SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR COLLECTIBLES TRADING
FIELD OF DISCLOSURE
[0001] The present disclosure relates to collectibles trading. In particular, it pertains to a network connection based system for collectibles trading.
BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0002] The background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[0003] Many articles are collected by individuals with a particular interest in that field, or by people intending to trade such items professionally in order to make a living. Such articles are grouped in a general category of collectibles and can be of a very wide variety such as toys, lithograph or other artwork, stamps, comic books, trading cards, trading pins, art, jewelry, watches, sports memorabilia, stuffed animals, historical items or items owned by notable and famous figures, and antiques.
[0004] Valuation of these items presents a complex problem as it can be highly subjective and requires highly skilful appraisers. It depends upon many factors such as how many number of that items (old coins, for example ) are in existence at the moment, historical – or even not so old - context of the item, perceived value of the item, platform used for trading the item etc. These valuations are frequently very high. For example, the most expensive letter sold at auction was sold for US$6,098,500 on 10 April 2013 by Christie's, New York, USA, for a letter written by Francis Crick in 1953 to his son Michael Crick, outlining the revolutionary discovery of the structure and function of DNA.
[0005] Wide variations in legitimate value exist for what might seem to be similar items, leaving the untrained observer completely at a loss to estimate value accurately. Moreover, sellers and appraisers of such valuables sometime deliberately obscure faults, flaws, or other negative aspects, and disclose only as much information regarding the items they describe as they must. In the buying and selling of collectibles, the doctrine of caveat emptor applies vigorously.
3
[0006] Internet offers a very convenient means of global, 24X7X365 trading in such items. At the same time, anonymous nature of Internet along with lack of skills of a majority of buyers/ sellers has lead to proliferation of unethical and illegal methods such as counterfeiting that can cause substantial losses to an unskilled person trading in such items.
[0007] At the same time, many sellers and/or buyers require anonymity, at least till the time a transaction is completed, for privacy and security reasons. Indeed, some of the best collectibles can be found in “private” collections hardly ever shown to the general public.
[0008] Many such transactions occur at exhibitions, conventions etc. Unless a person is well experienced, he may be easily duped at such places in buying an item at a price many times more than its worth or, likewise, selling an item many times below its worth.
[0009] Taxation upon sales of collectibles presents another complex problem. While right valuation is a problem as highlighted above, many such transactions occur via non-banking channels thereby increasing possibility of tax evasion and consequent loss of revenue to government.
[00010] Hence, there is a need in the art for a convenient system/architecture to trade in collectibles such as antiques. The system should be available globally at all times, and enable a collectible to be graded, such gradings being always available to potential buyers while its proper value is made available to its seller. The system should offer privacy and security to buyers and sellers when they want it and also people to develop their skills in properly evaluating value of collectibles/antiques of interest to them so that they can optimally trade in them. Further, the system should eliminate loss of tax revenue to the government.
[00011] All publications herein are incorporated by reference to the same extent as if each individual publication or patent application were specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated by reference. Where a definition or use of a term in an incorporated reference is inconsistent or contrary to the definition of that term provided herein, the definition of that term provided herein applies and the definition of that term in the reference does not apply.
[00012] In some embodiments, the numbers expressing quantities or dimensions of items, and so forth, used to describe and claim certain embodiments of the invention are to be understood as being modified in some instances by the term “about.” Accordingly, in some embodiments, the numerical parameters set forth in the written description and attached claims are approximations that can vary depending upon the desired properties sought to be obtained by
4
a particular embodiment. In some embodiments, the numerical parameters should be construed in light of the number of reported significant digits and by applying ordinary rounding techniques. Notwithstanding that the numerical ranges and parameters setting forth the broad scope of some embodiments of the invention are approximations, the numerical values set forth in the specific examples are reported as precisely as practicable. The numerical values presented in some embodiments of the invention may contain certain errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation found in their respective testing measurements.
[00013] As used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of “a,” “an,” and “the” includes plural reference unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Also, as used in the description herein, the meaning of “in” includes “in” and “on” unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.
