Abstract: Additional air intake doors (Qty 4 nos - Refer Fig 2) of fighter aircraft are installed in the engine air intake ducts in order to supplement engine with additional air during runup, and at low aircraft speeds with high engine speed whenever additional air required for the engine. The two doors are spring loaded and opened when negative pressure created in the duct. Each door is mounted with a serrated pin and retained by a clip. Installation of the door is finalized by safetying the clip onto the mounting bolt. Safetying of the clip is done blindly as the area is not visible to the operator. The operator feels for the pin and the bolt and carries out the operation. The invention helps in overcoming this problem and allows the operator to safety the pin without any strain. The invention consists of a new tool named TRIAID used for installation of the safety clip on the mounting bolt of the additional air intake door of fighter aircraft. The tool comprises of an Arm on which a safety pin clevis is riveted on one end, a safety clip locking pin is attached to the arm by a retaining cord. The safety clip to be installed on the additional air intake door, is inserted onto the clevis and held in place by the safety clip locking pin. Open end of the safety clip is inserted in the mounting bolt. The TRIAID is twisted to lock the open end of the safety clip. After locking the pin is pulled out and the tool is free to be disengaged.
1. Title of the invention
Tool for installation of retaining clip on additional air intake door mounting Bolt on fighter aircraft.
2. Field of invention
This invention is related to the maintenance of fighter aircraft. During the maintenance activities of the fighter aircraft like Major Inspection, Periodic inspection and rectification of snags, removal and installation of additional air intake doors are required to be carried out.
The door is retained by a mounting bolt which is safetied using a retaining clip.
Installation of the clip on the bolt is difficult due to inaccessibility. This invention relates to a new and simplified method of installation of the clip on to the retaining bolt of the door.
3. Use of invention
This invention is used for installation of safety retaining clip on bolt of the additional air intake door of fighter aircraft.
4. Prior art
This method is unique. Previous method did not involve a tool.
The pin was installed by the operator manually by feeling the bolt pin hole location using his/her fingers, as the pin locking area was not visible to the operator during the operation, it was a difficult task.
5. Draw backs of prior art
The previous method was cumbersome, straining to the operator and dependent on the skill of the operator and it was more human oriented process.
As there are four additional air intake doors in the aircraft, with each door having two clips to lock the retaining bolt, the activity has to be repeated eight times the drawbacks are multifold.
6. Comparison between prior art and present invention
The new method is simpler, effective, less time consuming and less strain to operator and does not require expertise and skill for assembling retaining clip on additional air intake door on fighter aircraft.
7. Aim of the invention
Aim of the invention was to develop an effective and efficient method for installation of the safetying clip on additional air intake door mounting bolt.
8. Summary of the present invention
Additional air intake doors (Qty 4 nos - Refer Fig 2) of fighter aircraft are installed in the engine air intake ducts in order to supplement engine with additional air during run up and at low speeds with high engine speed.
The two doors are spring loaded and open based on the negative pressure in the duct. Each door is mounted with a serrated pin and retained by a clip.
Installation of the door is finalized by safe tying the clip onto the mounting bolt. Earlier assembly of the clip is done blindly as the area is not visible to the operator.
The operator feels for the pin and the bolt and carries out the operation.
The invention (Tool) helps in overcoming this problem and allows the operator to assemble the retaining clip without any strain with less time.

10. Statement of invention
This invention (Tool) is very useful for installation of the safetying retaining clip on additional air intake door mounting bolt of fighter aircraft.
11. Detailed description of invention
Refer Fig 1, 2 , 3 and 4
The invention consists of a new tool named TRIAID used for installation of the safety clip on the mounting bolt of the additional air intake door of fighter aircraft.
The tool comprises of an Arm on which a safety pin clevis is riveted on one end (Refer Fig 1).
A safety clip locking pin is attached to the arm by a retaining cord.
The safety clip to be installed on the additional air intake door, is inserted onto the clevis and held in place by the safety clip locking pin. (Refer Fig 4).
Open end of the safety clip is inserted in the mounting bolt.
The TRIAID is twisted to lock the open end of the safety clip. After locking the pin, tool is pulled out and the tool is free to be disengaged.
