[001] DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[002] The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:

[003] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[004] The present invention relates to an intelligent system and method for recommending broadcast content by a user to the contacts in his contact list based on the preference of users in the contact list. More particularly, the invention helps in connecting the broadcast media and broadband media, particularly social media networks for better presentation of targeted advertisement to reach the potential customer without causing any privacy implications to the consumers or users.

[005] BACK GROUND OF INVENTION

[006] Nowadays, it is common to have at least one television in each household. Television offers a wide range of valuable programs with interesting and broad content and it serves to fulfill needs in terms of entertainment and knowledge. Hence, television is an integral and vital medium today and continues to have a strong influence for many years to come.

[007] A commercial advertisement on television ranging in duration from a few seconds to several minutes is produced and paid for by a company or an organization, which conveys a message, typically to market a product or service. Advertising revenues provide a significant portion of the funding for most of television networks. In addition to commercial advertisements for others, television networks itself will advertise their products and services like playing trailer of upcoming movie or serial and services like video on demand.

[008] Generally the people who eventually watch a television advertisement are not the potential consumers. So objective of advanced advertisement is to target the specific potential consumer or consumer groups Delivering advertisement to potential consumers based on collection of personal data and analysis of traits can be considered as one of such advanced advertisement technology. However, people take issue with the privacy implications associated with such techniques. To know which advertisement to deliver, marketers and advertisement networks, collect data from search history, online shopping portals and social media networks, track browsing history and collect purchase details from shopping centers.

[009] According to 'Socialnomics', a company analyzing social media, 90% of consumers trust peer recommendations on products or TV programs. Another observation by 'Socialnomics' is that only 18% of traditional TV campaigns generate a positive ROI. Studies by 'The Telegraph' and 'Neilsonwire' show relevance of using social media networks for friends' recommendation. Sixty-five per cent of the 16-24 year-olds who were polled for the survey, listed talking to their friends via Facebook® and Twitter®, as their top leisure activity. In the survey it is also revealed that 50% of the population on a site talks about various television contents.

[010] The facts listed above suggest that there is a high demand for a better advanced advertisement technique which will take the advertisement to right consumer by someone trustworthy to a consumer. There arises a need for connecting broadcast media and broadband media, particularly social media networks for better presentation and targeted advertisement to reach the potential customer without causing any privacy implications to the consumers or users.

The network consists of several clients (101, 102, 103) where the system and method of broadcast content recommendation is implemented. These clients (101, 102, 103) interact with server (105) and transmit recommendations to various clients through a network (104). The server (105) uses various databases for transmitting and correlating the recommendations and the response of the recipients for the recommendation made by the system. In some embodiments, the server (105) may also connect to another server (106).

[030] In practice, there will be more number of servers and clients. In some situations, a server may perform the functions of all the two servers (105, 106) illustrated in the FIGURE 1. It may be also contemplated that server may be one or many. It is also possible that in case of a standalone application mode, a server may not exist and all the logic may be implemented in the client.

[031] The client (101) may include any device like a set top box(STB), television(TV), gaming devices, personal computer, Laptop, Mobile device, Tablet, or any other types of device that can support two way interactions with the user either using a graphical user interface or through other interface mechanisms like voice or gesture or video. Thus client (101) may be any device that is capable of displaying or receiving the broadcast content and recommendation for a broadcast content.

[032] In some cases all or part of the server configurations may be running on the client (101). In some cases, the client (101) may connect to multiple servers during the process of transmitting broadcast recommendations or while receiving broadcast recommendations from the system. In certain scenario, the client (101) may perform the functions of server or server may perform client functions.

[033] The above mentioned functions may be part of one server or several servers and each server may implement the functionalities of others. It may be possible that any of the server may be implemented using a cluster of servers involving two or more separate devices with all the other associated devices like load balancer, firewall, routers etc.

[034] Network (104) may include for example a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN), a Wide Local Area Network (WLAN), Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN), Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN), a telephone network, such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), an intranet, the Internet, a memory device, or a combination of networks. The network (104) may be wired, wireless, optical, or any other information transmission mechanisms.

[035] The broadcast content is categorically stored in the server database along with their corresponding metadata for facilitating the recommendation of the broadcast content. The broadcast content is categorized according to the genre in which they belong. The system provides facility to transmit recommendation to the user's contact either in a broadcast media or in a social network media or in both media. The system according to an embodiment allows the user to view all the recommendations done by all the contacts in his contact list. The broadcast content may be a promotional trailer of an upcoming program or an advertisement of a product or a Video on Demand. All the user activities are tracked by the system to provide a less error prone broad cast content recommendation system.

[036] FIGURE 2 illustrates a system block diagram for broadcast content recommendation by a user watching the broadcast content in accordance with an embodiment of the invention. The system (200) includes a content recommendation module (202), a recommendation managing module (204). The content recommendation module (202) is responsible for transmitting a recommendation regarding a particular broadcast content to the contacts in the contact list of the user based on user input. The recommendation managing module (204) presents the recommendation of the broadcast content to at least one contact. The recommendation managing module (204) is further responsible for categorizing the broadcast content based on a selection option opted by a contact. The selection option is selected from a list containing plurality of selection options. The system provides the subsequent recommendations of broadcast content to the contact based on the selection option chosen by the contact for prior recommendations.

[037] The system (200) also includes a profile managing module (206) that manages profile contacts based on a behavior history associated with the contact. The behavior history includes at least one behavior pattern of the contact to the broadcast content recommendation. The profile managing module (206) is also responsible for collecting at least one contact from a contact list in a social network or from other sources to identify the user's contacts. The profile managing module (206) manages the profile of the users which is stored in a server of the system for each and every user of the system. The profile managing module (206) may have a social network interface to facilitate retrieval of the contact details of a user from the social network. The user profile is updated depending upon user's behavior pattern.

