2.This Invention relates to Thread protector for shells to prevent
the threads during shot blasting for shells or tubes.
3.Field Of Invention Prevention of threads damage due to
shot blasting or removing the burrs by metal erosion process.
^Background of the Invention with regards to the draw backs associated with present art -
The threading at the mouth portion of shell is carried out for the fitments of assemblies. The assemblies are fitted at the opening end of a shell by means of threaded joints. The hollow portion of the shell is carried out by machining process or metal removing process. For removing the stress concentration point or vortex formation point the inner surface requires the finishing process. The inner surface is made free from any materialdeformity and made smooth surface profile or contours.. High velocity shots are impinges on the surface removing the burrs and deformity of the surfaces. During process of metal erosion process by shot blasting or sand blasting process the threads are exposed to the metal erosion process. The threads at the mouth or openings are damaged due to high velocity shots or abrasive particles with higher temperature impinging.

5. Object of the Invention:-
1. To prevent the exposure of the threads from high velocity shots or
abrasive
particles impinging
2. The threads are protected by means of external protection made up of shots resisting material.
3. The threads protector should be of retrofitting type and can be used for number of cycles.
4. Thread protector should be easy to fit and remove with minimum time using the proper tool.
5. Failures of thread protector should not lead to accidents. It should be fail safe type without damaging the thread or without harming the persons working in the vicinity.
6. Material should be easily available and low cost.
6. Summary of the Invention: -
The new thread protector designed is a retrofitting type, which protects the threads exposure by means of external protection made up of shots resisting material. The threads are not exposed to the erosion process or shot blasting process or sand blasting process The threads are not exposed to the process hence preventing the threads from getting damaged.
7. Brief Description of the new thread protector: -
The newly invented design of thread protector consists of following features.
1. Upper part has the collar, Figure Number 1 shown as part (a)
2. Middle portion is a parallel cover to protect the threads, Figure Number 1 shown as part (b)
3. Lower part has the external threaded portion to match the existing internal threads. Figure Number 1 shown as part(c)

4. Total part has split vertically to collapse the circular protector to spiral shape so that the effective diameter will be reduced. Figure Number 1 shown as part (d)
5. There is a uniform slope with geometric shape at split ends up to the circular ribs to act as a guide for reduction of diameter or for the conversion from circular shape to the spiral shape Figure Number 1 shown as part (e)
6. The elastic property of the material should regain the circular shape after release from the tool.
7. To convert the circular shape to spiral shape the holes are provided inside surface with circular ribs. Figure Number 1 shown as part(f)
8. The holes in the circular ribs are used for collapsing the diameter for fitment and for removal from the shell using the proper tool.
9. The release from the tool the lower threads get locked in the internal threads protecting the entire threaded portion of the shell from shots or sand.
8. Detailed Description of the thread protector with reference to drawing:--
1. Upper part has the collar to prevent the retrofitting to fall inside. The collar matches with the top surface of the shell. Figure Number 1 shown as part (a)
2. Middle portion is a parallel cover to protect the threads. The outer diameter of the middle part is marginally less than tip diameter of the threads. Figure Number 1 shown as part (b)
3. Lower part has the external threaded portion to match the existing internal threads. The tip diameter of the external threads of thread protector is marginally less than the core diameter of the internal threads of shell. Figure Number 1 shown as part(c).
4. Total part has split vertically to collapse the circular protector to spiral shape so that the effective diameter will be reduced. The vertical gap of 0.20 mm or less than the diameter of shots is maintained so that the shots cannot enter during the process of shot blasting. Figure Number 1 shown as part (d)

5.. There is a uniform slope with geometric shape at split ends up to the circular ribs to act as a guide for reduction of diameter or for the conversion from circular shape to the spiral shape Figure Number 1 shown as part(e)
5. With reduced diameter the thread protector is pushed to the position and then released. The elastic property of the material will regain the circular shape of the protector and fixed into the internally threaded portion of shell. Circular Ribs at appropriate positions inside surface of protector are provided. Holes in the circular ribs are used to collapse the protector diameter using the proper tool. Figure Number 1 shown as part (f)
6. The holes are useful for holding the protector during fixing and removal of protector.
7. Locking in the threaded lower part of the protector of the shell and upper color ensure the total threads of the shell from exposing to the shots.
8. The assembly of the thread protector with the hollow threaded pipe or shell is shown in figure Number2.
9. Working Principal of Thread Protector: -
1 The thread protector is fitted by proper tool as shown in figure Number
2.The shot blasting process is carried out.
3. The thread protector is removed by proper tool.

10. Claims: -
I claim that
i) The metal or non-metal thread protector is a retrofitting to protect the threads during shot blasting process. The threads of the shell or tube are not exposed to the shot blasting or bur removing process from inside surface.
ii) Dimensions as defined in the drawing are variable in nature suitable for different thread and hole sizes.
iii) The metal or non-metal or composite material can be used for thread protector.
iv) The property of the material useful for regaining the original size and shape by means of elastic property of the material or by using the external spring loaded mechanism.
v) The shape of the ribs and its positions for fitting and removal of the protector.
vi) The dimensions of collar, ribs, thread protector, diameter of the holes in the rib with variable dimensions.
vii) The locking arrangement of the external threads of thread protector with internal threads of shell or by any geometrical shapes for locking.
