Toner Wheel Cover for Motorcycle

Field of the Invention:

The present invention in general relates to "Toner wheel Cover for Motorcycle" and more particularly for motorcycles having anti locking braking systems.

Background of the Invention:

Anti- locking braking systems (ABS) have nearly become standard features on many vehicles. In general, the rotation or rotational frequency of at least one vehicle wheel is compared to other wheels of the vehicle or to a database of known values wherein further rotational movement of the measured wheel is modified by applying a signal to a vehicle controller wherein the operation of the braking system is controlled partially by the vehicle controller in order to prevent an undesirable situation such as wheel lock.

Other types of wheel measurement such as angular displacement with respect to a road surface are also measured. Regardless of the type of anti lock brake system or wheel monitoring system employed or used, one common aspect is that the rotation of the vehicle's wheel must be measured for providing a reading indicative of the wheel and use in the monitoring system.

Thus, a sensor or sensing device must be positioned on the rotating wheel in order to provide the necessary information to a controller of the ABS system.

For detection purpose a sensor ring or toner wheel rotates together with the rear wheel, while the teeth of the toner wheel pass the pulse counting sensor. The pulse counting sensor counts the teeth that have passed thereby, thus detecting the wheel speed of the rear wheel.

In addition to the above requirement and as part of the allure of owning a motorcycle there is a particular customer satisfaction or desire to own a motorcycle having good aesthetics like shining parts. The wheel and rim of the motorcycle are like some of these parts which adds to the overall appearance of the vehicle, however the toner wheel with the sensor is positioned in the same location, which does not have a good exterior appearance that matches the rest of the vehicle wheel.

Apart from the above mentioned problem, the tooth profile of the toner wheel which is continuously exposed to external factors like the road condition in India makes the toner wheel prone to damage quickly. Little dust accumulation on toner wheel will render the sensing ineffective.

Therefore, there is a need for protection of toner wheel in order to make the sensing system work effectively.

Summary of the Invention:

The present invention has been achieved in an effort to bring out a solution, which overcomes the above mentioned problems.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a toner wheel cover for a motorcycle equipped with ABS.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a toner wheel cover having an exterior finish which matches with the nearby elements of the motorcycle.

Further object of the present invention is to provide a toner wheel cover which protects the toner wheel from damage by external factors like road condition, dust etc.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a toner wheel cover for toner wheel which also acts as a spacer for hub assembly.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a toner wheel cover which acts as a dust seal.

Further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter. However, it should be understood that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, are given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from this detailed description.

Brief description of the Drawings:

The present invention will become more fully understood from the detailed description given herein below and the accompanying drawings which are given by way of illustration only, and thus are not limitative of the present invention, and wherein

FIG. 1 is a conventional motorcycle.

FIG. 2 shows exploded view of the toner wheel cover according to the present invention.

FIG. 3 shows assembly condition of toner wheel cover to the wheel according to the present invention.

FIG. 4 shows the perspective views of toner wheel cover according to the present invention.

Detail Description of the Invention:

The present invention now will be described more fully hereinafter with different embodiments. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather those embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art.

The subject matter of present invention relates to toner wheel cove? for a motorcycle equipped with ABS.

The present invention is illustrated with the help of a motorcycle. With reference to figure 1 a motorcycle comprises of a frame (101), front fork (102) attached to a pivot tube (201) of the vehicle frame, a front wheel (103) attached to these front forks (102), a handle bar (104) connected to the front forks (102), a fuel tank (105) attached so as to straddle an upper part of the vehicle frame, a seat (106) attached to the upper rear portion of the vehicle frame, an engine unit (107) attached to the lower front section of the vehicle frame, a swing arm (108) attached to a lower rear section of the vehicle frame, suspended by a rear shock absorber (not shown) from the vehicle frame and a rear wheel attached to a rear end of swing arm (108). The intake system of the engine comprises of a fuel air metering device such as a carburettor (109), intake duct and an air cleaner. The exhaust system of the engine comprises of exhaust pipe and a muffler.

The motorcycle is provided with a front fender (110) for covering an upper part of the front wheel (103), and a rear fender (111) for covering an upper part of the rear wheel (112). The drive from the engine (107) is transmitted from the engine to the driven wheel sprocket mounted on the rear wheel hub mounted on the rear wheel assembly.

According to the present invention and referring to figure 2, a toner wheel cover (201) is disposed over a toner wheel (202), which is further disposed on the axle (203) of the motorcycle. The said toner wheel cover (201) according to the present invention provides a means for covering a toner wheel (202) of a anti locking braking system of a motorcycle, such that the motorcycle wheel portion resembles a wheel that has no such system.

As shown in figure 3, motorcycle wheel having a rim is provided with brake disc (301) adapted to interact with a brake calliper (302). As known in the art the brake calliper (302) comprises a means for applying a frictional or stopping force to the surface of brake disc (301), which is secured to and rotates with the wheel. The said brake calliper is mounted to brake calliper mounting bracket (303).

To measure the wheel speed, a sensing element (304) (hereinafter is referred to as sensor) is clamped to front suspension through a bracket (305) as a stationary element and a rotating element is the said toner wheel (202) is mounted to the wheel such that toner wheel (202) and the wheel (306) rotate together. The sensor (304) is kept closed to the toner wheel (301). The sensor (304) will pick up the pulse as the toner wheel (202) rotates. This pulse input is given to controller of ABS for further processing and pressure modulation. Performance of the ABS is dependent on the wheel speed input. Toner wheel (202) requires a profile of teeth and is exposed to atmosphere directly. A cover (201) is provided for toner wheel (202), which is enmoulded with the spacer of circular shape and goes in to axle (203) of the wheel. The said toner wheel cover portion which gets enmoulded with the spacer (402) is hereinafter referred to as collar of the toner wheel cover (402). The said collar (402) is made in such a way that it exactly matches the outer profile of the bearing which is also disposed on to the axle (203) of the wheel thereby acting as dust seal for bearing. Since the bearing and wheel hub is rotating part, a space is deliberately maintained between the said collar (402) and bearing and also between the collar (402) and wheel hub.

The said toner wheel cover (201) is provided with anti rotation provisions. The rotation of cover is arrested at one opening edge of the cover by sensor mounting bracket (305) and the other opening edge of the cover by brake caliper mounting bracket (303).

The said toner wheel cover (201) is clamped between the front fork (102) face and right side wheel bearing by the wheel axle of front wheel (306).

The said toner wheel cover (201) can be made up of plastic or sheet material. The said toner wheel cover (201) encases partially the toner wheel (202).

The invention being thus described, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in many ways. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and all such modifications as would be obvious to one skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of the claims.
