, Description:TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter relates to a saddle type vehicle, and more particularly, the present subject matter relates to a tail cover assembly for a saddle type vehicle. The present application is a patent of addition of application number 202041008453.

BACKGROUND

[0002] Conventionally, a saddle type vehicle includes a vehicle body frame including a main frame extending obliquely rearward and downward from a head pipe, and a seat frame extending rearward from the main frame and supporting a riding seat and a pillion seat, wherein a front wheel is supported by a front portion of the vehicle body frame via a front fork, and a rear wheel is supported by a rear portion of the vehicle body frame via a swing arm. The rear portion of the vehicle is covered by a tail cover assembly which is assembled to a rear end of the body frame. Typically, the tail cover assembly of the saddle type vehicle has a plurality of tail covers, namely a left tail cover and a right tail cover, giving an integrated appearance, when viewed from the top of the vehicle. The saddle type vehicle also includes, a cargo type two wheeled vehicle, in which the pillion seat is generally removed and replaced by a carrier, which usually extends from the pillion seat region to the rear end of the plurality of tail covers. Thus, in a saddle type cargo vehicle the plurality of tail covers remain as underlying parts below the carrier.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[00011] In a two-wheeled vehicle comprising of a split seat assembly, often a single driver seat is provided for the purpose of the driver and a separate single pillion rider seat is provided for the pillion rider. For the ease of transportation of light weight goods, immediate medical aid and delivery services, by means of motorized two wheelers, saddle type vehicle are used, in which the pillion seat is replaced or vehicle rear is additionally provided with a carrier.
[00012] In general, a saddle type vehicle, particularly a saddle type cargo vehicle, has a tail cover assembly comprising a plurality of tail covers namely left tail cover and right tail cover. The tail cover assembly is disposed towards the rear side of the vehicle. A frame provides mounting and skeletal support to the vehicle. The tail cover assembly is adapted to be mounted on a rear end of the frame, below the pillion seat or the mounted carrier. The carrier is mounted on the frame with fastening members, on which cargo can be mounted and the space below the carrier is shielded by the tail cover.
[00013] Use of the plurality of tail covers instead of a single tail cover enables easy manufacturing and assembling of the tail cover assembly. However, due to variations during manufacture and misalignment during assembly, gaps tend to occur between the plurality of tail covers or between one or more of the plurality of tail covers and the frame of the vehicle. Along with it over the period of time, plurality of tail covers tends to split further and this leads to gap creation in between the left tail cover and right tail cover forming visible split part making the fit and finish of the tail cover assembly poor. Such undesirable gaps also lead to potential vibration issues like rattling sound etc. Additionally, any accidental dropping of objects being carried or spillage below the carrier can lead to damage of critical vehicle systems as well as risk of type slippage owing to direct spillage onto the tyre rolling surface during riding. Also, in case of storage of heavy items, the items stored on known designs tend to get displaced owing to vehicle acceleration and jerk motion especially during starting of the vehicle. Such movement is also highly undesirable for safe carrying of the goods since such displacement leads to adverse impact on the handling behaviour and safety of the vehicle and its rider.
[00014] Gaps in any part of the tail cover assembly are disadvantageous as it allows ingress of dust, dirt and water through gaps in course of usage of the vehicle. Such an unwanted entry of dirt, dust and water results in accumulation of the same in areas inaccessible for cleaning or vacuuming.
[00015] Besides, components that are housed in the inner part of the tail cover assembly suffer from damage, failure and reduced lifetime due to constant exposure to and accumulation of contaminants. Mud or water is splashed up tangentially by the rear wheel striking the plurality of tail covers of which the tail cover assembly is comprised. Such tangential striking results into water, dirt and dust enter through the gaps present with force. Such a propelled contaminant entry drastically increases the volume of dirt, dust and water to which the inner vehicle systems & critical parts covered by tail cover assembly are exposed to, in the event of gaps being formed due to misalignment in assembly of the plurality of tail covers to the rear end of the main frame.