[00014] The recitation of ranges of values herein is merely intended to serve as a shorthand method of referring individually to each separate value falling within the range. Unless otherwise indicated herein, each individual value is incorporated into the specification as if it were individually recited herein. All methods described herein can be performed in any suitable order unless otherwise indicated herein or otherwise clearly contradicted by context. The use of any and all examples, or exemplary language (e.g. “such as”) provided with respect to certain embodiments herein is intended merely to better illuminate the invention and does not pose a limitation on the scope of the invention otherwise claimed. No language in the specification should be construed as indicating any non-claimed element essential to the practice of the invention.
[00015] Groupings of alternative elements or embodiments of the invention disclosed herein are not to be construed as limitations. Each group member can be referred to and claimed individually or in any combination with other members of the group or other elements found herein. One or more members of a group can be included in, or deleted from, a group for reasons of convenience and/or patentability. When any such inclusion or deletion occurs, the specification is herein deemed to contain the group as modified thus fulfilling the written description of all Markush groups used in the appended claims.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[00016] It is an object of the present disclosure to provide for a system that enables trading in collectibles based on correct grading and valuation of such collectibles, and is available globally at all times.
[00017] It is an object of the present disclosure to provide for a network connected system as above that enables sellers and / or buyers to retain their anonymity until a sale is complete.
[00018] It is another object of the present disclosure to provide for a system as above that enables its users to gather skills in proper grading and valuation of collectibles so as to trade optimally in them.
[00019] It is yet another objet of the present disclosure to provide for a system as above that eliminates loss of tax revenue to the government.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[00020] The present disclosure mainly relates to a network connected system for collectibles trading, and more particularly to a system for collectibles trading that is configured to be accessed by a computing device through an interface such as a web interface or a mobile application, while allowing for grading and valuation of various collectibles by using any or a combination of user inputs and appraiser’s inputs
[00021] In an aspect, the present disclosure relates to a network enabled system for trading of a collectible of a seller, said system comprising a non-transitory storage device having embodied therein one or more routines operable to facilitate trading of the collectible; and one or more processors coupled to the non-transitory storage device and operable to execute the one or more routines, wherein the one or more routines include a grading and valuation module, which when executed by the one or more processors, can grade and associate a value to the collectible based on evaluation of the collectible by an appraiser, wherein the collectible is owned by seller of the collectible; and a listing and trading module, which when executed by the one or more processors, can list the collectible along with the grade issued by the appraiser and the associated value for presentation to one or more potential buyers of the collectible, wherein the listing and trading module is further configured to enable at least one buyer of the one or more potential buyers to purchase or auction for the collectible.
6
[00022] In an aspect, the grading and valuation module can be configured to determine the grade and the value of the collectible based on any or a combination of a functional category to which the collectible pertains, seller attributes, era to which the collectible pertains, antiquity, historical background, and rarity. In another aspect, the seller, while listing the collectible, can either present the value given by the appraiser or any other self-determined price, wherein when the value given by the appraiser is listed, an indication indicating that the value is given by the appraiser can be presented.
[00023] In another aspect, when the value of the collectible is higher than a defined threshold, selling price of the value can be hidden and communicated to the one or more potential buyers on request. In another aspect, the system can be configured to keep details of the seller as hidden till conclusion of the sale of the collectible. In another aspect, the system can enable the seller to auction the collectible after listing the minimum price to the value associated by the appraiser. In another aspect, the system can display credentials of the appraiser to the seller and/or the buyer.
[00024] The present disclosure further relates to a method for trading a collectible of a seller, said method comprising the steps of grading and associating a value to the collectible based on evaluation of the collectible by an appraiser, and wherein the collectible is owned by seller of the collectible; and listing the collectible along with the grade issued by the appraiser and the associated value for presentation to one or more potential buyers of the collectible, wherein the listing and trading module is further configured to enable at least one buyer of the one or more potential buyers to purchase or auction for the collectible.
[00025] In an aspect, the proposed system enables one or more collectibles to be listed on a user interface (such as a web interface or mobile application or any other configured interface), wherein selling price of a collectible being listed can be automatically hidden by proposed system if the selling price is above a pre-determined threshold.
[00026] In another aspect, a buyer seeking to buy an antique whose selling price is below pre-determined threshold price can be enabled to buy the antique using an e-commerce based transaction means such as online transaction or cash on delivery or any other known payment means.
