Specification

Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a suitcase with luggage weight measuring devices and
in particular, this invention relates to the suitcase with an integrated scale for
measuring its weight. More particularly, this present invention also relates to a
suitcase having holding frame allows scale to be mounted on the parallel frame
structure commonly found in existing suitcases.
Background of the invention and the related Prior Art
One of the most inconvenient aspects of modern life is the need to pack
suitcases and the like. Today, airlines typically charge extra for weight
overages. There has not been an easy system for permitting travelers to pre-
weigh luggage. In the event that luggage is overweight, passengers are assessed
steep penalties. There have been a number of patents issued in the area of
luggage weight measuring devices. None are integral to the luggage.
The document GB2460497 provided a self-weighing suitcase comprises a base
portion and a weighing device, the weighing device being disposed upon the
base portion such that the weight of items placed within the case may be
monitored and displayed for the user as the case is packed. The display may be

configured to display whether the weight is acceptable for travelling on a plane.
Preferably, the weighing device comprises a plurality of load cells and the
suitcase has a frame held in a spaced relationship from the base portion by the
load cells. In use, the self-weighing suitcase allows the user to monitor the
weight of the case whilst packing.
According to the document US2008251298 , a portable handheld electronic
scale can weigh luggage and other objects. The scale includes an electronic
weight-measuring device configured to measure and indicate the weight of the
luggage. If the weight of the item of luggage exceeds the weight restriction of
an airline, the traveler can reduce the weight of the item of luggage below the
weight limit set by the airline by removing some of the contents of the item of
luggage. Depending upon the particular embodiment of the scale, a user can
comfortably hold the scale either parallel or perpendicular to the ground when
the scale is used to lift the item of luggage off of a ground surface in order to
obtain the weight of the item of luggage. An audible signal may be given when
the measured weight is fixed on a display and/or when it is greater than a set
limit.
The invention provides a portable scale that allows travelers to calculate the
weight of their luggage and compare the weight against weight limits that are

imposed by common carriers. The scale includes circuitry for calculating
weight and a memory for storing weight limits. Weight and other information is
shown to the user via a display screen. In the preferred embodiment, the scale
includes a hook and handle that facilitate weighing suitcases and other objects.
The preferred embodiment also includes a digital measuring tape that allows
the traveler to check the size of his luggage against size restrictions imposed by
common carriers. The scale can also be incorporated into a portable weighing
mat, which allows weight to be determined simple by placing the object on the
mat.; The scale can also be incorporated into the handle of a suitcase wherein
the weight of the suitcase is calculated when the suitcase is lifted by its handle
which has been stated in the document US2007045011.
The invention belongs to the technical field of an weighing device for
providing an indication of the weight of a piece of luggage, the device
comprising load bearing means adapted to be placed on or form part of the
carry means of the piece of luggage (H) and indicator means associated with
the load bearing means whereby when the luggage is lifted by the carry means
(H), the load bearing means is subjected to the mass of the piece of luggage and
the indicator means provides an indication of the weight of the piece of luggage
which has been stated in the document US2005224261.

The patent document GR1007975 provide a suitcase comprising an
incorporated weighing device, an overlapping member, a digital LCD screen
and a buzzer located inside the electronic board is disclosed. Purpose: To
weight suitcases in whatever weigh-measuring system, via a switch found next
to the digital LCD screen. Advantage: No fines inflicted due to excessive
suitcase weight; excellent hygienic of the passenger's goods since the opening
of the suitcase is avoided; time saving during check-in.
The other document CN202720039 discloses a weighing device for bags and
suitcases, which comprises four weight sensors, a control circuit and a display
device, wherein the weight sensors are connected to input ends of the control
circuit through wires, and an output end of the control circuit is connected to
the display device. The weighing device is characterized in that the weight
sensors are placed in a cavity formed by a base and a cover body, the middle of
the cover body is connected to a load-bearing bracket through a soft material,
and the load-bearing "bracket is inlaid with metal sheets. According to the utility
model, as the weight sensors are placed in the cavity formed by the base and
the cover body, the middle of the cover body is connected to the load-bearing
bracket through the soft material, and the load-bearing bracket is inlaid with
metal sheets, the base can be installed on a bag or suitcase body conveniently.

The weighing device disclosed by the utility model has the characteristics of
simple structure and practicality.
According to the document GB2411966, to weigh a piece of luggage, such as a
suitcase, in one embodiment an electronic weighing device is used to lift the
luggage by way of a strap releaseably fitted around the handle. In a further
embodiment the weighing device is integral with the suitcase, incorporated in
the handle.
The document 406/MUM/2004 describes a light weight stiffener for luggage. It
is cost effective and travel friendly. The stiffener consists of a laminate member
provided with at least one reinforcing frame consisting of at least one or more
wire embedded in a holding means. This frame is fixed to the periphery of the
laminate which when incorporated in the luggage provides a taut stiffener
conforming to the contour of the luggage.
None of these above patents, however alone or in combination, disclose the
present invention. The invention consists of certain novel features and a
combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the
accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it
being understood that various changes in the details may be made without

departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present
invention.
Summary of the invention
This invention relates to a suitcase with luggage weight measuring devices and

The suitcase having a weighing system for weighing luggage on hard or soft
surfaces in real time which comprises a weighing platform and a holding frame,
both of which are designed to be manufactured by plastic injection moulding.
The weighing mechanism is based on a strain gauge measuring device.
The weighing mechanism comprises of mechanical and electrical components.
Mechanical components include an aluminium cantilever and fasteners.
Electrical components include a strain gauge device connected to a
microprocessor and a mini LCD screen.

The weighing platform is a uniform and rigid structure with the purpose of
effectively transferring all the load it is subjected to, towards the weighing
mechanism. The sleeves at the four corners of the platform are to be
respectively mounted on the four protruding shafts of the holding frame. This
constrains the motion of the platform in the vertical axis. Hence, accurate
measurement of the weight is possible even if the weighing platform is
subjected to uneven loading.
The holding frame allows scale to be mounted on the parallel frame structure in
existing suitcases.

to embodiments thereof. It will be evident that various modifications and
changes may be made thereunto without departing from the broader spirit and
scope of the invention as set forth in the claims that follow. The specification
and drawings are accordingly to be regarded in an illustrative rather than

restrictive sense. Therefore, the aim in the appended claims is to cover all such
changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the
invention. The matter set forth in the foregoing description and accompanying
drawings is offered by way of illustration only and not as a limitation. The
actual scope of the invention is intended to be defined in the following claims
when viewed in their proper perspective based on the prior art.