[00016] Water and mud splashed up tangentially by the rear wheel strikes the lower side of the vehicle with a certain amount of force, thereby vastly increasing the amount of contaminants entering through gaps exposed on the lower side of the tail cover assembly and accumulating in inner parts of the tail cover assembly. The inner parts of the tail cover assembly are inaccessible for cleaning or removal of contaminants without having to remove at least one of the plurality of tail covers of which the tail cover assembly is comprised, making it highly unserviceable and inconvenient for maintenance of the two-wheeled vehicle, even so in the case of a saddle type cargo vehicle.
[00017] Contaminant entry or accumulation in the inner areas of the two-wheeled vehicle requiring protection, adversely affects the functioning capabilities of components housed in the inner part of the tail cover assembly. Ingress of contaminants and their subsequent accumulation reduces lifetime of the components leading to sudden failures of the components apart from causing immediate failure and damage of sensitive components. Failure of vital components like a battery is not merely a disadvantage but could prove hazardous as well, especially when the two-wheeled vehicle is in running condition. Therefore, there is a need to provide a tail cover assembly, which does not have undesirable gaps, overcomes all problems cited above, one that prevents entry of contaminants and addresses other problems of known arts. Typically, tail cover assembly includes plurality of tail covers, namely a left tail cover and a right tail cover. These parts are usually painted and fitted onto the vehicle. Though these painted parts are appealing, but once the carrier is mounted above them, a large portion of the painted parts, which directly come under the carrier, tend to remain shielded with the loaded carrier from the top and unnoticed from the sides, making the painting of such parts redundant. Therefore, there is a need of reduction of painted parts while not compromising with the aesthetic appeal and fit and finish of the tail cover assembly.
[00018] Apart from the mentioned problems, another difficulty arises with the availability as well as accessibility of an auxiliary storage space for storing rider’s personal belongings especially in saddle type cargo vehicle. Usually in motorized two wheelers auxiliary storage space is provided below the pillion seat, which is generally detachable or removable. Unlike other two wheeler vehicles, a saddle type cargo vehicle has the disadvantage of lacking an accessible auxiliary storage space for documents, personal belongings or small accessories for the ease and convenience of the rider. The restriction on such auxiliary storage space is because of the constructional constraints of a saddle type cargo vehicle. As generally the space above the carrier is engaged by the mounting of the cargo; the space under left tail cover and right tail cover cannot be used as storage space, since it is sandwiched between the frame and the carrier and the usage of the space for storage would require dismantling of carrier and the tail cover assembly, any such dismantling makes the whole arrangement inconvenient and inaccessible for the rider, especially when the cargo is mounted on the carrier and; the rear end of the tail cover assembly also becomes inaccessible for mounting an additional storage compartment because of the mounting of the tail lamp on the left tail cover and right tail cover. There is a need to resolve this problem and provide a convenient and accessible auxiliary storage space even when the cargo is mounted on the carrier. Typically in known arts, additional storage space or carriage boxes are provided on the rear side of the vehicle which make the vehicle bulky. Vehicle layout is compromised thereby not achieving a compact vehicle layout.
[00019] Therefore, there exists a need to provide a tail cover assembly for a saddle type vehicle including a two- wheeled cargo vehicle, which has better fit and finish, improved reliability without undesirable vibrations, keeps the underlying parts safe and shielded from contaminants and thus eliminates possibility of environmental contamination, is cost effective and at the same time has an easily accessible auxiliary storage space which is convenient and safe for the rider even when the cargo is mounted on the carrier. The present invention discloses a tail cover assembly of a saddle type vehicle comprising a left tail cover, a right tail cover, a tail cover center top and a tail cover center bottom. The tail cover center top is mounted between the left tail cover and right tail cover. The tail cover center bottom is disposed between the left tail cover and right tail cover, below the tail cover center top. The left tail cover and the right tail cover are secured to the tail cover center top, on an upper end of the left tail cover and an upper end of the right tail cover and, secured to the tail cover center bottom, on a rear end of the left tail cover and a rear end of the right tail cover.
