SYNERGISTIC INSECTICIDAL FORMULATION OF PROPARGITE AND LAMBDA-CYHALOTHRIN

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:

The present invention relates to a synergistic insecticidal formulation of Propargite and Lambda-cyhalothrin. The present invention particularly relates to a synergistic insecticidal formulation of Propargite and Lambda-cyhalothrin, wherein the said composition is Suspoemulsion (SE) formulation and the process of preparation thereof.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

Pesticides are the chemicals which are applied on any infected surface of plants to kill or eliminate fungus, bacteria, insects, snails, slugs, or weeds. Pesticides are broadly used in agriculture and have facilitated a significant increase in yield of crops and productivity.

In order to control the harmful effects of insects on crops, an extensive range of active insecticide compounds have been developed. Many active insecticide compounds in different formulations are commercially available. The efficacy of these conventional insecticide compounds is restricted in controlling certain groups of insect. Thus, the problem of controlling a broad spectrum of insects by a single product still exists. Presently, several insecticidal formulations are used in comparatively higher concentrations and doses. This leads to a higher cost of the product, higher residues on plant produce and also inside the soil causing toxicity to non-target organisms and have deleterious effects on the desirable insect species and other soil dwelling organisms.

Many researchers have developed a variety of chemicals and their formulations which are effective in controlling the insects from destroying the crops. Nevertheless, there is a continuous requirement for novel compositions and new methods to control the broad range of insects without harming the ecosystem and water bodies. Specifically, in view to achieve economical results and eco-friendly compositions, many efforts have been made to maximize the performance of known active ingredients. Also, there is a need for insecticidal compositions which demonstrate synergistic effect at lower dose and cost.

Propargite (2-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) cyclohexyl prop-2-ynyl sulfite) is a synthetic insecticide that belongs to the class of ‘sulfite ester acaricide’. Propargite was first introduced as an acaricide by Uniroyal Chemical in 1994. It is often supplied as emulsifiable concentrates, oil in water emulsion, water-soluble bags or wettable powder.

Propargite is a sulfite ester of acaricide for control of many species of phytophagous mites (particularly motile stages) on a variety of crops, including fruit trees, nuts, tomatoes, vegetables, ornamental crops, cotton, maize, peanuts and sorghum.

Propargite was first disclosed in patent US 3272854 and chemically represented as below structure:

The molecular formula of Propargite is C19H26O4S and molecular weight is 350.47 g/mol and having water solubility of 0.215 mg/L at 20oC. Propargite is the insecticide from IRAC (Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) Group 12C class. It is a complex molecule with three chiral features. Propargite is a non-systemic acaricide with predominantly contact action, and long residual activity.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. It has lower aqueous solubility, is relatively volatile and is non-mobile. Based on its chemical properties, lambda-cyhalothrin has low risk of leaching into ground water. Lambda-cyhalothrin is listed in the 3A group according to the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) classification.

The IUPAC name of Lambda-cyhalothrin is (R)-a-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (1S)-cis-3-[(Z)-2-chloro-3,3,3–trifluoropropenyl]- 2, 2- dimethyl cyclopropane carboxylate and (S)-a-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (1R)-cis-3-[(Z)-2-chloro-3, 3, 3 - trifluoropropenyl] -2, 2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate and the molecular formula is C23H19ClF3NO3. The relative Molecular mass of Lambda-cyhalothrin is 449.85 g / mol. The solubility of Lambda-cyhalothrin in water is 0.005 mg/l at 20ºC.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is chemically represented as below structure:

Lambda-cyhalothrin is used to control a wide spectrum of insect pests, e.g. aphids, beetles, thrips, Lepidoptera larvae, Coleoptera larvae and adults, etc. Lambda-cyhalothrin is used to provide protection from pests in cereals, ornamentals, potatoes, vegetables, cotton and other crops. It also provides good control of insect-borne plant viruses and is also used for controlling insect pests in public health.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a non-systemic insecticide with contact and stomach action and repellent properties. It gives rapid knockdown and long residual activity. Lambda-cyhalothrin is commercially marketed as encapsulated suspension, emulsion concentrate, oil in water emulsion, Ultra-low volume formulation, water dispersible granule or wettable powder.

In India or anywhere in the world, in agricultural production, using synthetic or chemical agent is the most effective means in order to control pests. However, the main disadvantage of such insecticide is that on long run, the insects develop resistance towards that insecticide and as a result to produce effective result, higher concentration of the insecticide is to be used. Here again using higher dose of insecticide may result in some detrimental effect to soil as well as environment. Therefore, in general practice, usually combination of insecticide with another insecticide or another fungicide is used in different concentration as per requirement.

However, when combination of one or more insecticide are used, the main challenge comes is to develop a formulation or composition which is stable, easy to use, safe and cost effective with superior efficacy. The present invention satisfies the existing needs, as well as others, and generally overcomes the deficiencies found in the prior art.

Chinese patent CN105580834A describes a multifunctional combined insecticide, which is characterized in that 30-40 grams of methomyl, 20-30 grams of Propargite and 10-20 grams of pyrethroid preparation are uniformly mixed in each kilogram of water; wherein the pyrethrin preparation is selected from one of fenpropathrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin or cyfluthrin. This prior art does describe the combination of Propargite with pyrethroid but nowhere discloses combination of Propargite and Lambda-Cyhalothrin in SE formulation.

Japanese patent JPH05112411 relates to an insecticidal composition for agriculture and horticulture, which comprises at least one synthetic pyrethroid insecticidal compound and Propargite as active ingredients. This prior art does describe the combination of Propargite with pyrethroid but nowhere discloses combination of Propargite and Lambda-Cyhalothrin in SE formulation.

Indian patent 202021035156 relates to an insecticidal composition comprising: a) Lambda-cyhalothrin in an amount of 0.1% to 50% by weight of the composition; b) at least one another insecticide in an amount of 0.1% to 50% by weight of the composition; and c) a mixture of a weak acid and its salt. This prior art nowhere discloses the SE formulation of Propargite and Lambda-Cyhalothrin.

Indian patent 235/MUM/2015 relates to a composition comprising Bifenthrin and Propargite in a Suspoemulsion form. The composition further comprises at least one surfactant, at least one stabilizer, at least one viscosity modifying agent, at least one anti-freezing agent, at least one carrier and at least one anti-foaming agent. This prior art does describe the combination of Propargite with pyrethroid but nowhere discloses the combination of Propargite and Lambda-cyhalothrin in SE formulation.

Combinations of different pesticides have been practiced in the art, but the physical stability of such combination has been a concern. Therefore, there is a need for a synergistic insecticidal composition which is compatible and stable over long periods.

However, there is no formulation or composition available of Propargite and Lambda-cyhalothrin in Suspoemulsion formulation which is stable and yet effective.

In the present invention, inventors have arrived to a synergistic insecticidal formulation of Propargite and Lambda-cyhalothrin in Suspoemulsion formulation and the process of preparation which is stable, effective and overcome all the problems mentioned in prior art as described herein.
