BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Document US 2004/0017331, US 2004/0223726 and US 2007/0200837 indicate
the concept of coupling a USB monitor with electronic devices via USB interface.
These documents also disclose the method of connecting the USB monitor with
the external electronic devices without the need of a PC to display the streaming
audio / video data. However, the known devices cannot cater to multiple USB
streams which can be simultaneously displayed / rendered in the USB monitor.
Document US 2004/0017333 Al relates to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) display
unit which consists of video decoder, a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)
controller system, and a display monitor. The USB display unit includes video
decoders and controllers to accept and display video data from a first source (a
PC) via a USB interface and a second source (directly streaming audio / video
content source) via RCA jack. Further, the patent application mentions providing
the streaming content directly to the USB interface provided a D/A converter is
present in the output circuit. Moreover, the patent application discloses scaling
of images / video displayed on the display.
-4-
Document US 2004/0223726 Al discloses a display apparatus for storing for a
broadcasting, or a video and / or an audio signal in an external storage medium
and for reproducing signals from the external storage medium. The apparatus
comprises a receiving processor for receiving an audio / video signal, a controller
for storing the received audio / video signal using the receiving processor in an
external storage medium, reproducing it when required, and an output unit for
outputting the reproduced audio / video signal.
Document US 2007 / 0200837 Al provides a display device comprising a
communication controller coupled to a first connector for transmitting the
addressed data consisting of display data. A controller receives the display data
for generating video signals. A display unit receives this video signal and
displays the video signal. The video signals comprise a color signal, a vertical
sync signal and a horizontal sync signal. The communication controller can be
further coupled to a second connector implemented as USB, Bluetooth, 1394, or
a local area network connector for transmitting data therethrough.
-5-
The document discloses the method of connecting the display device to
electronic devices via USB connectors. In this patent application, the electronic
devices may be any electronic device (not limited to a PC). The various
controllers in the display device are responsible for producing the output on the
display unit.
The method of interfacing the electronic devices to the display device via USB
interface without the use of a graphic card is explicitly mentioned in this
document. However, the process of obtaining multiple images on the same
display unit and the process of storing the video / audio data inside the display
device are not mentioned in this document.
There was therefore, a need for a display device for multiple streaming of data /
images on a USB monitor without the need for a computer or PC.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows in block diagram form the basic
structure of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a flow chart showing the operational
method of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The basic structure of the present invention has been illustrated in Figure 1 in
block diagram form. Multiple streaming data from the audio / video / image
devices represented by reference numeral 1, are sent to the display device which
can be a USB monitor. The multiple streaming data can be decoded inside the
-8-
USB monitor by an appropriate decoder represented by block 2 and gets
displayed in the monitor in the required location which is represented by block 3.
Multiple sources represented by block 1 can be played simultaneously through
multiple USB interfaces and rendered in the same monitor at different locations.
The USB monitor which acts as the display device is provided with the required
USB interfaces and can work without the aid of a digital video interface (DVI) or
a video graphic adaptor (VGA).
The USB output from the USB sources, like, video camera, digital still camera,
audio devices with USB interfaces, USB television tuner, etc., and similar other
devices is given to the display device / USB monitor and is directly displayed in
the monitor with USB interface, without a need for a PC. The data from multiple
USB streams can be simultaneously displayed on the monitor in different portions
of the screen of the display device.
The images can also be played from a USB memory stick and shown directly into
the monitor independently of a PC along with or independent of the streaming
sources.
-9-
Figure 2 shows the operational method of the present invention in the form of a
flow chart. A plurality of USB sources / multiple streaming devices with USB
interfaces are connected to the USB ports of a display device like a USB monitor
in the USB streaming mode. The streaming data from the USB source is
received at the display device and if the streaming data is encoded, the data is
selectively decoded using appropriate decoder depending on the encoding format
of the data received. The received data from the USB ports are decoded
according to encoding format of the received data. The received decoded data /
images / videos are rendered in different places of the screen of the display
device simultaneously.
The image / video is displayed in the given location of the monitor. The audio
data can be played after decoding with the aid of an appropriate decoder
through speakers provided in the monitor.
For multiple devices giving more than one image / video, it will be displayed in
the appropriate portion of the screen.
The display of the video photograph from a digital camera can be played along
with an audio stream streaming from an audio device at the same time.
-10-
The advantage of the present invention is that the USB monitor can be used to
display the video / images from multiple sources independent of the PC. Multiple
streaming sources can be rendered on the same USB display system at the same
time. The invention can be extended to render television streams, audio, video,
still images etc. Scaling of the images (zooming in / zooming out) video etc can
be done inside the display device for the streaming inputs (user preferences).
The method of the present invention can be extended further for displaying of
streaming data / images on other display devices.
It can also be extended to monitors with Ethernet, WIFI, Bluetooth and other
wired / wireless interfaces.