[00020] The tail cover center top is operable to bridge any gap which may form after assembly of the tail cover assembly on the vehicle or on any further usage between right tail cover and left tail cover upwardly. The tail cover center top is adapted to protect the vehicle from ingress of mud, dirt and water from top of the tail cover assembly. The tail cover center bottom is operable to bridge any gap which may form after assembly of the tail cover assembly on the vehicle or on any further usage between right tail cover and left tail cover downwardly.
[00021] As per an aspect of the present invention, the tail cover center bottom of the tail cover assembly extends rearwards with an upward inclination, operable to bridge any gap, between left tail cover and right tail cover, which may be formed after assembly of the tail cover assembly or on any further usage. More specifically, the tail cover center bottom is configured with a L shaped structure which extends rearwards with an upward inclination and then extends downwards towards the rear wheel. The tail cover center bottom is disposed directly above the rear wheel. The L- shaped profile of the tail cover center bottom is made in such a manner so as to receive & shield mud and water splashed up by the rear wheel on its outer face. The tail cover center bottom is adapted to protect the vehicle from ingress of mud, dirt and water, especially from mud or water splashed up tangentially by the rear wheel striking the plurality of tail covers. The tail cover design as per the present invention also eliminates any spillage from the carrier parts from falling directly onto the type surface as well as any vehicle system disposed thereat between the tail cover assembly and the tyre.
[00022] Thus, the present subject matter additionally provides a solution to the problem of water, dirt or dust entering through gaps formed between the pluralities of tail covers of the tail cover assembly of the vehicle.
[00023] As per another embodiment of the present invention, the tail cover center top of the tail cover assembly is a textured part, unlike the other painted parts, namely, tail cover center bottom, right tail cover and left tail cover. The textured tail cover center top reduces the overall vehicle’s painting cost by reducing the overall painted part surface area, making the present subject matter cost effective. Moreover, the textured part can be used to display different patterns such as high-visibility reflective strips, graphics and logos, making it further more cost effective.
[00024] As per an aspect of the present invention, the tail cover center top and tail cover center bottom of the tail cover assembly are textured parts, unlike the other painted parts, namely, right tail cover and left tail cover. The textured tail cover center top and tail cover center bottom reduces the overall vehicle’s painting cost by reducing the overall painted part surface area, making the present subject matter cost effective. As per yet another aspect of the present invention the tail cover center top comprises of atleast two portions, namely an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion have a longer length in vehicle length direction than the upper portion . The upper portion is positioned on the top of the lower portion such that the lower side outline of both the portion merge at left and right sides. Both the upper portion and the lower portion can be of any geometrical shape, such as trapezoidal shape. Moreover, the upper portion of the tail cover center top is configured with one or more humps that can be used to display different patterns such as high-visibility reflective strips, graphics and logos, making it further more cost effective and eye appealing. The humps are also effective in providing more sturdiness and strength to the tail cover. Additionally, the left and right side of the lower portion is configured with plurality of mounting provisions for mounting of right tail cover and left tail cover. The lower portion is provided with an elevated curved profile at the front side for matching with the profile of the seat thereby eliminating any undesirable gaps.
[00025] As per another aspect of the present invention, the tail cover center top and the tail cover center bottom are so aligned that the tail cover assembly is disposed rearward in an upwardly inclined direction. This rearward upward direction profile of the tail cover reduces any adverse effect of jerks caused due to a moment of inertia when the vehicle suddenly stops or starts to operate. The inclined configuration acts as a ramp to add to frictional resistance to free sliding movement of the goods thereby leading to better distribution of the inertia forces. Additionally, the tail cover center top and the tail cover center bottom is so configured to create a utility space t thereby effectively generating an auxiliary storage space between the tail cover center top and the tail cover center bottom for storing rider’s personal belongings. As per an aspect of the present invention, the auxiliary storage space is configured with a detachable opening enabled through at least one part of the tail cover assembly. As per an embodiment, the tail cover center bottom is operable detachably rearwardly and can be opened in rearward direction and closed in opposite direction. As per an additional embodiment, a lock set is provided on the left tail cover or right tail cover, to secure the storage space and make it theft proof. As per yet another embodiment , the upper section of the tail cover center top has a provision of an opening which is closed with a humped lid for easy accessibility of the storage space.
