Three Digit Low Cost Electronic Door Lock

Abstract: We have been using various typesr of locking devices to secure-our houses, offices and shops. Previous locks were made out of cast iron and subjected to rusting. Then steel locks made their place in the market. Today, we have digital locks, but they are very costly and complicated, The designed lock consists of a set of rotary switches which make contact to different points. When all the points are completed in the circuit, current is then passed on to a solenoid lock. These rotary switches are numbered from one to seven. They in fact provide the numbered combination system for the lock. The solenoid lock denotes a latch for electrical locking and unlocking. The power-on unlocking type enables unlocking only while the solenoid is powered on. An electric current through the coil creates a magnetic field which pulls or pushes a magnetic plunger. The solenoid lock has been obtained from the market. For the designed locking system, this type of a component is provided along with rotary switches and a simple press on switch A charging point is provided on the switch to recharge the power source. The power consumption is very low and is for a fraction of time when the open button is pressed. Otherwise, the entire electric circuit is always open and draws no current from the power source which is a rechargeable small 12 Volts battery. The solenoid lock is small in size, yet the other parts of the lock put together take up the space of a normal modern lock. It has no protruding parts and hence has a modern look. To demonstrate the working of the designed locking system, it is fitted on a prototype door of laminated sheet and enclosed in an aluminum frame. A handle is provided to turn the door on metallic hinges. The lock on the door closes aufomatica Ily as if is" pushed. A press on switch is provided on the inward side of the door to open it from inside without using the combination system.

WORKED The lock is very simple in operation • The following steps describe it.
1. Set up a combination number of your choice.
2. Get the wires connected' accordingly, by keeping the rotary switch in-series;
3. Remember the combination. The door can be opened from inside without combination digits.
4-. Close the door. The plunger will enter tiie frame hole and-it will-not open-now. 5. Set up the right combination of numbers on each rotary switch. Once the right combination is input, a green light will glow.
7. Press the pnshr open bntton. The solenoid lock will-pulf back the plunger, thus opening the door.
8. Before closing the door, make sure to rotate the switches to disturb the combination- from being observed by the others;
9. The green light will close, thus saving the battery.
10. Close the door normally.