[00027] In an aspect, in case a potential buyer shows interest in an item with no selling price shown, proposed system can enable the buyer to get the selling price on his e-mail id and
7
further complete the purchase, said purchase involving steps of physical inspection of the item, concluding sale via normal e-commerce channels (such as banking channels) and advise and payment of any taxes incurred by any party. For physical inspection, proposed system can book a time slot for the same by coordinating between the buyer and the seller. In an aspect, at his/her option/discretion, buyer can remove step of physical inspection.
[00028] In an aspect, the proposed system can enable a seller to compute/determine the value and significance of a collectible he/she has, and provide him a market place. For this purpose, the collectible can be provided a grading and a valuation either automatically by proposed system or incorporating additional inputs from expert appraisers. This can be of particular use and interest to people who are not professional antique traders but have antiques at home of which they do not know market value and significance, neither do they have access to an appropriate market place to sell their antiques. Thus, unlike other trading platforms where it is very easy for a buyer to get cheated with fake and no value items and likewise, for an inexperienced seller, to sell his antique much below its optimal price, proposed system assures genuineness of transactions.
[00029] In another aspect, a seller wanting his/her item to be graded and rated can request for same using proposed system, wherein the proposed system can provide such ratings using technology as well as expert services. Stickers representing such rating / grading as appropriate can be pasted on listing of said item at the system website.
[00030] In an aspect, sellers’ and/or buyers’ identities for transactions using proposed system can be hidden.
[00031] Using the proposed system, such people can sell their antiques to hobby lovers as well as collectors etc. to create wealth for themselves as well as tax revenues for the government. Proposed system can help a person declare his antiques in his wealth tax return with correct value on which to pay wealth tax. Sale of antiques takes place through proper banking channels and allows of payment of various taxes such as sales tax and income tax to appropriate government agencies.
[00032] In an aspect, proposed system can enable various discussion forums and knowledge portals where users can have their doubts and queries addressed by experts / appraisers in relevant field. Services of experts can be availed on a paid basis as well as free at their option.
8
[00033] In another aspect, the proposed system can provide educational programs and/or trainings for users so interested. In yet another aspect, proposed system can enable its users to earn additionally by referring other people to its website. In another aspect, the proposed system can organize web based exhibitions for trading in various collectibles where each collectible can be evaluated and appraised via experts, and can be listed on the interface provided by the proposed system along with the evaluated/appraised grading/value. Both buyers and sellers can be assured of genuineness and conditions of item as well as its fair value before taking a decision either to buy or sell an antique. Thus, an optimum and genuine trade can be held while avoiding a network of cheaters that often participate in such exhibitions whether offline or online.

[00099] In another aspect, listing and trading module 204 can enable a seller to generate a request that his item be graded/rated/valued by an expert appraiser, either before or after listing. Listing and trading module 204 can further send this request to grading and valuation module 206 that can take further actions as elaborated herein and provide a grading to the listed item.
[000100] In an aspect, listing and trading module 204 can display each item listed in form of a product card. Each product card can display any or a combination of item details as provided by a seller and grading of the item, determined as elaborated herein.
[000101] In another aspect, listing and trading module 204 can enable a scrollable display of different product cards. Each product card can carry item details such as price, features, photos and gradings where available.
[000102] In an aspect, listing and trading module 204 can enable a user to make a scrollable display of product cards according to different parameters that can be but not limited to categories, prices, era etc. Product cards per such parameters can be displayed and a user can see prices, gradings and other information as provided for different collectibles / antiques in relation to each other in a quick, appealing format. If the user is a buyer he can take buying decisions accordingly.
21
Grading and valuation module 206
[000103] In an aspect, grading and valuation module 206 can receive grading and valuation request (interchangeably termed only as grading request) from listing and trading module 204. As said above, such a request can be generated by a seller either before, during, or after listing his item. Upon receiving such request, grading and valuation module 206 can automatically ask relevant questions from seller depending upon category of item, get answers from the seller and pass the request with such information to an appropriate appraiser depending upon category of item. Such questions can be configured to elicit information from the seller regarding condition and authenticity of item he/she has listed.
[000104] In another aspect, grading and valuation of an item can depend upon various parameters including, but not limited to its condition, category, era, antiquity, historical background, rarity (similar items in existence) etc.