[00026] As per an aspect of the present invention, a tail lamp is mounted on a rear fender of the vehicle, which is mounted on the body frame of the vehicle. The tail lamp mounted on the rear fender aids in ease of assembly of the tail cover center bottom, which is operable rearwardly as opposed to a tail lamp mounted on the tail cover assembly.
[00027] As per an aspect of the present invention, the auxiliary storage space is provided in the center of the tail cover center top, while the tail cover center bottom acts as the base of the storage space. The tail cover center top is operable upwardly and can be opened in outward direction. The auxiliary storage space is made convenient and accessible by providing a hinge mechanism for rotating the carrier, while the cargo box is mounted, along the vertical axis outward which in turn gives access to tail cover center top.
[00028] Therefore, the present invention addresses the drawbacks prevalent in the state of the art and provides a solution to the problem of providing a tail cover assembly with no visible gap restricting the entry of contaminants; less painted parts making the assembly cost effective; and with an auxiliary storage space which is accessible, convenient, stable and secure, aiding to the rider’s comfort of storing personal belongings etc. securely without compromising on the vehicle layout or the size of the vehicle.
[00029] The present invention also has the advantage of the tail cover center top holding the tail cover center bottom and the plurality of left tail cover and right tail cover at a uniform distance from each other, thereby, preventing the ends of the left tail cover and right tail cover from rubbing off due to constant friction between each other which also results in undesirable vibration rattling noise. Such design helps in preventing wear and tear of the parts of tail cover assembly which otherwise would occur due to constant friction between them. Such arrangement also has an additional advantage of ensuring uniformity of assembly of the plurality of tail covers of the tail cover assembly.
[00030] An embodiment of the present invention is described in further detail in conjunction with an embodiment of a saddle type vehicle along with the figures in the following description. The tail cover assembly comprises of a tail cover center top, tail cover center bottom, left tail cover and right tail cover. It is obvious to a person ordinarily skilled in the art that other embodiments of the present invention are possible within the scope of the same.

The one or more openings in the lid (604) helps in gripping the lid for ease of accessibility. Additionally, the lower portion (601) is provided with side skirt walls (601LH, 601RH) along the longitudinal periphery which are configured to have plurality of mounting provisions (605) for mounting of right tail cover and left tail cover. The lower portion (601) is provided with a laterally elevated curved profile (601F) at the front region for matching with the profile of the seat thereby eliminating any undesirable gaps. Furthermore, the rearmost region of the tail cover center top (203) is provided with a L shaped profile oriented substantially horizontally and facing downwards which helps to shield mud and water splashed up by the rear wheel on its outer face. The entire tail cover centre top (203) is so configured in the vehicle assembly condition so as to form a rearwardly upward incline when seen in a side view in a vehicle. As per an embodiment, the tail cover centre top (203) forms an angle in the range of 2 degrees to 20 degrees thereby giving a stable and secure holding means for the good being carried. As per an aspect of the present invention, angle lower than 2 degrees can lead to unstable slip of the goods owing to jerk and more than 20 degrees leads to vehicle handling instability owing to rise in centre of gravity of the goods. . The L- shaped profile is also configured with one or more mounting provisions for mounting of left and right tail covers (204,110). In an top view shown in Fig 6c, the tail cover centre top (203) is configured in a substantially trapezium shaped profiled wherein the base of the trapezoidal shape is disposed towards the front side of the vehicle.