[038] According to an embodiment of the present invention a user who is watching a broadcast content may transmit a recommendation to a contact in his contact list. The contact list is created by retrieving the user's contacts from the social network. An option is provided to the user to add more friends by their choice. The profile managing module (206) stores and maintains the profile of the contacts in the contact list of the user. The recommendation may be transmitted by the content recommendation module (202) by pressing a key in the system or by selecting an option from the menu. Once the user selects the recommendation option then the user will be shown a list of contacts to which the user may transmit a recommendation for the broadcast content.

[039] The broadcast content is categorically stored in the server along with their corresponding metadata for facilitating the recommendation of the broadcast content. The content database also stores the time frame, program number and frequency along with other metadata such as a product site or other product information which is required for the recommendation. Once the user selects recommendation then the system may transmit the content key of the broadcast content for recommendation along with the time stamp and source identification data in order to retrieve metadata from the content server. As part of the system a database with a look-up table may be hosted to support converting relative time of the program being played and corresponding advertisement or content. The advertisement details may include information such as a category of product/service, URL to get more information about the product or service, a web portal to purchase etc. In the case of advertisement of an upcoming program, the details may include scheduled time of the program, channel details etc so that the recipient may quickly switch to the respective channel. For services offered by television network provider such as Video on Demand (VoD), quick links will be created at recipient's set top box to consume the recommended VoD content.

[040] The system provides facility to transmit recommendation to the user's contact either in broadcast media or in social network media or in both media. The recommendation managing module (204) according to an embodiment allows the user to view all the recommendations done by all the contacts in his/her contact list.

[041] According to another embodiment of the present invention when a user watches a particular broadcast content then the user is shown a pop up which shows the contacts in the user's contact list. The contacts in the user's contact list may be those who are interested in receiving a recommendation for that broadcast content. The interest of the contacts is determined based on their behavior history by checking the prior behavior pattern to such category of broadcast recommendation.

[042] According to an embodiment of the present invention the plurality of selection options correspond to a viewing preference for the broadcast content recommended to the contact and activity preferences for the broadcast content recommended to the user. When a contact of a user receives a recommendation corresponding to broadcast content then the recipient contact is provided with plurality of viewing preferences. The recipient contact is provided with the capability of deciding whether to receive such recommendation in the future from other users for the same product or not to receive recommendation in the future for the same product or same category of broadcast content. The user's of the system is also provided with a provision to decide the set of contact's from whom the user wants to receive recommendation. The recipients may also block a particular user who recommends a broadcast content. If the recipient blocks the user then the user may not be able to send any recommendation in future.

[043] The system (200) also includes an incentive module (208) responsible for allocating credits to the user and to the recipient of the user recommendation. The incentive module (208) tracks the profile of the users based on their conduct to the recommendations received in order to make decision on allocating the credits.

[044] In an embodiment of the invention the recipient of the broadcast recommendation is provided with an activity preference such as "Buy now" or "Buy later" if the recommendation relates to a product advertisement. If the recipient selects to choose "Buy now" option then purchase details for that particular content gets displayed and user may buy the product by making the necessary payment. Once the user buys the products, the profile of the recipient as well as the user who recommends that product gets updated about the purchase details. Based on these profile updates the incentive module (208) may determine the credits for the user as well as the recipient.

[045] In another embodiment of the invention the recipient of the broadcast recommendation is provided with an activity preference option for a broadcast content recommendation related to scheduling programs then the activity preference options may be as "Schedule now" and "Schedule later". Here the scheduling program may be a trailer of an upcoming program. If the recipient selects to choose "Schedule now" option then he is taken to the program guide for scheduling the program straight away. The recipient is also allowed to select an option "Schedule later" where the user may be alerted later by the system to schedule the program. Once the user schedules and watches the program then the profile of the recipient as well as the user who recommends that program gets updated about the viewing details. Based on these profile details incentive module may determine the credits for the user as well as the recipient.

[046] According to an embodiment of the invention the recipient of the broadcast content recommendation is provided with an activity preference option such as "Recommendation". If the recipient selects "Recommendation" option then the recipient may be directed to the recommendation page from where the recipient of the recommendation is facilitated to retransmit the recommendation to at least one contact in his contact list.

[047] According to another embodiment of the invention the recipient of the broadcast recommendation is provided with various viewing preferences such as "Like", "Don't like" and "Not this category". If the recipient selects "Like" option then the recipient receives future recommendation for the same broadcast content from his contacts. If the recipient selects "Don't like" option then the recipient won't receive any further recommendation for the same product form the same brand where the broadcast content is advertisement of a product. In case the broadcast content is "program schedule" then the recipient won't be recommended for scheduling of the program in future from any of the contacts in the contact list. If the recipient selects "Not this category" then the recipient won't be sent any broadcast content recommendation for the same category of product in case of advertisement of a product. Similarly in case of scheduling the program the recipient won't receive any further recommendation for scheduling the program of the same category form any of the contacts in his contact list.

[048] Based on the activity preference or viewing preference selection made by a recipient, behavior pattern of the recipient is determined. The profile of the user who recommended the broadcast content as well as the profile of the recipient is updated according to recipient's behavior pattern.

[049] According to an embodiment of the invention the recommendation managing module (204) is configured to present the recommendation sent by a user as a notification on a user interface displayed on the display device of the recipient of recommendation.

[050] FIGURE 3 illustrates an exemplary user interface of recommendation of a broadcast content by a user where the broadcast content is an advertisement of a product in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