[000105] In an aspect, various categories of condition of a collectible can be, for example, brand new (could have shelf wear/torn packaging.), like new (still sealed in their package), mint (used but in perfect condition with no flaws), near mint (very few flaws/scratches/chips etc.), excellent condition (used sparingly with few flaws), very good (not outstanding, multiple flaws, maybe even a major flaw or two), good (lot of flaws), fair (lot of flaws), poor (lot of flaws, may not work, may not have a resalable value , may require some restoration) etc. Likewise, there can be categories of other parameters affecting grading of the item.
[000106] In another aspect, using grading and valuation module 206, the appraiser can ask further questions based upon his skills, knowledge and experience to seller of the item and get responses from the seller that the appraiser can further evaluate based upon his skills, knowledge and experience. Such questions can be configured to elicit further information from the seller regarding condition and authenticity of item he/she has listed. Considering seller’s responses to automatically asked questions as well as the seller’s responses to appraiser’s questions based upon the appraiser’s skills, knowledge and experience, grading and valuation module 206 can automatically evaluate all responses and can automatically allocate a grading and a valuation to the item or can enable the appraiser to allocate a grading and a valuation to the item.
[000107] In an aspect, the appraiser’s services can be provided free or on a chargeable basis to the seller. Grading and valuation module 206 can advise such details to the seller and if ona chargeable basis, can enable payment of appraiser’s charges using techniques known in the art.
22
[000108] In an aspect, grading and valuation module 206can automatically associate a sticker with listing of an item at proposed system’s website, said sticker indicating thegrading allocated to the item by any or a combination of the appraiser or automatically by the system. The associated sticker can be displayed along with the item at the system’s website.
[000109] In an exemplary embodiment, for an item belonging to chinaware category, grading and valuation module 206 can send grading request to an appraiser expert in chinaware. Likewise, for a grading request for an item belonging to Faberge eggs category, grading and valuation module 206 can send the grading request to a Faberge eggs appraiser.
[000110] In another aspect, after the concerned appraiser has evaluated an item whose grading request was received by him, grading and valuation module 206 can enable him to allocate a sticker representing his rating /grading to the item and then send this sticker to users module 202 that can associate the said sticker with listing of the item at proposed system’s website. Any other user can view the associated sticker to know the item’s grading.
[000111] In an exemplary embodiment, for an item graded in “Mint condition” by its appraiser, grading and valuation module 206 can associate a “Mint condition” sticker with listing of the item at proposed system’s website.
[000112] In another exemplary embodiment, for an item graded in “Excellent condition” by its appraiser, grading and valuation module 206 can associate a “Excellent Condition” sticker with listing of the item at proposed system’s website.
[000113] As elaborated above, grading and valuation module 206 can automatically evaluate all responses and can automatically allocate a grading and a valuation to the item or can enable the appraiser to allocate a grading and a valuation to the item. This can enable the seller to set an optimum selling price of his item. In another aspect, grading and valuation module 206 can enable only grading of item to be associated with sticker and not its valuation. In this way, the item’s valuation can remain only with the seller and not be displayed publicly. In an aspect, the seller can, if he so desires, add a selling price to his listed item in accordance with its valuation so that only relevant buyers attempt a purchase. In yet another aspect, the seller can, as already elaborated, create an auction for the item, taking minimum selling price to be the valuation of the item. It can be readily appreciated that there can be numerous possibilities on how seller uses the valuation of the item and all such possibilities are part of the present disclosure.
23
[000114] In this fashion, proposed system can enable a seller to know value and condition / significance of antiques he/she has, while at the same time providing him a market place for such antiques. At the same time, potential buyers can be assured of condition and authenticity of an item listed by a seller. This can be of particular use and interest to people who are not professional antique traders but have antiques at home of which they do not know market value and significance, neither do they have access to an appropriate market place to sell their antiques. Using proposed system, such people can sell their antiques to hobby lovers as well as collectors etc. to create wealth for themselves as well as tax revenues for the government, thereby converting their “waste” items into saleable assets. At the same time, buyers can be assured of genuineness and condition of item they are thinking of buying.
