Detailed Description of the invention:
The above, and the other objects, features & advantages of invention will become apparent from following description read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Refereeing to figure 1, it shows system for retrieving a legal data from a database containing legal information in accordance to present invention. As shown in figure 1 system for legal data retrieval comprises at least one input device for inputting a request by the user, a plurality of databases containing legal information and at least one server at the service provider side.
The input device comprises processing circuit for executing the codes being required for working of said input device, memory unit for storing said codes, keyboard for
inputting the request by user and displaying means to display the request made by user and the information obtained by the user from databases through said server.
6
A Plurality of databases contains the legal information. These databases include the judgments of various Indian courts. These may include database containing of Supreme Court judgments, database containing of High court judgments, database containing of Lower court judgments, database containing of all courts judgments. The database may include various legal acts with amendments for e.g. The Indian Contract Act, Indian Penal Code, and The constitution of India etc.
The input devices and all databases are connected to the server of the service provider through communication media. The communication media may include but not limited to telephone lines, cable lines, communication buses and satellite transmission. The system of the present invention may include more than one server. Each server consists of processor unit for processing a request made by the user and memory unit. The memory unit is coupled with the processing unit. The memory unit stores user database, search engine, user interface means and means for modifying the databases containing legal information and user database.
The user database consists of the all information relating to users. It includes the user name and his Identification like password. Hence when he will enter his user name and password and if it matches with the data given in user database the user is the authenticated user and eligible for retrieving the data.
The search engine provides both simple search as well as advanced search. The features of simple and advanced search will be discussed later. The search engine provides user to search the information on the basis of various criteria. These criteria include but not limited to Nature of court, Honorable Judge's name, Advocate's name, Case Number, Judgment date, Dates of the proceedings, Party Name, Advance Search and Keywords.
The user interface means helps user define searches for databases. The technique includes one or more browser compatible applets, WebPages templates, user
7
interface elements, objects or control features or other programmatic objects or structures. Also there is a provision in the system to modify the user database and the databases containing legal information. This is taken care by means for modifying the databases. There are provisions for adding, deleting and editing of the data in the databases. This provisions are to keep the databases updated with the recent information.
Now refereeing to figures 2 to 8 shows the detailed system flow diagram in accordance to present invention. First of all it consists of login block being used by the user for retrieving the data or by the service provider to update the data in the databases. Hence this login block is divided in to two blocks i.e. search for user and data entry for service provider.
Now we will see the data entry block in details with the help of figures 3 to 7. The data entry block is again divided into four different kinds of blocks called add, delete, view and edit blocks. Addition block facilitates service provider to add the information into databases for keeping it updated. Deletion block facilitates service provider to delete the information from the database. For example if user want to discontinue the service provided by the service provider then in such condition name of that user will be deleted from the user database. View block facilitates the user to see the information which he is requested for on the displaying means. Edit block facilitates service provider to edit/modify the data from databases. Due to this service provider get opportunity to correct the errors.
Now referring to figure 8, it shows the search block in details. The system of the present invention provides both simple as well as advanced search. User can use any search as per his need.
Now we will see how data/information is retrieved from the plurality of database using the system of the present invention. This method is well illustrated by the flowcharts shown in figures 9 to 15. As shown in figure 9 firstly the user who wants
8
the information has to make a request through the input means. For that purpose he has to first log in into the server of the service provider. For that user first enter his user name and identification code through input means. Then service provider checks for the validity of the user. If the name and code of the user matches with the data given in user database server allows the user to access the databases and if user found invalid it displays the same on the displaying means and disallow the user to further access. Then by using search engine user can search for the data by any of the search method i.e. either simple or advanced. Both are given in figures 14 and 15 respectively. Once the search engine found the appropriate data, same is fetched from the databases and displayed on the display.
Also system facilitates the service provider to add, delete and edit the databases as discussed by us above. Such methods are given in form of flowcharts in figures 10, 11 and 13 respectively. As shown in figure 10 for addition service provider has to first enter the information. Then said information is checked by the means for modifying the databases. If it found valid then only service provider can add the new data and update the database. For deletion also means for modifying data first ask for the confirmation of the deletion once it get confirmed by the service provider the information/data is deleted from the databases. For edition also means for modifying data facilitates the service provider to edit the data.
Industrial Applicability:
Document retrieval systems find legal information to given criteria by matching text
records (documents) against user queries, as opposed to expert systems that answer
questions by inferring over a logical knowledge database. A document retrieval
system performs the following two tasks:
i. Find relevant legal documents to user queries
ii. Evaluate the matching results and sort them according to relevance.
