Abstract: A method for manufacturing abrasive grade polycrystalline titanium diboride-titanium carbide (TiB2-TiC) composite material is disclosed. The method includes blending titania, diboron trioxide, and graphite flakes to obtain a homogeneous mixture; transferring the mixture into a graphite-lined furnace pot; subjecting the mixture to electric arc fusion via carbothermal reduction in an electric arc furnace, using graphite as a template, to form a solidified mass wherein the composite material forms with TiB2 and TiC, and graphite inclusions range from about 0.03 to 0.5% by weight; cooling the solidified mass slowly to control the crystal size; crushing the solidified mass to obtain abrasive grains; and fabricating the abrasive grains for abrasive applications. The TiC content ranges from 10% to 60 % by weight and the TiB2 content is about 40% to 90% by weight in the composite.