[000115] It would appreciated that along with a subjective assessment of an article through a grade/rating, it is very much possible for the appraiser also to be requested to associate a defined value in monetary terms that he feels to be fit for the article in context.
Forums and experts module 208
[000116] In an aspect, using forums and experts module 208, system administrator(s) of the proposed system can create one or more discussion forums in which users of proposed system can share their knowledge and experience, besides having their doubts and queries answered by others more knowledgeable in doubt/query at hand. In an exemplary embodiment, a user can ask for history books pertaining to an antique that can then be provided to him by another user, on basis of which the antique’s significance and value can be properly assessed. In this fashion, proposed system can enable skill development and learning of its users- whether buyers or sellers.
[000117] In an aspect, appraisers (also termed as industry experts herein) can also take part in the various forums either on their own or upon invitation by a user / system administrator. An appraiser can be nominated as moderator by system administrator of a discussion forum on the appraiser’s field of specialty, thereby making available a high level of skill, knowledge and experience to all forum members.
[000118] In an aspect, forums and experts module 208 can enable a knowledge portal that can be accessed by all users as well as appraisers and enable mutual interactions amongst all these wherein they can share their wisdom along with history of the rarest antiques. Short
24
profiles of various appraisers can be displayed and any user can get through knowledge on collectibles / antiques/ items of interest to him by connecting to relevant industry experts.
[000119] In another aspect, forums and experts module 208 can enable paid services of appraisers as well. In this service, profiles of various appraisers can carry rates for their services, a user can send his specific query along with all details available with him to an appraiser, the appraiser can revert with a quote for resolving queries to the user. If the user accepts his charges, forums and experts module 208 can enable him to pay the same to the appraiser and thereafter the appraiser can resolve his query.
[000120] In an aspect, forums and experts module 208 can enable services of appraisers to predict future value of present /near present items and not only the present value of antiques. In an exemplary embodiment, a user may have a special edition coin released only five years ago and he may be interested in knowing its possible value fifty years hence.
Certification module 210
[000121] In an aspect, module 210 can enable proposed system’s administrator(s) to provide various educational programs to users so interested. Content of such courses can be distributed online and successful participants can be provided certificates that can help them in gaining useful employment, besides gaining technical knowledge of various items, techniques and technologies therein etc.
[000122] In another aspect, certification module 210 can automatically put appropriate certification stickers on profile of such user’s who have completed corresponding certification programs
[000123] Presently, such courses are offered only via foreign institutions and colleges that charge high fees for people to earn a degree / certificate qualifying them as an antique expert. Being web enabled with global availability at all times, proposed system can offer such educational programs at very low cost. People already in sale / purchase of antiques can develop their knowledge further and with little further efforts can make their trading a regular profession. In this fashion, a new pool of skilled resources in a field where none / few exist presently can be created.
Referrals module 212
[000124] In an aspect, referrals module 212 can enable users of proposed system to earn additional revenue by referring/ encouraging other people to register with and use the proposed
25
system and thereby earning referral fees. Such people can be buyers or sellers (or both – viz traders).
[000125] In an aspect, the referral fee can include, but not limited to, any or a combination of one-time referral fee, a fixed referral fee depending upon percentage of revenue generated by proposed system through the referee, as sliding scale referral fee depending upon percentage of slabs of revenue generated by proposed system through the referee during a pre-determined time period, and the like.
Exhibitions module 214
[000126] In an aspect, exhibitions module 214enables proposed system to organize web-based exhibitions for sales of collectibles and antiques as elaborated herein. Each item listed can be evaluated and appraised via experts and listing provided with stickers accordingly. Both buyers and sellers can be assured of genuineness and condition of item as well as its fair value before taking a decision either to buy or sell an antique. In this way, optimum and genuine trade can be held.
[000127] This can avoid a network of expert cheaters from preying upon inexperienced and less knowledgeable buyers and sellers wherein an inexperienced seller can sell his item at a much lower than optimum price and a buyer can buy a item at a much higher than optimum price.
[000128] Simultaneously, exhibitions module 214 can enable exhibitions to be held in compliance with legal requirements, including that of local as well as global taxation.
Interfaces module 216
[000129] In an aspect interfaces module 216 can provide various interfaces for operation of proposed system.
