PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification particularly describes the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:

TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a testing apparatus for determining the velocity of air flow delivery by an air measuring device for a fan or blower.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a apparatus for accurately determining the air flow delivery for a fan according to guidelines set by Bureau of Indian standard (BIS) IS:555, within the least amount of time.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
A fan is used to create flow within air. Most fans are powered by electric motors, but other sources of power may be used, including hydraulic motors and internal combustion engines and solar power. A fan consists of a rotating arrangement of vanes or blades which act on the air. Typical applications of fans include climate control, personal comfort (e.g. by means of an electric table fan), etc.
Fans generally work on induction type motor which consists of a main winding and an auxiliary winding. A capacitor provides torque to the motor which operates the fan. There are number of tests to verify the optimal performance of a fan, depending on various parameters such as type, size, height, etc. of the fan. One of

the tests is performed to determine the velocity of the air delivered by the fan in Cubic meter/min. or /Hr, and is called the air delivery test.
With reference to the above-referenced tests, certain fan test standards have been prepared in order to establish a clearly defined test procedure that allows for comparison of different fan designs, and also allows for the independent verification of test data. Internationally recognized Standards such as BS848, ISO5801, and AMCA 210 etc. are highly prescriptive, and precisely specify test duct configurations, measurement procedures, measurement planes and instrumentation to be used. These laboratory tests need to be strictly conducted in accordance with the relevant Standard, in order for the test data to accurately reflect fan performance within the appropriate tolerances for efficiency, pressure and flow when tested in the defined configuration.
One of the tests for measuring the air delivery is prescribed by the Bureau of Indian standard (BIS) IS:555 procedure in which air flow delivery of a fan is determined as per guidelines given in the IS standard. This test uses an apparatus comprising a trolley and a platform to support the fan to be tested, such as a table. The trolley is mounted on a channel which is calibrated as per IS standard guidelines. A device for determining the air flow of the fan is mounted on the

trolley. The trolley and the platform supporting the fan and the air flow measuring device are placed opposing and facing each other so that the flow of the air delivered by the fan may be measured and determined by the air flow measuring device. The IS guideline provides specifications for maintaining the height of the air flow measuring device and fan placed on the table from the ground.
However, presently there are several disadvantages in the above-referenced apparatus for testing air flow delivery according to IS guidelines. First, the apparatus does not accommodate fans of varying dimensions. As a result the placement of the air flow measuring device and the fan to be tested maybe misaligned leading to inaccurate results regarding the optimal performance of the fan. This ultimately leads to customer dissatisfaction. Second, as the apparatus does not accommodate fans of varying dimensions, it has to be completely reconfigured for each test cycle depending upon the dimensions, such as the height of the fan. This leads to increased testing times and loss of productivity.
Accordingly, there is a need for a testing apparatus that adapts to fans of varying dimensions during the different testing cycles and provides accurate air delivery performance results in minimum testing time.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
An objective of the invention is to provide an apparatus for accurately determining the air flow delivery of a fan or blower as per the guidelines set by Bureau of Indian standard (BIS) IS:555.
Another objective of the present invention is to provide an apparatus that may be adapted to determine air flow delivery of fans of varying dimensions.
Yet another objective of the invention is to provide an apparatus that incorporates at least two measuring instruments for providing simultaneous readings of the fan and the air flow measurement device which reduces the cycle time of air flow delivery testing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a testing apparatus for determining air flow delivery comprising:
a. an adjustable table for supporting a fan i.e. an air delivery device; and
b. a trolley having a air flow measuring device fixedly attached to the trolley;
said adjustable table and the trolley are in a mutually opposing arrangement

with respect to each other for determining the air flow generated by the air delivery device.
Further, the invention provides, a testing apparatus wherein the adjustable table further comprises:
i. a top base for supporting a fan i.e. air delivery device; ii. a bottom base; and
iii. a screw jack system for adjusting at least one dimension of the adjustable table depending on the dimension of the air delivery device, while testing the air flow delivery.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
For the purposes of this invention, an air delivery device is a fan.
Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the prior art arrangement. An air delivery device (fan) is placed on a normal stand (15). In order to match its height with an air delivery measuring device such as an anemometer (12), packaging (16) of varying thicknesses (or heights) are used to account for crude adjustments in height. However, it does not provide linear or co-axial matching of the delivery of air from the fan to the anemometer.
Accordingly the present invention provides a testing apparatus for determining air flow delivery comprising an adjustable table (1) and a trolley (2).

Referring to Figure 2, the present invention provides an adjustable table (1) having top base (3) on which an air delivery device (4) (as shown in Figure 2) may be placed during the testing and a bottom base (5). The air delivery device may be, not limiting to, a fan, blower, etc. The adjustable table (1) has a screw jack assembly (6) with an outer casing (7) and a handle (8). The screw jack assembly (6) facilitates the vertical movement of the adjustable table (1) by rotating the handle (8) in order to adjust the size of the table (1), thereby adjusting the height of the top base (3). The size of the table (1) is adjusted depending upon the dimensions of the fan that is placed on the top base (3) during the testing of air flow delivery using the testing apparatus of the present invention. During the testing, the required height as per the Standard IS 555 can be maintained to provide accurate results. Further, the table (1) has a tie rod (9) connected to a first measuring instrument (10), such as not limiting to, a measuring scale. The first measuring instrument (10) may be used to measure the height of the fan placed on the top base (3) during testing.
Referring to figure 3, the trolley (2) comprises a second measuring instrument (11), such as not limiting to a measuring scale, measuring rod, etc. An air flow measuring device (12) connected fixedly to the second measuring instrument (11). The air flow measuring device (12) may be an anemometer and is fixedly

connected to the second measuring instrument (11) by means such as, not limiting to, a screw, etc. to facilitate accurate placement of the device (12) during the testing process with respect to the fan. The trolley (2) is placed on a calibrated channel (13) that provides a defined movement path to the trolley (2) while testing the air delivery. The channel (13) is calibrated as defined in IS 555 standard. Thus the trolley (2) simultaneously facilitates the measurement and movement of the distance of the air flow measurement device (12) with respect to the fan and the measurement and maintenance of the height of the air flow measuring device (12) from the ground.
In operation, a fan (4) whose air flow delivery performance is to be tested may be placed on the top base (3) of the adjustable table (1). The trolley (2) with the air flow measuring device (12) is placed in a mutually opposing arrangement in relation to the adjustable table (1). Depending upon the dimension of the fan (4), the height of the table (2) is then adjusted using the jack screw assembly (6) such that the fan (4) and the air flow measuring (12) are approximately at the same level. The height of the fan (4) may be measured by the first measuring instrument (10) on the adjustable table (1) to record the height of the fan (4) from the ground. Thus, during testing only the height of the fan (4) maybe adjusted with the aid of

the adjustable table (1), while the air flow measuring device (12) is kept at a fixed position on the trolley (2).
Thus, the testing apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in determining the air flow delivery of different fans with variable dimensions by adjusting the size of the adjustable table (1). Also, the presence of the first measuring instrument (10) on the adjustable table (1) and the second measuring instrument (11) on the trolley (2) allows the user to obtain simultaneous results relating to the height of the fan (5) and air flow measuring device (12) from the ground, significantly reducing the testing time.
Figure 4 illustrates a schematic view of the trolley mounted on a channel with anemometer. Reference numeral 14 refers to trolley wheels.
The present invention is intended to cover any modifications and variations that may be obvious to a person having ordinary skill in the art.
