomplish the above mentioned objectives, I devised a device and a process by making certain arrangements in the shaft of ceiling fan on which the fan motor and fan
blades are attached (please see figure/diagram ) This shaft has
been modified by me. This is now made of 2 hollow metal tubes, one narrower one is inserted inside a wider outer one. Four heavy duty springs with appropriate length and tensile strength are attached on the outer side of outer tube. This assembly is made to act like a telescopic suspension with coaxial pipes of inner 19 mm id (internal diameter) and 25 mm 25 id outer pipe with a parallel set of 4 springs. These springs can with stand elongation strain up to 82 cm from the original length of 32 cm. The fan blades and motor assembly is fixed to the middle pipe and the spring suspension is attached to the outer pipe. This length of 82 cm stretchability is required to make an average height person's feet to touch the ground/floor who attempts suicide by hanging. The fan is not broken from the suspension by weight of hanging, it just gets disengaged due to the telescopic movements and disengagement of inner pipe coming out of outer part and increasing the fan shaft's length so as to enable the feet of suciding person to touch the floor. Since this suspension does not break just lengthens sufficiently so it does not injure the person's head. Springs and device are restored to original length and telescopic insertion arrangement on release of stretch by removing the noose from the person's neck. These pipes are made of rust resistant steel with a minimum thickness of 2 mm. The sliding parts of pipes are well greased

with wheel bearing grease which does not melt and drip to the fan motor even in not summer. Lower and outer pipe is having slot in such a way that when inner pipe is inserted and anti torque pin is inserted as a split pin which can not come out with the jerk of running fan but can easily slide through the slot of outer pipe when stretched. The assembly is not stretched with the weight of fan which is 3.5 to 5 kg in different fans and it needs more than 25 kg to stretch it sufficiently a weight much less than a person likely to hang himself. Springs are properly selected to sustain the expected load and desired elongation. We have tried it on persons having weight maximum up to 110 kg (Please see the attached drawing and photographs). It can be installed in any existing ceiling fans.

Complete Specification -
1. T Fully and particularly describe the invention and its operation or use and the method by which it is performed -
This invention relates to the device and process to be used in existing as well as to be manufactured ceiling fans which will prevent the deaths due to hanging from ceiling fans.
This device is inform of some special arrangements in the shaft of ceiling fan on which motor and fan blades are attached. (Please see the figure/diagram 1,2 ). This shaft has been modified by me. This is now made of 2 hollow metal tubes, one narrower one inserted inside a wider outer one. Four heavy duty springs with appropriate length and tensile strength are attached on outer side of outer tube. This assembly is made to act like a telescopic suspension with coaxial pipes of inner 19 mm id (internal diamter) and 25 mm outer pipe) with a parallel set of 4 springs. The sliding parts of pipes are well greased with wheel bearing grease which does not melt and drip to the fan motor even in not summer. Lower and outer pipe is having slot in such a way that when inner pipe is inserted and anti torque pin is inserted as a split pin which can not come out with the jerk of running fan but can easily slide through the slot of outer pipe when stretched. The assembly is

not stretched with the weight of fan which is 3.5 to 5 kg in different fans and it needs more than 25 kg to stretch it sufficiently a weight much less than a person likely to hang himself. Springs are properly selected to sustain the expected load and desired elongation. We have tried it on persons having weight maximum up to 110 kg (Please see the attached drawing 1,2 and photographs 1,2). It can be installed in any existing ceiling fans.
2. I Disclose the best method of performing the invention which is known to the applicant for which he is entitled to claim protection once the above assembly is attached to the ceiling fan and the fan is hung from the roof, it is ready for operation. As the person who is trying to committ suicide hongs himself with aid of rupe/long cloth the person trips the stool/ chair or which he is standing and hqngs in air, the weight of person pulls the springs and assembly down towards floor and due to the optimal length and stretch ability of spring the whole assembly goes down to the extent that the person's feet touch the ground. This prevents compression on neck arteries and respiratory passage and hence prevents death. Once he lands on the floor it makes some noise and he may be attended by other family member or other persons in vicinity. Moreover this failed attempt may discourage him from committing suicide as suicide attempt may be on transient impulse and it may not rear. Once the attempt has failed, removing the noose from the neck and traction recessed will pull back the springs and device to resting original position.
c) X End with a claim or set of claims defining the scope of invention for which protection is claimed.
1) Scope of invention encompasses the set of processes which enable the ceiling fan's suicide prevention device to function in such a way as to abort suicide attempt by elongation of shaft length with aid of springs and telescopic arrangement of the shaft. This will be achieved by the arrangement and method as described above. I claim protection for the device and this process of elongation of fan's shaft by weight of the person committing suicide. Scope of the this invention encompasses all such shaft elongation techniques which work on the principle and process devised by me.
