Specification

[001} This application relates to superchargers and baffles to damp noisewithin
the supercharger housing.
Background
[002} Noise, vibration, and harshness can be caused by air pulsations within the
rotor bore of the housing.
SUMMARY
[003} The disclosure overcomes the above disadvantages and improves the art
by way of a supercharger housing having an internal compartment above the rotor
mounting holes and a baffle within the compartment.
[004} Additional objects and advantages will be set forth in part in the
description which follows, and in part will be obvious from the description, or may be
learned by practice of the disclosure. The objects and advantages will also be realized
and attained by means of the elements and combinations particularly pointed out in the
appended claims.
[005} It is to be understood that both the foregoing general description and the
following detailed description are exemplary and explanatory only and are not restrictive
of the claimed invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[006} Figure 1 is a view of a supercharger housing.
[007} Figure 2 is a cross-section view of the supercharger housing.
[008} Figure 3 is an exploded view of a baffle assembly and a cover plate.
[009} Figure 4. is another cross-section view of a supercharger housing.
[010} Figure 5 is a view of a baffle assembly.
[011} Figure 6 is a view of a cover plate.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[012] Reference will now be made in detail to the examples which are illustrated
in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be
2
used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts. Directional references
such as "left" and "right" are for ease of reference to the figures.
[013] The supercharger baffle claimed below damps noise, vibration &
harshness (NVH) for an axial inlet, radial outlet supercharger.
[014] A supercharger housing can be cast to include an inlet, an outlet and a
compartment for receiving the baffle. The compartment can cooperate with features,
such as a cover plate, to brace the baffle in place. Pressure fitting can also be used to
brace the baffle. The compartment can comprise a machined surface to tailor the
compartment to the shape of the baffle and to provide a recess for the cover plate.
[015] The baffle can be formed by welding or spot welding wires together to
form a network of wires. The wires form layers and the layers are stacked and joined by
cross"pieces. The layers can be parallel to one another.
[016] The baffle can conform to the shape of the compartment. Joinery within
and among the layers can also resemble a shape of the compartment.
[017] Other implementations will be apparent to those skilled in the art from
consideration of the specification and practice of the examples disclosed herein. It is
intended that the specification and examples be considered as exemplary only, with the
true scope of the invention being indicated by the following claims.

We claim:
1. A supercharger housing comprising:
an outlet plane comprising an outlet opening;
an inlet plane perpendicular to the outlet plane, the inlet plane comprising:
an inlet opening;
rotor mounting holes above the inlet; and
a compartment above the rotor mounting holes;
a baffle within the compartment; and
a rotor bore fluidly connecting the inlet opening to the outlet opening.
2. The supercharger housing of claim 1, wherein the compartment comprises a
machined surface for press-fitting against the baffle.
3. The supercharger housing of claim 1, further comprising a cover plate for
securing the baffle within the compartment.
4. The supercharger housing of claim 3, wherein the compartment comprises a
recess for receiving the cover plate.
5. The supercharger housing of claim 1, wherein the compartment comprises a
general V-shape.
6. The supercharger housing of claim 1, wherein the compartment comprises a
polygonal boomerang shape.
7. The supercharger housing of any one of claims 1-6, wherein the baffle comprises
a wired mesh.
8. The supercharger housing of claim 5, wherein the wired mesh is a multi-layered
assembly.
9. The supercharger housing of claim 5, wherein the wired mesh comprises multiple
layers of wire in a grid pattern.
10. The supercharger housing of claim 5, wherein the wired mesh comprises a
network of wires welded together to form a multi-layered assembly of wires in a grid
pattern.
11. The supercharger housing of claim 6, wherein each layer of the multi-layer
assembly is parallel to each other layer in the multi-layer assembly, and wherein crosspieces
connect each layer to each other layer to form a network of wires.
4
12. The supercharger housing of claim 5 or 6, wherein the baffle comprises an
outline shape, and the outline shape of the baffle conforms to the shape of the
compartment.
13. The supercharger housing of claim 12, comprising joinery, wherein the joinery
resembles a line intersecting the outline shape of the compartment.
14. The supercharger housing of claim 11, comprising joinery, wherein the joinery
resembles an outer edge of the outline. shape of the compartment.
15. The supercharger housing of claim 1, wherein the baffle is braced against the
compartment to limit vibration.
16. The supercharger housing of claim 1, wherein the outlet plane, the inlet plane,
and the rotor bore are cast together.
