Abstract: Touch panel and joystick based trainer is touchscreen display system developed to provide basic training to pilots and ground maintenance personnel. It is a cost effective flight trainer system, which include cockpit simulation station and instructor station for HAL Dornier-228 aircraft. Cockpit simulation station provides simulation of Main Instrument Panel, Overhead Panel and Center pedestal of Do-228 Aircraft. It is a simplified trainer, which can be customized easily for various versions of conventional cockpits of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft using interchangeable instrument panel. The system software can easily be modified based on the requirement of upgraded HAL Dornier-228 aircraft cockpit.

Specification

There is always requirement of providing basic training to flight crew and
maintenance personnel of HAL Do-228 aircraft, specially for newly installed
instruments and systems. Modern motion simulator is expensive, large in size, and
require high power to operate. It is not feasible to use motion simulator to provide
basic training to flight crew and maintenance personnel. Even, it is not easy to use
actual aircraft for basic training purpose due to space constraints and possibility to
generate all abnormal conditions to simulate caution & warning and failure
indication. Modern simulators are also specific to the single version of conventional
cockpit of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft. Any upgrade to simulator systems increase
cost and effort.
Touch panel and joystick based trainer is a trainer to provide basic training
to flight crew and maintenance personnel of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft. It is very cost
effective and innovative solution for providing training of different and upgraded
version of conventional cockpit of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft. This will also improve
the training efficiency without adding any kind of additional efforts and resources.
Touch panel and joystick based trainer is able to create one kind of feel of real
cockpit environment to the personnel. All PCs operated in a networked environment
using Ethernet connections to one or more remote computers. This solution uses
minimal resources and efforts.
4.2 OBJECTIVE OF INVENTION:
The objective of this invention is to provide basic training to flight crew and
maintenance personnel on different and upgraded versions of conventional cockpits
of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft on single platform.
4.3 SUMMARY OF INVENTION
Touch panel and joystick based trainer is invented which is used to provide basic
trainings to flight crew and maintenance personnel of HAL Dornier-228 aircraft. It
has multiple visual displays, which is capable to simulate the different version of
Dornier-228 instrument panels. The simulated instrument panel having indicators,
warning panels, buttons, Switches, and knobs of approximately the same type in
approximately the same location as the particular HAL Dornier-228 aircraft.

4.4 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
Touch panel and joystick based trainer consists of Cockpit Simulation System and
Instructor Station..Figure-1 shows Cockpit simulation system, which includes main '±,
— instrument panel (1), overhead panel (2), center pedestal (3) and joysticks (4 & 5). - *•
Main instrument panel has three components as shown in figure-2 pilot side panel • j
(1A), Engine and warning indicator panel (1B) and co-pilot side panel (1C). All three ;
panels is connected to single PC-1 as shown in figure-3. '

simulation of Electronic Attitude direction indicator (1.A.3), Electronic Heading
situation indicator (1.A.11), Turn and slip indicator (1.A.13), Airspeed indicator

Engine and warning indicator panel (1B) shown in figure-5 displays computer
simulation of Engine parameter which includes Oil temperature & pressure indicator
(1.B.1 & 1.B.20), Tachometer (RPM) (1.B.2 & 1.B.19), Torque (1.B.7 &1.B.11), ,
Fuel flow indicator (1.B.4 1.B.17), Fuel quantity indicator (1.B.13 &1.B.14) and
Interstage turbine temperature indicator (1.B.5 & 1.B.15), and Warning Information
like warning panel (1.B.12), Fire warning(1.B.9 & 1.B.10), and switches (1.B.6 & 8)
of Doriner-228.
Co-pilots side panel (1C) shown in figure-6 of Main instrument panel displays
computer simulation of Electronic Attitude indicator (1.C.6), Electronic Heading
situation indicator(1 .C.9), Outside temperature indicator(1 .C.3), Airspeed
indicator(1.C5), Encoding altimeter(1.C.7), Navigation controller (1.C.2 &1.C.12),
Vertical speed indicator(1.C8), Clock (1.C.4) and other warning information of
Doriner-228 Co-pilot side instruments.
Center pedestal (3) has two-touchscreen display, which is connected by PC-2
(Figure-3). It includes central pedestal part 1 as shown in. Figure 7 and central
pedestal part 2 as shown in Figure 8 for computer simulation of power lever, speed
lever and other controller of navigation/communication and other system of HAL
Doriner-228.
Overhead panel (2) includes^ computer Simulation of 5VE CB Panel (Figure-9), Fuel
& Engine control CB Panel (Figure-10) and 6VE CB Panel (Figure-11) i.e power

supply control panel.
Pitch, Roll, heading, altitude, and speed is controlled by Pilot Joystick and Co-pilot
joystick, which is connected to PC1. .^
The instructor station is used to interact and control the simulation by instructor. It
stores trainee's information i.e name, customer, aircraft type, base etc. This
information is added to the database automatically. The failure screen of instructor
station allows the instructor to introduce abnormal events during training session.
The instructor may select any of the indicated buttons to invoke the particular failure
into the simulation.
Touch panel and joystick based trainer software has four main application
programs shown in flow chart of Figure-12 which is designed to simulate the cockpit
function of aircraft. "Main instrument panel program" (12A) which displays Pilot
instruments, Co-pilot instruments, engine indicator and warning,panel of aircraft
developed in OpenGL for graphic design and rendering. "Overhead Panel Program
"(12B) and "Center Pedestal Program" (12C) is developed in Microsoft Visual
Studio C# with socket programming which communicates with Main Instrument
Panel Software(12A) and OpenGL for graphic design and rendering. Trainer
software which is object oriented design used Open source library of OpenGL for
graphic design and rendering, and Open source C++ programming is used for
complete data communication between computers PC1, PC2, PC3 and instructor
station PC4..> "Instructor Software"(12G) is developed in Microsoft Visual Studio C#
with MS Access database and socket programming.

5. CLAIMS

We claim that,
1. Touch Panel and Joystick Based Trainer for Conventional Cockpit of HAL
Dornier-228 Aircraft comprising three standard PC loaded with Cockpit
Simulation Software for providing simulation of instrument panel with respect to
the input from joystick, seven-touch screen display panel and instructor station
loaded with Instructor software.
2. Cockpit Simulation Software as per Claim 1, consists of Main Instrument Panel
Software, Overhead Panel Software and Centre Pedestal Software.
3. As per claim 2, Main instrument panel software simulates an airspeed indicator,
an attitude indicator, an altimeter, a turn coordinator, an electronic heading
indicator, a vertical speed indicator, an oil pressure indicator, an oil temperature
indicator, an ammeter indicator, a suction or vacuum indicator, a magnetic
compass, and warning panels.
4. As per claim 2, Overhead panel software simulates 5VE CB Panel, Fuel/ Engine
Control panel and Power Supply.
5. As per claim 2, Center Pedestal software simulates Power Lever, Speed Lever,
Flaps, Hydraulics and Controller of Communication System.
6. Touch Panel and Joystick Based Trainer for Conventional Cockpit of Do-228
Aircraft of .claim 1, Instructor Software to store information of trainee, selection
of version of conventional cockpit for simulation and generates failures on
Cockpit Simulation Software.
